Queen, Chapter 2

Serial Number Q5U4EX7YY2E9N, shortened to Queen (JP: クイーン), is a Darkner who rules the Cyber World. She is the main antagonist and penultimate boss of Chapter 2 of Deltarune. At the end of Chapter 2, she uses her GIGA Queen mecha to fight the party's Thrash Machine.

Profile

Appearance

Queen is a tall and slim black, azure, and white Darkner. She wears a sleeveless black top with an azure masonic collar that has slightly spiked shoulders and a large white medici-styled collar, white pants/leggings (occasionally with either side half of the pants being shaded azure), black high-heeled calf-length boots, elbow-length azure gloves, a beauty spot at the right of her eyes, azure lipstick, and an azure cap with black marks on each side that sweeps significantly behind her head. Her eyes are a dark screen with a heart-like shape with eyelashes, occasionally showing red text (such as "LMAO", "IDK", or "NICE") according to her emotions. Her overall design bears a resemblance to Lancer and King, despite her being a computer rather than a playing card like they are.

In the Light World, Queen is a plain black laptop without any distinctive features.

Personality

Queen has an erratic and lighthearted personality, and seems to enjoy playing the role of a villain. She often mocks the party and makes empty threats, such as discussing roboticizing Noelle's face. She is unaware of Noelle's true desires and prefers making choices for others, even if she is ultimately well meaning. She seems reluctant about controlling people she likes, instead preferring they willingly go along with her plans. Queen is also prone to giving people pet names and describing them using humorous adjectives. She earnestly considers her goal of creating more Dark Fountains beneficial to the Light World; upon learning about the Roaring from Ralsei, Queen recognizes that she was misguided and immediately aborts her plan.

Queen is indicated to care for the party, including Berdly. Despite finding the latter annoying, she tries to warn him about his arm being damaged before he takes his plug out of his face. When Kris and Noelle are separated from the main group, Queen makes a truce with Kris and proposes to play the arcade game with them despite being enemies. She also tries to appeal to them by giving them rooms in her mansion with things based off their search history. Near the end of Chapter 2, Queen tells Noelle to ignore her desires to make a new Dark Fountain and allows her to decide what to do for herself.

Speech pattern

Queen capitalizes the first letters of every word in her dialogue. She also neglects the use of punctuation marks or uses them sporadically, for computer-like effects such as imitating a text template (e.g. "You Have Been: [text]"). Queen uses Internet acronyms when talking, such as LMAO, which appears on her face in one of her portraits. In the Japanese translation of Deltarune, she employs katakana instead of hiragana, all of her dialogue is surrounded by HTML comments (<!-- -->), and "LMAO" is replaced with "www" and "草" (kusa, "grass") - internet slang terms used by Japanese people to represent laughing.

Main story

History

Queen and her kingdom seem to draw power from Lightners using their devices and the internet. As related by Ramb in Chapter 3, Queen was a laptop that Kris and Noelle took home to play make-believe, with King on Kris's side, and Queen at Noelle's. Other than this mention, it is unknown how intimate Queen and King were. Seam also implies knowing her long ago. There is no indication that she knew Lancer prior to meeting him in Ralsei's Castle Town.

At some point in the past, Queen overtook Spamton as the Cyber World's most popular figure, with advertisements of his being replaced with her own.

After losing access to the internet, Queen grew increasingly erratic, controlling her Plugboy subjects using wires and employing extreme measures to achieve her goals. At some point, the Knight created the library Fountain, and Queen was able to obtain a video of the Fountain being formed.

Chapter 1

After defeating Jevil violently, he mentions that "SOON, THE "QUEEN" RETURNS", foreshadowing her appearance in Chapter 2.

Chapter 2

Queen revealing her plans to Kris and Susie

Kris and Susie meet Queen after she captures Noelle in Cyber Field. Since Queen has no additional cages, she instead monologues. She desires world domination, to have Noelle become her "willing peon", and possibly roboticize Noelle's face. Queen taunts Susie, and converts two Plugboys into Werewires before leaving.

