Egg

PLEASE TAKE THIS TO REMEMBER ME.

Forgotten Man to Kris, Chapter 3

The Egg (JP: タマゴ) is a reoccurring secret Key Item in Deltarune. One can be obtained per Chapter in an "in between" area that has the Forgotten Man, who often hides behind a Forest tree.

If acquired, it can be "used" at any time, but with no effect. The Egg remains in Kris's inventory when returning from the Dark World. Some of them can be placed somewhere in Hometown depending on the Chapter. The Egg disappears from Kris's inventory regardless of its use at the end of the Chapter.

Acquisition

Chapter 1

In the Forest, Kris must backtrack between the Starwalker walkway and the Dark Ponman rotation puzzle rooms. When going left while backtracking, the Scarlet Forest track resets. While going back and forth between the two rooms, there is a 2% chance (1/50) of entering the hidden room.[1]

Upon entering the hidden area, man plays and only Kris is present, regardless of who is in their party at the time.

Kris can go behind the tree, which reveals that there is a man offering something. If the offer is accepted, Kris receives an Egg.

Chapter 2

In Cyber City's third traffic puzzle, Kris must press both 5 and 9 crosswalk buttons to stop both pink and yellow Electro-Dashers. Once pressed, they must go south, enter the east alley, then go further south to find the alley with Annoying Dog signs leading west.

After the faux Game Over, the party is transported into the dog dumpster room. The wall has a graffiti of a Forest tree, which the narration hints of the "room between". When reentering the dog dumpster room from the left, the area theme, WELCOME TO THE CITY, resets while backtracking. There is a 1/50, or 2%, chance of entering the tree room when backtracking into the dumpster room.

Upon getting warped, Kris is once again alone. Going left and inspecting behind the tree prompts the man to offer an Egg, which Kris can accept. The area cannot be re-entered.

In Weird Route, this Egg cannot be obtained, as the Annoying Dog is absent.

Chapter 3

In Chapter 3's TV World, finding the Egg is a multi-step process, and can be completed before defeating Tenna. The shortcut doors can also be used to backtrack. In-game order, the player must:

Solve the Lancer digging puzzle with the LancerCon, then switch to HERO_AXE to pick up and throw the block across the river and between the trees.

If the Zapper is LOST, the spotlight is absent,[2] rendering the Egg inaccessible.
(map link)If the block from the ReviveMint puzzle was thrown correctly, HERO_SWORD can push it onto the button to solve the puzzle. A bridge appears, and the northern button can be pressed, which causes a hallway to appear on the right.

In the right room is a large screen with a Bibliox playing. On the large screen, talk to Bibliox continuously as HERO_SWORD, then re-enter the game room once by walking to the right and then back to interact with the wardrobe. After talking to the Bibliox again, the TripTicket appears in the Key Items inventory. The ticket's description is "a map pointing to the left of a red X".

Alternatively, if the player has acquired the Shadow Mantle via the Sword Route prior to this, the puzzle screen is off. Interacting with the Bibliox in the overworld prompts him to comment, "...the ticket... it's under the ball machine..." After speaking to the Bibliox, the TripTicket appears in the B-rank room, but it is only accessible after the Ball Machine is removed, which requires visiting the secret gacharoom_unknown by spending exactly 1225 POINTs at once.

Encounter a Ribbick. In Kris's ACT menu, move the cursor to "CroakOnX", then hold the left directional input. If done correctly, the SOUL visibly sprouts legs and walks off the left side of the screen.

There are two Ribbick encounters in TV World: One is in a trash can in the room behind the first Stealth Zone, which is just east of the "Goulden Sam" shortcut door; the other is in a trash can in the invisible maze, which is further east of the first location. If both Ribbick encounters have been ended violently, the Egg is unobtainable.
Egg item Chapter 3.png
Kris obtaining an Egg in the Mancountry
Kris gets transported to Mancountry by themselves, and must go north to the monochrome tree. While conversing with the Forgotten Man, the player must repeat that they will not forget him, and that they wish to meet again to receive the Egg.

The man will explain his schedule to Kris if they wish to meet him again:

  • On Thursday, he goes to sell the donuts.
  • On Friday, he tosses the leftovers in the dumpster.
  • On Saturday, he lets it cool on the windowsill.
  • On Sunday, he harvests the wheat.
  • Hold your breath, head to the left, and count backwards to 100.

This schedule is largely a hint to the locations of each Egg in the other Chapters: "the donuts" are likely in reference to the Bake Sale positioned before and after the Chapter 1 Egg, "the dumpster" references the Egg found in Chapter 2, and "the windowsill" is alluding to the window room in the 2nd Sanctuary. After this, he asks if Kris wrote all of this down, then gives them the Egg so that they may remember him. Kris resumes their Dark World appearance upon acquiring the Egg.

Leaving Mancountry sends Kris back to the Green Room and consumes the TripTicket, making it impossible to return after leaving.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4's Egg is found around the middle of the 2nd Sanctuary, in a long hallway with many identical windows and the sacred moss at the end. This hallway is found by going right after Susie hurries over to see the next parts of the prophecy, preceding the room where the floor is made out of bells.

