Forest
The Forest (JP: 森) is the second area within Card Kingdom in Chapter 1 of Deltarune. It is located right after Field, specifically after the Great Board.
In the unused classroom, it is represented by a bunch of scattered red bricks, leading to Card Castle.
Right after exiting the Great Board, Kris and Ralsei venture into the Forest. They later find Susie and Lancer, who introduce their new team. Their team name is "DARK" followed by the team name Kris chose at the Great Board.[2] However, they have not made any progress on their evil plans, and so they run away.
Kris and Ralsei repeatedly come across Susie and Lancer as they explore the Forest. They can learn more of the duo's growing friendship.
Near the end of the Forest, Susie and Lancer fight the party. After the fight, Susie joins the party. Lancer is not technically in the party, but follows them from a distance.
After Susie and Lancer's conversation, they see Card Castle from a distance, and Lancer flees. As the party pursues Lancer, a large number of Rudinn Rangers attack. When Lancer arrives at the gate, he closes it. The Rudinn Rangers ambush Kris, Susie, and Ralsei, knocking them out and capturing them.
The Forest is a woodland area that is primarily marked with thin, red pathways. Dense, blocky, red-leafed trees border the pathways, and similarly red bushes are often situated just off the path. From the bushes, enemies can sometimes pop out. Puzzles in the Forest are primarily themed around matching card suit icons.

The Entrance[3] room is just right of the Great Board and includes a shortcut door which is the second in Card Kingdom. Jigsaw Joe and Mr. Elegance are standing in front of the shortcut door, and explain that they fixed it along with Mr. Society (who is not present). If the party did not interact with Jigsaw Joe before reaching this location, he does not appear here, and Mr. Elegance mentions that he is unsure if the door will work because only he and Mr. Society repaired it.
In the first area after the Entrance, there is a short path with three bushes. In the middle bush, a single Rabbick jumps out and starts an encounter.
In the next room is a Rudinn NPC that mentions it needs a gift for its friend Clover, and mentions her interests. There is also another Rabbick in the farthest bush to the left, which starts an encounter with two Rabbicks. The party also finds Susie and Lancer standing near a stump. If Kris talks to Susie, they can choose whether to try the salsa, make Ralsei try it or decline. If Kris eats it, they recover "something".[4] If Kris declines, Ralsei will try it instead.
The four Dark Ponmen room branches and connects to two different areas. Taking the upper northwest path leads to a room with Royal Coat Rack, the little ball, and a chest containing Ragger. Royal Coat Rack has different reactions based on if Kris spoke to him first, or if the chest was opened first.
Otherwise, going right progresses further into the Forest.
The next room has the first card suit puzzle. Susie and Lancer are also here and scheming in front of a blueprint. Kris can interact with Susie and Lancer. Lancer briefly gives Ralsei another nickname. Interacting with Susie causes her to be secretive of their plans. A second interaction causes Susie to try and encourage Kris to be a part of her team. After Kris completes the puzzle, Susie and Lancer thank them for solving it and flee with their blueprint.

The next room contains a second three-slot card suit puzzle. A Bloxer patrols the main path, which splits into two dead-ends. The puzzle is optional, and the solution is written on separate tiles of each split path at the bottom of the room.
When the spikes are gone, the north path leads to a separate room that contains two Blocklers and a chest containing a Dice Brace. Kris can inspect this chest a second time after opening it to find it has stray vowels.[5]

Clover's area is a path surrounding a card suit puzzle, with the exit being blocked by spikes. The original solution to the puzzle is near the entrance, but has been vandalized by Rouxls Kaard to stop the Lightners.[6] However, the colors are still visible.
The paths are slightly split, and there are holes in three of the four corners of the area. Clover pokes one of her heads out of the holes when the party is close to them. Interacting with each head prompts them to provide a hint. Upon solving the puzzle, the spikes lower, but Clover begins an encounter against the party.

The bake sale is an area consisting of a shortcut door and three food stands. From left to right: one is run by Rudinn, and the second belonging to Hathy. The third is Susie and Lancer, who temporarily sell a LancerCookie. Their line alludes to a sign in Undertale's Spider Bake Sale. Their wares are:
| Item | Price | Vendor |
|---|---|---|
| Choco Diamond | 40 D$ | Rudinn |
| Hearts Donut | 40 D$ | Hathy |
| LancerCookie | 40 D$ | Susie & Lancer |
Malius can be found in the north path, between the shortcut door and Rudinn's booth. Malius offers to repair broken items, such as BrokenCake, or heal the party by fixing them.
After the bake sale area is a room with two Bloxers traversing an invisible, black path. The worm is northwest of this area. If interacted with, the worm comments how they have been eating leaves before King seized the Kingdom. Northeast is a second invisible path that leads to a chest containing 40 D$.

The following area consists of various square paths populated by Scissor Dancers. When Kris nears them, the SOUL and drifting stars in this area become visible. At the southwest area, a ReviveMint can be found. South of that platform, Kris can tread over a hidden black path. Seam alludes to this path if Jevil was mentioned to them.[7] It leads to a patrolling Rabbick, and the Broken Key B.

