Sans to Kris, Chapter 1

Sans (JP: サンズ) (/sænz/)[2] is a returning character in Deltarune. He runs an eponymous grocery store in Hometown, where he is the self-proclaimed "janitor".

Profile

Appearance

Sans is a short skeleton with a wide smile and large eye sockets. He wears a blue unzipped hoodie, a white shirt underneath, slippers, and striped black shorts. Sans also possesses white glowing pupils in his eyes, depending on the sprite.

Despite most official appearances of Sans depicting him wearing pink slippers, such as his Mii costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sans is never seen wearing pink slippers in either Undertale or Deltarune.

Personality

Sans appears to be laid-back, with his lowercase dialogue reflecting his personality. Sans enjoys messing around with others for his amusement, as shown by his frequent banter with Susie. He is generally amiable towards Kris and eager to interact with the citizens of Hometown after moving in recently.[3] He deeply cares for the well-being of his younger brother.[4] Sans enjoys making jokes and puns, as evidenced by his conversation with Toriel in his store after she forgot the eggs she bought.

Sans is capable of sensing tension amongst others. When, in Chapter 2, Asgore interrupts his and Toriel's dialogue by cracking a pun at his own expense, he quickly turns his back on the two and doesn't turn around until Toriel leaves, likely wanting no part in their divorce-driven predicament. His subsequent interaction with Asgore is similarly awkward; when the latter asks what flower would remind Toriel of the time they first met, Sans's only response is that he probably should "talk to [his] plants about that." Despite this, he seems to be dismissive of Susie's visible discomfort when she and Kris return to the Dreemurr residence at the end of Chapter 4.[5] He also seems to be aware of Kris' distress during the Weird Route of Chapter 5, offering them some words of encouragement[6].

Sans usually does not express surprise or confusion. When Kris greets him as an old friend or asks for news about his brother despite never having heard of him before, his only reaction is to wink at Kris.

Main story

Chapter 1

Sans introducing himself if Kris was polite

After returning from the Card Kingdom, Kris can find Sans in front of his store. Interacting with Sans causes him to greet Kris. Kris can then greet him back, or question who he is. Sans's reply varies depending on the chosen option, then he introduces himself.

Kris can then inquire Sans about the store, or friends. If Kris asks about the store, Sans explains that the store is closed, and that someone should complain to the owner. If Kris asks about "Friends", Sans admits that he recently moved to the town,[3] and asks Kris if there are people he should know better.

  • Selecting "Me" prompts Sans to give them his phone number. Kris can then use their Cell Phone to call him at any time during Chapter 1. However, when called, it directs to a hotline for idiot babies. The option then changes to "Not Sans's Number" and rings indefinitely if called. If Kris once again offers to be Sans's friend after having called the hotline, he says that he refuses to associate with "idiot babies". This number does not transfer to Chapter 2.
  • Selecting "My Teacher" prompts Sans to describe one of Alphys's visits to his store, where she wore sunglasses and filled her suitcase with instant noodles, then purchased them. He admits that their relationship is purely business at this time.
  • Selecting "My Mom" prompts Sans to claim to have "befriended" Toriel the night prior. He explains that Toriel bought chocolates, and that she informed him how she has to keep them in her room so Kris cannot eat them. Bemused, he comments on Kris sounding like a "fun kid".
  • Selecting "Nobody" prompts Sans to say, "harsh, but fair."

As Kris starts to leave, Sans states that he needs help with something. Kris can answer "Yes" or "No", with Sans's dialogue slightly differing depending on how long Kris took to answer. Regardless of the answer, Sans explains he would like them to spend time with his younger brother tomorrow. If Kris spoke to Sans about his brother, or did not speak to him at all, he remembers this in subsequent Chapters.

Chapter 2

After returning from the Cyber World, Kris can enter Sans's grocery store and speak with him. Walking to the left side of the store prompts a cutscene where Toriel and Sans exchange egg puns as she buys eggs before being abruptly interrupted by Asgore.

Kris can talk to Sans about his brother, to which the latter says that things didn't work out and Kris cannot meet his brother today. If Kris did not speak to Sans in Chapter 1, he expresses surprise that they know about his brother and jokingly denies having one. He can also interact with Susie, who finds his sense of humor exasperating.

Chapter 4

Post church service, Sans stands outside his store in Chapter 4. If he is talked to, Susie notices that the sign on his store says "OPEN" even though it is technically closed due to him blocking the entrance. If Kris exits and returns to this area after this interaction, the sign becomes "CLOPEN", which is a set theory term describing a set that is both open and closed (no external neighbors). This interaction can occur a third time, changing the sign to "Sans overworld sign.gif".