The party later finds Queen as she tries to coax the caged Noelle into becoming her peon. Susie reveals her "roboticizing" plan in Noelle's immediate vicinity, to which Queen is disappointed her surprise was revealed. She then sends Noelle away, muses that the latter needs her friends to comply, and tries to converse with the party. Ralsei refuses.

Queen acknowledges this, and summons a Swatchling who serves an Arcade Machine. She wishes to humiliate them so that their damaged self-esteem forces them to serve her. If Kris interacts with Queen, she preemptively congratulates their loss, and wishes happy birthday to Susie. A second interaction prompts Queen to state that the Arcade Machine will become cold.

Queen laughs when Kris is unable to reach or move the controls on their own. She taunts the party again when they team up before starting the game. During the fighting game, Queen offers Control advice for attacking and dodging. Upon the party's victory, Queen is impressed and offers a compromise: they could join her "Cyber-Army", with a partial chance of their faces getting roboticized, or decline. Kris can choose between "Bosom" or "Perish" for varying dialogue, though either option ends with Queen defaulting to "Perish" before fleeing.

Queen appears on the screen after Kris solves the "AGREE2ALL" puzzle. She reveals that the input legally binds the party to be her official minions, and she intends to create statues resembling them. However, after Susie comments that the party could refuse, Queen admits that she would resort to using someone else instead.

As Kris, Susie and Ralsei ride roller coasters, Queen launches flying cages at them, but misses, remarking that it was a "Tactical Calibration". Queen tries to get Noelle to fight the Lightners, but Noelle only converses with Susie. Queen then summons Berdly; when Susie claims Queen had Berdly join, Queen admits she did not ask him, though she has convinced him to assist. Queen spectates their encounter from a distance, and avoids Berdly's attempts at interaction. After his plea for help, Queen postpones helping him, and informs the party of the roller coaster's tracks being incomplete before leaving.

After defeating Berdly, Kris meets Noelle, who has escaped from Queen. Queen decides to form a truce with Kris until she finds Noelle. Later on, it becomes increasingly evident that Queen genuinely cares for Noelle. Queen tells Kris that she only wants to entertain people, and asks if being evil to reach this goal is such a bad thing.

Eventually, the Lightners, including Noelle and Berdly, reach Queen's Mansion, where Queen declares the end of her truce and catches everyone but Ralsei in the now-calibrated cages. Lacking a cage and a room in the mansion, Ralsei briefly becomes a butler for Queen. Berdly joins forces with Kris and the others to take down Queen and save Noelle. However, Queen captures Berdly again and uses a wire to control him. After the party battles her and the controlled Berdly, Queen once again escapes before delivering a monologue about the Knight and wanting to use the power of the Lightners to expand the Cyber World with more Dark Fountains. Susie strikes her down, but Queen retreats to her giant robot.

After the two parties duel with their giant robots, Noelle tells Queen that she will never be happy under the latter's control. Shortly afterwards, Ralsei informs everyone - including Queen - that creating more Dark Fountains will bring on the Roaring, an event that will destroy all Darkners and devastate the world. Queen realizes the error of her ways and ends hostilities with the Lightners. She then relocates to Castle Town with the rest of the recruited Darkners.

A cutscene in Castle Town reveals she has some history with King, and she quickly becomes friends with Lancer. She also states that she is taking in Lancer as her new son in the aforementioned cutscene.

Weird Route

After the Weird Route is initiated, Queen remains absent until the room where she delivers her monologue about the Knight. She laments her inability to find Berdly, and states Noelle is in no condition to help her, countermanding Susie's demand that "She needs to wake up!" that Noelle "Has Already Awakened Too Much" and must instead "Sleep Away Into A Darker, Darker Dream".

