Shadow Mantle

From Deltarune Wiki

So if you want this MANTLE, hurry up and take it...
If you can reach it!

Shadow Mantle holder, Chapter 3

The Shadow Mantle (JP: シャドウマント), formatted as ShadowMantle in the inventory, is an armor in Deltarune, obtained by completing the Sword Route. It can be equipped to any party member but Noelle. It gives defense equal to the current Chapter number, initially giving +3 DF in Chapter 3. It also gives the Dark/Star ability, which provides high elemental damage reduction against the Dark/Star damage type, making the battle with the Knight significantly easier.

In addition to defending against Dark/Star attacks by 66%, certain attacks deal less damage to the wearer despite not being elemental attacks:

  • The attacks from the Titan and Titan Spawn deal 50% less damage to the wearer.
  • The star-shaped bullets from the Hammer of Justice's Pinball Shell attack deal 85% less damage if Susie is wearing the mantle.

Additionally, the Shadow Mantle has additional properties during the battle against the Knight.

  • All attacks other than the final attack and the slashing part of the Box Splitter attack have their damage reduced by 67% instead of 66%.
  • The slashing part of the Box Splitter attack has its damage halved, dealing 33% of the target's max health rather than 66%.
  • If equipped in the first armor slot, Box Splitter and Tracking Swords attacks are redirected. The mantle's wearer is always targeted by at least two hits before targeting becomes random. Once a party member not wearing the mantle is hit, this cycle resets, guaranteeing the wearer to be hit at least 2 times out of 3 during those attacks.
  • If equipped in the second armor slot, Box Splitter and Tracking Swords attacks are redirected. The first two hits target the wearer, then all other hits target random characters for the rest of the battle.

In Chapter 2, if Seam was given two Shadow Crystals, they mention wanting to offer it to the party. However, it went missing.[1] In Chapter 3, completion of the Original Game yields the Shadow Mantle.

Similarly to other equipment granted by the Shadow Crystal bosses, the Shadow Mantle cannot be sold.

Acquisition

Obtaining the Shadow Mantle requires Kris has access to the backstage area by earning an S-rank, T-rank, or Z-rank, or simply paying to get a counterfeit S-rank from the Pippins in the red carpet hall for 1500 POINTs. After each board, Kris must enter the S-rank changing room or enter the manhole in the Z-rank changing room in order to reach the backstage area, and play the "original game" without Tenna's modifications. At the end of the 3rd game, Kris engages in a boss battle against the Shadow Mantle holder.

Flavor text

  • Hell yeah, what's this? [When equipping it to Susie]
  • Sh-should I wear this...? [When equipping it to Ralsei]
  • No... it's for someone... taller. [When attempting to equip it to Noelle; unused]

Trivia

  • Despite the Shadow Mantle holder's appearance giving the impression of a dramatic, pitch black design, Seam states that the Shadow Mantle itself simply looks like an old scrap of cloth.[1]
  • If multiple Shadow Mantles are equipped into a single character (via hacks), then the elemental damage reduction percentages do not stack and remain the same as if they were only wearing a single Mantle.
