Undyne

From Deltarune Wiki

HEY, PUNK!!! GET OUT OF THE ROAD!!!
YOU'RE BLOCKIN' TRAFFIC!!!!
... Oh, wait, it's just Asgore's kid.

Undyne shouting at Kris, Chapter 1

Undyne (JP: アンダイン) (/ˈʌnˌdaɪn/ UN-dyne)[2][3] is a returning character in Deltarune. She is the Chief of Police for Hometown, and works at the Police Station with Napstablook.

Profile

Appearance

Undyne is an anthropomorphic thin, blue-skinned, fish-like monster. She has a long red ponytail with her bangs swept up to the left, blue fins with red webbing on the sides of her head, black sharp pupils and yellow sclera, and sharp jagged yellow teeth.

Undyne wears a navy blue police uniform: a hat on top of her head, a blue long-sleeved jacket with a badge, blue slacks, and black shoes. Unlike her counterpart in Undertale, who wears a black eyepatch over her left eye, Chief Undyne has both eyes fully intact.

In the Dark World, Undyne dons a silver-gray set of armor. It features large shoulder pads, armored gauntlets, a star-shaped badge, and a metallic police hat resembling the upper-half of a star crest. Her scales become a more vivid cyan and her hair becomes a bright, neon pink color.

Personality

Undyne is hot-blooded, enthusiastic, and passionate about everything she does - including things she does badly, such as singing. Said passionate nature also leads her to overreact to minor incidents. Undyne is dissatisfied with the low level of crime in Hometown, indicating that she would prefer to have some sort of action occur during the course of her duties, and eagerly looks forward to beating up any criminals or wrongdoers. She is good at sports, and plays the piano.

Despite her tendency to overreact, Undyne is shown to take her duty as Hometown's police chief seriously. She demonstrates a strong grasp on assessing a situation when it matters, as shown when stopping the Knight from kidnapping Toriel. Even without fully understanding what is happening, Undyne does not let her confusion interfere with her job, acting decisively and with conviction.

Main story

History

Prior to the events of Deltarune, Undyne was appointed as police chief after Asgore was removed from the position.[4] She sometimes plays piano at the local hospital, though the nurse asks her to leave if she starts singing.[5]

At one point, Susie kicked Monster Kid's ball into Undyne's police car. Undyne responded by exiting the car and trouncing Monster Kid, Snowy, and Jockington at handball.[6]

Chapter 1

Undyne is first seen waving cheerfully from a sidewalk as Toriel drives Kris to school.

After Kris returns from Card Kingdom, Undyne can be found standing in the street near the hospital, where she has been standing in the street and yelling at everyone to get out of her way instead of directing traffic. This also applies to Snail Guy and Scared Donut Guy, who are beside her. If approached, she admits she has been feeling antsy lately since nothing happens in Hometown. She knows Kris as "Asgore's kid", but does not recognize Alphys's name.

If Kris offers to help, she suggests that they get someone to rob the bank "so [she] can suplex them", but since Hometown does not have a bank, she changes the request to getting someone to build a bank instead. Kris can choose to describe that the school has a Dark World, though Undyne laughs since there is no law against it, and thus considers it a matter for the school board. If Kris has nothing to comment on, Undyne also asks for any leads about a "purple girl", who is "wanted on several counts of Comic Mischief".

Chapter 2

Undyne lifting a car near the traffic jam

Near the library, Undyne can be found lifting one of the cars on the crossroads of the street. If spoken to, Undyne reveals that when she was directing traffic a dog drove into the middle of the street in a toy car and started doing donuts. This caused every car in town to become jammed up, blocking off access to the rest of Hometown beyond the library. Undyne tells Kris to leave the scene as she has some bench-pressing to do.

After Kris and Susie return from the Cyber World, Undyne can be found sitting at her desk in the Police Station. If Kris tries to speak to Undyne from the side, she yells and orders them to not do so.[7] Mentioning the Dark World causes her to laugh and break her table. This launches the cell key into the cell door, causing the captured Wet-Nose Bandits to escape. Before Undyne chases them, and she asks Kris to deliver a Box of Heart Candy to Alphys. The box has a "get well soon" card hastily addressed to Alphys's bike.[8] However, Undyne also put a note explicitly for Kris.[9]

During the Chapter's final cutscene, Toriel calls the police about her car's tires being slashed. The officer on the other end of the line, who is confirmed to be Undyne at the end of Chapter 3, agrees to pay a visit.[10]

Chapter 3

The Knight kidnaps Undyne and takes her to the shelter

At the end of Chapter 3, Undyne arrives in TV World within the Dreemurr residence, entering through the front door left ajar by Kris. She appears after Kris, Susie, and Ralsei have been defeated by the Knight as it attempts to take Toriel.

Regardless of the preceding battle's outcome, she attempts to stop the Knight by launching multiple spears at it. The Knight dodges this attack and grabs Undyne as she attempts to confront it. She is taken out of TV World through a Great Door, then brought into the shelter. Kris and Susie give chase, but the shelter door is closed before they have a chance of entering it.

Relationships

Alphys

Undyne and Alphys are relative strangers and, prior to the events of Deltarune, do not seem to know each other.[11] However, Undyne grows concerned for Alphys in Chapter 2 when she crashed her bike[12] and invited her to the church prior to Chapter 4.[13] According to Alphys, she and Undyne met in an incident where she crashed her bike, and she describes the police as "eye candy".

Outside of Deltarune

In Undertale, Undyne takes a much more prominent role as the leader of the Royal Guard, and routinely patrols Waterfall in search of humans. She enjoys playing the piano, which can be found in her house.

Undyne is also romantically fond of Alphys, as she admires the passion she has in her interests. In the True Pacifist Ending, they end up in a romantic relationship. This is referenced in multiple pieces of dialogue within Deltarune, as the player is expected to have knowledge of the relationship they had in Undertale, even though no close relationship has formed in Deltarune, as of Chapter 4.

Trivia

  • Undyne's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1.
  • In a reference to Undyne's oft-repeated battle cry in Undertale, the caution tape blocking the road to the left of Hometown's Police Station reads "NGAHHHHH!!!" She also calls Kris "you punk", using the phrase in the same manner as her counterpart did.
  • Undyne's line "Nothing to report, huh? At times like this... Punks like you should be home playing video games." is a reference to a line said by Captain Strong in MOTHER 2 / EarthBound, which goes "At times like this, kids like you should be playing Nintendo games."
  • Unused text for using the Glass item in the Light World during Chapter 3 describes Kris briefly seeing Undyne frozen in ice.[14]