Confronted by the party, she boards her GIGA Queen mecha until Ralsei warns her about the Roaring, to which she shuts down the robot and promises Kris that she will not attempt to stop them from sealing the Fountain. Susie tries to cheer the disheartened Queen up, then returns to talk to Noelle once more while Kris seals the Fountain.

Chapter 3

During Ralsei's explanation of the Dark Worlds to Susie, Queen makes a brief appearance, where she is seen reverting back into a laptop in the Light World.

Chapter 4

Queen can once again be found in Castle Town, this time in a room of her own on the third floor of Ralsei's castle. She clings between two large boomboxes in a position similar to when she hides from Berdly in Chapter 2, sipping acid through a straw and offering some to the party when spoken to, which Susie declines. She can also appear in Lancer's room whereupon interacting with him, she makes fun of Ralsei for having no "Meat Or Fruit In His Castle Walls".

If no recruits from Chapter 2 are present, Queen's room is barren, save for herself and Trashy. She asks the party for any "Cyber Guys" they might have ran into to turn into Darkners and even offers payment so she can play games on Kris's phone and befriend "Flapping Bird".

An excerpt of the prophecy that can be found in the Dark Sanctuary mentions Queen, stating that "THE QUEEN'S CHARIOT CANNOT BE STOPPED", likely referencing the section of Cyber City traversed by driving Queen's car. During the fight with the Hammer of Justice, he summarizes Lord of the Hammer's second chapter as "The heroes do battle in chariots to save the Queen.", likely referencing the party's recruitment of Queen after they warn her about the Roaring.

Chapter 5

Queen appears inside of Ralsei's castle, helping Susie take her measurements for her date with Noelle, as well as printing her newly designed outfit; once Susie refuses to wear the outfit, Queen "undoes" the outfit.

Queen can later appear inside of a closet in Susie's room, printing all possible outfits, and in her room, which is now fused with Tenna's room, playing basketball: there, she invites Ralsei to play with her to prove his abilities.

Queen appears after the credits of Chapter 5, helping Susie decorate Castle Town for Noelle's arrival.

Relationships

King

After returning to Castle Town at the end of Chapter 2, if all Darkners from the Cyber World are recruited, an interaction between King and Queen occurs in front of his cell, where he calls her "Queenie Beanie" and she calls him "Kingy Wingy". These pet names reinforce the possibility of past relations.

Lancer

For Lancer's perspective, see Lancer § Queen.

If all Darkners from the Cyber World are recruited, Queen declares herself as Lancer's mother and decides to care for him after the events of Chapter 2. However, given her quip that she arbitrarily decided that just now whilst talking to King, it is unlikely the two are biologically related. Later they can be seen hanging out on lawn chairs on the second floor of Ralsei's castle, where upon talking to them Lancer says Queen is like a third dad or a "girldad" to him. Queen also joins in on Lancer's playful teasing of Ralsei at multiple points, even copying his friendly insults such as "peachboy". Lancer seems to look up to Queen, adding Queen-themed memorabilia to his room in Chapter 4.

Kris

Kris is possibly the only party member Queen takes a genuine liking to when they first meet. When they are on their own in Cyber City, Queen compliments Kris's unbothered personality and their lack of opinions, and tries to play an arcade game with them, seeming to have enjoyed playing against them the first time. She also makes a truce with Kris so that they can find their respective allies while entrusting Kris to not tell Berdly where she is hiding whenever he appears alone. Twice in the game, Queen prompts Kris to grab a banana in the path for the potassium.

Ralsei

Queen seems prone to overlooking Ralsei's presence, often only addressing Kris and Susie and forgetting to include him in her plans. When capturing Kris, Susie, and Berdly at her mansion, she forgot to prepare a fourth cage for Ralsei and instead decides to employ him as a butler, which he accepts. During the GIGA Queen fight she tries to appeal to the team with bribes, but is unable to recall if there was a third party member. Despite this Ralsei invites her to their Castle Town, where she joins in on Lancer's playful teasing of him.