If missed, the hallway can also be accessed near the end of the 3rd Sanctuary. To get there, the player must go to the room where round, shadowy entities spawn every few seconds near the party as hazards. Near the right side of the room a hidden crystal path can be revealed by walking off the right edge of the path. This will lead to a corridor with the silhouettes of pillars in the foreground. At the far left of this corridor is an Organikk philosopher, who asks Kris if they missed something on "the other side of your mind". If the player answers "No", they open a door into the hallway with the windows.

Near the right side of the hallway, after passing the four Organikks, one window – the 100th window in the room, counting from the left – possesses an egg-like shape near the top, as opposed to the usual upside-down teardrop shape; walking into this window brings the player to a secret room. In this room, an Organikk alludes to the presence of another tree room, by again talking about "something in between".

Like the Egg rooms in Chapters 1 and 2, this tree room is accessed by exiting and re-entering repeatedly, this time between the secret room and the long hallway. Unlike those, the player is brought to this tree room after re-entering exactly 8 times, as opposed to relying on a 1/50 chance, and the music does not reset, as The Second Sanctuary does not play in either room.

Rather than a room with a visible tree, the player is greeted by an area similar to the one in Chapter 3. This area cannot be re-entered (even if Kris did not obtain the Egg). The area resembles a hospital, with a Rudinn receptionist (in Mancountry form) and a set of three doors. The two outer doors are locked, but the middle one, which features a small drawing of a tree, leads to an out-of-bounds area.

This area contains five invisible interactable spots, which can be detected as obstacles when walking around the space: on the left is the Forgotten Man behind his usual tree, to the right is an NPC standing below a tree painting who asks if Kris is "here for Art Club", and at the top is a sink. Talking with the Forgotten Man triggers the appearance of a blank canvas at the bottom just to the left of the door.

Interacting with the blank canvas prompts the player to draw something. If the player chooses "No", the canvas and everyone else will disappear. Otherwise, Kris will attempt to create a pencil sketch of "what they saw behind the tree", repeatedly starting over due to errors, resulting in the entire canvas being covered. Having finished their sketch, they paint a tree over it before picking up the Egg from a nearby easel. The Forgotten Man, the other person, and the second canvas are gone, and Kris can leave the area. Optionally, the player can interact with the sink again to get additional dialogue describing Kris washing their hands.[3]

Usage

In all Chapters, obtaining the Egg prevents that Chapter's "CHAPTER END" trophy from being unlocked; these trophies all list "COMPLETE WITHOUT ISSUE" as their requirement, implying that obtaining the Egg counts as an "issue" in some way.

Chapter 1

If Kris interacts with Asgore's refrigerator while in possession of the Egg, the Egg is automatically placed in the refrigerator. Checking the fridge again reveals there are "two Eggs inside the fridge".[4] If the Egg is dropped, one egg appears in Asgore's refrigerator instead.[5] This egg also appears if the refrigerator is inspected a second time without having the Egg.[4]

Chapter 2

The Egg can be placed in the basket of eggs in Sans's store. If Kris interacts with the basket of eggs while in possession of the Egg, the Egg is automatically placed in the basket, disappearing from the inventory. Susie jokes about Kris "reverse-stealing" the Egg. Checking the "eggpile" shows that there are "more eggs than usual".

After speaking with Temmie in the classroom at the end of Chapter 2, if the Egg is still in the inventory, Temmie places an egg on the table. Interacting with this egg displays the number of Eggs found so far, regardless of what has been done with them.

Chapter 3

Since Kris cannot explore Hometown during this Chapter, there is nowhere to place the Egg found in this Chapter.

Chapter 4

During the first and second Hometown sections of Chapter 4, any Eggs collected during previous Chapters can be found on Berdly's desk at school, joined by an extra "leader egg", presumably belonging to Temmie. The current maximum of Eggs that can be found on Berdly's desk is 4, not counting the Chapter 4 Egg. The inside of the school is not accessible during the night, which is the only opportunity to explore Hometown after obtaining this Chapter's Egg.

When talking to the Organikk in the mirrored donation fountain room in the 2nd Sanctuary, the number of Eggs collected up to that point will be added onto the total donated to it earlier in the Dark Sanctuary.

Trivia

  • Unlike other items in the party's inventory, Eggs do not disappear or change into something else after Kris leaves the Dark World.
  • Eggs can be dropped, which results in the unique text: "What Egg?". However, Eggs reappear in Kris's inventory if they re-enter the Dark World. The text is likely a reference to the recurring phrase "What pumpkin?", a running gag throughout the MS Paint Adventures webcomic series, which Toby Fox contributed to as a composer.
  • Pipis are occasionally referred to as eggs.[6][7] At the Fangamer FAQ during the Spamton Sweepstakes event, when asked if Pipis are eggs, Spamton says that only he can refer to them as such, but that "A WHITE ONE, THAT'S SURELY [another man's treasure]."[8]
  • Eggs may be a reference to Easter eggs, which are hidden objects or references within a game.
  • During the Spamton Sweepstakes event, one of Noelle's blog posts talks about a "SPECIAL" egg pet she received in Cat Petterz 2. The egg would make a weird noise when clicked on and, unlike the Egg item in-game, was impossible to delete. After Noelle treated it like a normal pet, it eventually left on its own "due to happiness". Additionally, the egg also had an actual name, but Noelle could not remember it.[9]
  • Leftover in the code of Chapter 4 is an object titled obj_tower_dog_egg, which, when interacted with, picks up the Egg. This implies the Egg was originally intended to be found at the end of the climbing competition instead of the DogDollar.
