Manual
Oh, that was fun! You're a wonderful student, Kris!
... and, er, in case you ever need a refresher, I...
Here! I wrote a Manual for you and Susie!Ralsei, Chapter 1
The Manual (JP: マニュアル) is an item obtained in Chapter 1 of Deltarune. Ralsei gives it to Kris after they complete or decline the Dummy tutorial battle. It cannot be sold to vendors.
In order to remove the Manual from the inventory, it must be tossed twice in a row while Ralsei is in the party, or once while Ralsei is absent. If tossed while Ralsei is in the party, he initially assumes Kris dropped it by mistake and returns it. If Kris tosses the Manual a second time while Ralsei is present, he seems befuddled and promises to make a better manual next time.
The two moments during the story that Ralsei is absent from the party are immediately after Lancer runs off to Card Castle and Ralsei chases after, and after defeating King but before closing the Eastern Fountain.
Although Ralsei is not physically present in the hidden area of the Forest where the man resides, he is still considered to be inside of the party, so tossing the Manual here will still upset Ralsei.
The Manual can be removed from the inventory with the Glowshard glitch if it is in the second or third slot, which is not considered as tossing.
If the Manual is kept at the end of Chapter 1, it disappears from the inventory in Chapter 2, and reappears on a nightstand in Kris's room within Ralsei's castle, This happens as well if the Manual was thrown away without Ralsei in the party. If the Manual was thrown away in Chapter 1 with Ralsei present in the party, a trash can appears on the nightstand instead.[1]
- It can be used in battle against Rudinns to make them tired, allowing Ralsei to spare them with his Pacify spell.
- It can be read to Hathy, who "[listens] politely", but with no other effect.
- It can be read to Clover, who becomes "sentimental" and adds 50% to her Mercy meter, allowing her to be spared sooner.
- (You tried to read the manual, but it was so dense it made your head spin...) [When used]
- (You drop the manual on the floor with a resounding thud.) [When dropped]
- [If Ralsei is present]
- [Ralsei] Hey, Kris. What are you doing...?
- [Ralsei] Oh no! Is that the manual?
- [Ralsei] Looks like you accidentally dropped it...
- [Ralsei] Here you go, Kris! You don't wanna lose that!
- (You got the manual.) (Again.)
- (You tossed the Manual hard.) (Its pages scatter in the wind.) [When dropped a second time]
- [If Ralsei is present]
- [Ralsei] ..............
- [Ralsei] Umm... Th-that's OK, Kris! I can always...
- [Ralsei] I'll just make a better one next time!
- [Ralsei] ... [When dropped a third time if Ralsei is present; unused as the Manual does not return the second time]
In the game files, there are unused page images of the Manual. This is similar to the Undertale Demo's Manual, which only appears in a separate folder from the game.
In the UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary stream, Toby Fox explains that he had considered making the Manual readable, but scrapped the idea. He also mentions that Temmie Chang recreated a physical version of the Manual.[2]
During Chapter 3, it is referenced on two occasions. In the Cooking Show minigame, pressing the "W" key on a keyboard launches the "Pulsar Cannons" for the minigame. Page 7 of the Manual is referenced during versus Rouxls Kaard, as the Annoying Dog appears as a battle option, which can occur when idling.
