Dark Sanctuaries

From Deltarune Wiki

The Dark Sanctuaries are three Dark Worlds formed during Chapter 4 within Hometown's church. The prophecy is heavily featured within the Dark Sanctuaries, which contain fragments of the prophecy in the form of floating glass tapestries.

Main story

The sanctuaries came into being when the Knight created two Dark Fountains. A smaller one appears in the church's lobby, and the larger Dark Fountain was created in its main hall. This created the Dark Sanctuary and 3rd Sanctuary, which share the darkness from both fountains.

The Dark Sanctuary is the first Dark World Kris and Susie end up in when they enter the church. Ralsei also arrives to heal Kris after they crash into a glass tapestry. While exploring the Dark Sanctuary, the party meets an Old Man. He assumes the role of a supportive figure to the party, primarily Susie. After solving various puzzles, the party finds the Knight again. Susie tries to chase after the Knight, who absconds and locks the Great Door.

After returning to the Light World, Susie creates the 2nd Sanctuary in hopes of finding the Old Man. In it, Kris and Susie pursue the Sound of Justice, under the assumption that its silhouetted form is the Old Man.

Eventually, the Knight flees to the 3rd Sanctuary, the final Dark World of the Chapter. The party confronts the Knight, and Susie taunts them. This causes the Knight to create another Dark Fountain while inside the 3rd Sanctuary. The new Dark Fountain erupts and turns into stone, and a Titan hatches from it.

Sublocations

There are three sub-areas within the Dark Sanctuaries. Unlike Card Kingdom and the Cyber World, these three sub-areas are not different subsections of the same Dark World, but three distinct, albeit similar, Dark Worlds with their own fountains.

The Dark Sanctuary

The Dark Sanctuary is the first Dark World of the Dark Sanctuaries. It was created from the church's lobby, storage room, and Alvin's office. It is the largest of the three Sanctuaries, and has multiple sub-areas within it. Additionally, it is the only Dark World that has a functional version of the Old Man's study.

The Dark Sanctuary takes the form of a massive cathedral with sprawling ornate architecture, massive bookshelves, and numerous floating glass tapestries depicting the prophecy. Statue forms of Darkners can be found, which are regarded as ancestors by the active Darkners.

After the door to the 3rd Sanctuary is opened in the Light World, its darkness spills out into the lobby of the church and recreates the original Dark Sanctuary, only with all of the statues restored to life.

2nd Sanctuary

The 2nd Sanctuary

The 2nd Sanctuary is the second Dark World of the Dark Sanctuaries. It was created by Susie in an effort to find the Old Man to ask him for the church's lock code.

It is a distorted version of the first Dark Sanctuary, with repetitive architecture, geometry, and abstract appearance. It features an altered color palette and has pitch black rooms. Several locations from the original Dark Sanctuary are represented in the 2nd Sanctuary, but all of them have been warped in some way.

In the Second Sanctuary, Darkners from the First Sanctuary have turned to stone, and the "ancestor" Darkners have been revived.

3rd Sanctuary

The 3rd Sanctuary

The 3rd Sanctuary was made from the main room of the church. It is filled with the tapestries of the prophecy and retains both the warped architecture from the 2nd Sanctuary and the original unwarped rooms from the first Dark Sanctuary. None of the Darkners in this world are statues, meaning Darkners from the first and second Sanctuaries both appear at once.

The first Dark Sanctuary can be backtracked to within the 3rd Sanctuary, though with slight changes due to the 2nd Sanctuary's Darkners no longer being statues.

Trivia

  • The Dark Sanctuaries are the only Dark Worlds created thus far that lack a "ruler", a character who acts as both the Chapter's antagonist and final boss. The Knight instead serves as the Chapter's villain, while a Titan is the final boss.