In a room that consists of a single bush, Kris and Ralsei come across Lancer, who is disguised with a fake mustache. He explains to them that he wants to design an "Evil Plan" to impress Susie. Ralsei and Kris begrudgingly agree in the hopes that it convinces Lancer to join their party. The party is then prompted to design a "Machine to Thrash Your own Ass". After designing, it turns out that Susie and Lancer planned to steal their design, so they run away with the blueprints of the machine. This design transfers into later Chapters via Completion FILE.
If the party returns with Susie and inspect the bush, Susie questions if Kris and Ralsei messed with her "hideout" where she took a brief nap.[8]

This room is a long pathway inhabited by a Starwalker Bird. It shoots star-shaped bullets at Kris until they leave or interact with the bell on the opposite side. Ringing the bell causes the Starwalker Bird to lose its wings and retreat. After the bell is rung and the Starwalker Bird loses its wings if it is chased after and interacted with, the player will get 40 D$ from "Starwalker's ambient luster". "The original" Starwalker then appears if Kris backtracks. If Kris returns to this area from the west, Scarlet Forest restarts.

When the party enters the Starwalker Bird's room from the dark tree area, there is a small chance (1/50 or 2%)[9] of entering the hidden area.
The area consists of a single tree. Unlike other rooms, Kris can walk off of the path in the black area. This room also has its own track, a very simple piano loop.
Only Kris is visible within the hidden area; Susie and Ralsei do not follow them, though they are still technically present as party members. Dropping Ralsei's manual will trigger his dialogue as usual.
When examining the tree, it states that there is a man behind it; the man offers the Egg to the party. Once taken or declined, the man ceases to exist there, and subsequent examinations reveal nothing but the tree. Exiting the area brings the party to the bake sale. The area cannot be re-entered.
There is large round room with a diamond chain rotating around the middle. Initially, there is a tree blocking the right exit. Interacting with an invisible tree removes the blockage. Kris can press the button while the tree with legs is hidden, which causes Ralsei to be surprised.

Before the forest maze, Lancer and Susie can be found here being fanned by two Rudinns.
The maze has a labyrinthine structure and has a number of rooms, which include both overworld bullets and enemies.
After the party has successfully navigated through the maze, it is no longer accessible. The maze entrance and exit become directly connected.
The Thrashing Room[10] appears at the very end of the Forest, between the maze exit and the entrance to Card Castle. The shortcut door for Card Castle is located here.
When the party reaches the Thrashing Room, Kris and Ralsei are confronted by the Thrash Machine they designed earlier. However, it is revealed that Lancer and Susie built the machine out of junk. The Duck parts are an exception, as are exactly as illustrated when designing the Thrash Machine. They blow it up because it "sucks", then engage the party in battle themselves.

If the battle is lost, a different sequence to the standard Game Over occurs. The screen goes black and Lancer and Susie laugh, after which Kris and Ralsei are back at the room after the maze with 10 HP. The game can be saved here. If the game was saved beforehand, the dialogue in the Thrashing Room becomes different. Losing the battle again yields different dialogue.
After entering Card Castle, a shortcut door is available in this area, and is listed as the "Castle" shortcut door.
Before visiting Card Castle, there are several additional areas between the Thrashing Room and Card Castle. Once the party has visited Card Castle, these areas are skipped.

The first four rooms simply contain a path going east. While the path contains a few kinks, it is overall mostly straight. The first room and third room only contain a small number of regular trees; the second room contains a Dark Candy tree, where Susie and Lancer work together to retrieve a high-up Dark Candy from the tree. The fourth room contains a large number of regular trees, with Card Castle being visible in the distance. While here, Lancer follows parallel to the party, walking across the inaccessible black area outside of the path.
The next two rooms have a purple grass floor instead, matching the Field rather than the Forest. These rooms are surrounded by Rudinn Rangers, and Kris has to dodge the diamonds that the Rudinn Rangers launch at them. The first room heads east, while the second room heads north, leading to the Castle entrance.
The Card Castle entrance is a small blue path leading north to Card Castle, lead to by a narrower purple grass path.
In the UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary stream, Toby Fox has various comments regarding the Forest:
Toby admits that he loves bake sales, and that the bake sale area is the second Charlie Brown from Peanuts reference.[11]
During the Thrash Machine creation segment, Toby states he had fun putting leaves in Susie's hair.[12]
The reclining chair Susie and Lancer lay on before the maze is the same sprite used in the Undertale Kickstarter reward tiers video.[13] The Maze section is also inspired by Super Mario RPG's Forest Maze.[14]
After defeating Susie and Lancer, Toby originally planned to have Lancer join the party by being in the status menu. However, this idea was scrapped due to it being "too hard" to implement at the time.[15]
- Rabbick encounters can be avoided by moving a close distance so that they pop out without encountering the party right away. Note that the Rabbick in the first bush will chase after Kris after its encounter is avoided.
- The Forest's full name is likely meant to be "Block Forest", as Toby Fox calls it by that name in the 6th Anniversary stream,[1] and there exists an unused quiz question in Chapter 3's files that also has that name as the correct answer.[16]
- Exclusively during the stream version, Nubert appears near the bake sale's shortcut door. Toby states that Nubert is the "best character", and is "everyone's favorite".[17]