Noelle

For most of Chapter 2, Queen's main goal seems to be finding Noelle so that she can use her as a willing peon in her bid for world dominance. Naturally terrified by this, Noelle tries to hide from her, expecting Queen to think of her as weak enough to manipulate. However, when Queen is unaware of Noelle's presence, she expresses both respect for her strength as well as genuine concern for her well-being, fearing her lost and alone in the city. In reality, Queen is revealed to be trying to make a perfect world for her and Noelle, albeit through confusing and dangerous means and without considering Noelle's input. Queen also seems to hold great affection for Noelle, showing in her use of pet-names, her need to be there for and her wish for Noelle to be happy. After capturing Noelle and being defeated, Queen realizes that Noelle needs to choose her own happiness and encourages her to do so. Noelle in turn starts to care for Queen, seeming sad when she runs out of power. Even in the Weird Route, Queen actively cares for Noelle and prefers to let her sleep when she seems unwell.

Berdly

Queen appears to have threatened Berdly into becoming her minion at first, but quickly grew to regret doing so. She barely puts up with him, mistaking his name as "Burghley" (or forgetting it altogether) and frequently ditching him because she finds him annoying. In the battle with Queen and the mind-controlled Berdly, she reveals that she only intended to use the face plug on him. However, Queen warns Berdly not to remove the plug because she knows he will be hurt and is absent from her mansion due to being busy searching for him in the Weird Route, indicating that she has at least some regard for his safety.

Jevil

If Jevil is defeated violently in Chapter 1, he mentions that "THE "QUEEN" [WILL RETURN]". This, along with the fact Tasque Manager appears to have a personal dislike of Jevil, makes it likely he has met Queen in person.

Creation and development

When creating Queen, Toby Fox spent a long time figuring out her design, as he wanted her to look intimidating and cool. Queen's design took inspiration from several existing characters, including Hexadecimal (ReBoot), the Alien Queen (Aliens), Power Rangers villains, and Rosemaster (Cucumber Quest). Queen's head shape was also difficult to design as he wanted it to be unique enough to differentiate her from those existing characters.

After Toby began writing her dialogue, Queen evolved into a more humorous character, a change he decided to reflect in her design. He initially planned for Queen's talk sprites to face forward, but realized they greatly lacked in personality. One of the designs Toby considered was a handkerchief-like head shape with giant hoop earrings, which he thought evoked the image of an eccentric aunt/mother figure. In the end, Toby decided to go with a more simple design as it felt easier to draw. Temmie Chang also helped Toby with designing Queen's flying hover chair.

When creating Chapter 2's soundtrack, Toby made an unfinished version of Queen's boss theme after finishing her theme song. He originally planned to use it for Queen back when she was intimidating, as well as for Berdly's boss battle. However, the issue was that this version did not match any of the theme melodies created for those characters. This was the song he listened to the most when working on Chapter 2 as it was his favorite unused track made for that Chapter.

During Chapter 2's development, Chess handled a few cutscenes involving Queen and even stated that she was her favorite character to make things for. When developing an early version of Queen's boss fight, Taxiderby "sent" Toby a fake bug report as a birthday present, which displayed the Annoying Dog being flailed around like a mace until it exploded and purposefully caused the game to crash with a following error message. This attack was never fixed. Toby himself was responsible for voicing Queen.

Outside of Deltarune

In ISSUE 5 - Winter 2024 of the Newsletter, three random Valentine's Day cards were included in the email version of the Newsletter. Queen has a total of three different Valentine's cards, all of which are common rarity. The first is Queen running "Valentimes.EXE", with the red hearts border glitching. The second is Queen offering to drive the recipient in a car at a 50% slower rate. The third is a card meant for Queen's "Ex", presumably King, who she temporarily unblocked.