Sans also seemingly teleports in front of Catty's house, where he uses their grill to fry up cattails instead of hotdogs as a setup for one of his pun-related jokes. Susie also notices the hot dog is made of "cattail", alluding to Undertale's Hot Dog...? item.

At the end of the Chapter, he is seen dancing with an inebriated Toriel at the Dreemurr residence, indicating friendly relations between the two, which was first alluded to when Sans mentioned that he "befriended" Toriel in Chapter 1. Inspecting the fridge reveals a bottle of Sans's ketchup inside.[7]

Chapter 5

Festival screenshot Chapter 5.png

Sans appears in Chapter 5, participating in the festival with the role of the "ice cream sans", as well as acting as the operator of the Ferris Wheel and the Teacup Ride. His and his brother's house is decorated like the other buildings.

Sans mainly sells ice cream at his "Ice Cream's" shop, seemingly teleporting back and forth between different stations due to the fast speed at which he moves to each one; an ability he had in Undertale. He sells three cones for Kris, Susie, and Noelle before the festival ends. After the party buys them, he says they qualify for a punch card, giving one to Susie and telling her to "draw your friends on here" to remember them[8]. On it, she draws a picture, presumably of Kris and Noelle, and additionally Ralsei if Kris previously agreed to buy ice cream for Susie on Ralsei's behalf during Chapter 3. Sans keeps the card and says it is not actually worth anything, to Susie's disappointment. Notably, this is required for the story to progress, as Susie and Noelle will refuse to go to the lake before getting an ice cream.[9]

This card with a drawing of Susie may be the same one found in Sans' workshop in Undertale, which is described as a "poorly drawn picture of three smiling people" with the words "don't forget" written in lowercase (referencing how Sans had Susie draw it so that he would remember them).

Weird Route

In the Chapter 5 portion of the weird route, Sans is one of only two residents that can be interacted with in Hometown, the other being Rudy. He is still running the ice cream stand (Albeit, his store sign now says 'Sans like it does in the first four chapters.) Interacting with Sans here is also required for the route to continue. He still hands Susie a punch card and tells her to "draw you and your friends on it,"[10] in contrast to his dialogue outside of the Weird Route which excludes Susie herself; Susie draws herself, Kris, and Ralsei.[11] When Susie asks for ice cream, Sans will reply with saying he does not have anything, and when she gets upset, Sans offers bread to her and Kris, which Kris takes. Sans says that he had it to make ice cream sandwiches, which Susie thinks is not a bad idea. Trying to talk to Sans at the ice cream stand again will result in him saying that the ice cream will be done later, and for Kris and Susie to take it easy.

Sans does not appear at the Ferris wheel stand in the weird route, though interacting with the teacups stand will make Susie complain that he is not there, but Sans replies that he is there and just lying down out of view. When Susie questions this, he will say that he is just eating raisins face down. Interacting with him after this results in Susie asking why Sans is not in the ice cream stand, to which he says that it is hard to eat ice cream face down.

It is required to order ice cream from Sans to progress the Weird Route, as Susie will refuse to allow Kris to meet Noelle at the lake before doing so.

Outside of Deltarune

Sans first appeared as a major and supporting character in Undertale. He lives in Snowdin Town with his younger brother, Papyrus. They live in a two-story house with a balcony, which is decorated with red and green holiday lights, a wreath on the door, and a pirate flag. Sans enjoys going to a bar named Grillby's when he is not on sentry duty, where he often reads car magazines. In Hotland, he also tries to sell hot dogs.

Trivia

  • Sans's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1.
  • Sans has an unused dialogue portrait showing his face without pupils. In Undertale, this dialogue portrait is used when Sans becomes serious.
  • Much like in Undertale, Sans in Deltarune has dialogue that leans on the fourth wall: he is seemingly wise to the incongruous comments the player may make as Kris, such as recognizing them despite having never met before (and winking while saying this), or knowing about his brother even if he was not talked to in Chapter 1.
  • The track The place where it rained is a rendition of the Undertale track It's Raining Somewhere Else. This, alongside the titles, implies a connection between the Undertale and Deltarune appearances of Sans.
    • The connection is strengthened by the punch card drawn by Susie both in the normal and Weird Route, seemingly found in Sans' workshop with the words "don't forget" written in lowercase. Notably, the card only appears after learning of "Suzy" from the Clam Girl, a character who seems to anticipate Deltarune in some of her dialogues.
  • In the first Light World section of Chapter 4, Sans instantly transports himself from near Catty's grill to his store's door between screen transitions. This implies Sans may possess teleportation abilities in Deltarune, similarly to his appearance in Undertale.
    • This is further supported by Sans seemingly teleporting between his three stands at the festival during Chapter 5.