Attacks

• Stomp: One of Queen's boots drops down from the top of the bullet board on the left, middle, or right sections of it. The order of the stomped sections is random, though the three sections are always stomped in a row. A blinking "!" box appears before the boot comes down, similar to one of Asgore's attacks from Undertale. Eleven stomps happen before the attack ends, though the eleventh boot does not reach the bottom of the bullet board.
• Exploding Heads: Vectorized heads of Queen resembling the ones seen in the Deltarune Chapter 2 start-up animation form up around the bullet board and laugh before exploding into smaller, spinning white heads of her. The placement and speed at which they form are random. Later on in the fight, the heads appear quicker as well.
• Queen Laser: Screens similar to those in the Cyber World appear outside the bullet board, containing green cursors aimed at the SOUL. They shoot a quick beam from whatever direction the cursor was aimed. A faint red line can also be seen to signify the path, similar to one of King's attacks in Chapter 1.
  • Later in the fight, Queen combines Stomp and Queen Laser, and eventually all three attacks.
• Berdly Tornado: Berdly descends from above and unleashes waves of six tornadoes, three to the left of the bullet board and three to the right, each pair of which crosses each other in the middle of the board on different times. Berdly fires four waves in the beginning of the fight. Later on in the battle, he begins firing five waves, which are closer together. The spot in which the tornadoes cross may also be slightly off-center.
• New Social Media: Various heads in boxes scroll alongside the bullet board, spouting generic topics and keywords that scroll either left or right, almost as if they are texting to each other. After this attack occurs for the first time, an added blue icon containing Queen's head comes in after a bit and spouts out a red "DRAMA", causing chaos among the crowd, as the icons freeze and start cursing everywhere, with red grawlixes flying across all directions, and Queen's icon laughs at the madness. Any boxes with the head of an Everyman, which is quite rare, do not attack.
• Plug: Two plugs electrify the bullet board's border and alternate spitting out sparks in different directions, while the board itself moves left and right. This resembles King's spike wall attack combined with the Werewire's spark attack. Later in the fight, the bullet board starts rotating and only one plug is present, but it spits out more sparks.
• Wine: When she fills up her glass to produce an acid wall, it is preceded by an attack involving a chalice-shaped bullet board, where white drops of liquid rain down and fill up the glass, forcing the SOUL to stick to the top of the bullet board. After the first use, the chalice begins to tilt as well.
• Ultimate Attack: A download bar reading "DOWNLOADING: ULTIMATE ATTACK" appears above her, but stops at 60%. This process then fails and a bunch of different pop-ups appears to cover up most of the board as her vector heads start popping up. Queen cannot be defeated without her using this attack; her HP is locked at 1% otherwise.

Queen attacks in the following order before either her HP or Berdly's MERCY reaches 50%:

3. Exploding Heads I
4. Queen Laser
5. New Social Media I
6. Plug I
7. Stomp + Queen Laser

Afterwards, Queen randomly chooses between the previous attacks, except for Plug. After putting up her shield for the second time, Queen performs the first order again, and afterwards switches to the following order:

1. New Social Media II
2. Berdly Tornado II
3. Exploding Heads II
4. Plug II
5. Stomp + Queen Laser + Exploding Heads

Afterwards, Queen randomly chooses between these five attacks for the remainder of the battle. Additionally, she uses Wine when Berdly's MERCY is above 25% or Queen's HP falls below 75%, when Berdly's MERCY is above 50% or Queen's HP falls below 50%, and when Berdly's MERCY is above 75% or Queen's HP falls below 25%, and her Ultimate Attack the turn after her shield is destroyed for the third time. When using either Wine or Ultimate Attack, Queen pauses the sequence, then continues from where she left off in it after using these attacks.

Multiple weakpoints are exposed on Berdly's cable, two initially but increases up to six as the battle progresses. [MENU] must be pressed to throw Kris at the weakpoints to loosen Berdly's wire. Each weakpoint hit loosens the wire by 12.5% in phase 1, 8.33...% in phase 2, 6.25% in phase 3, and 5% in phase 4 (meaning a maximum of 25% can be attained with each usage of this ACT). If the party pushes the battle by violence at first, then starts to loosen Berdly after the third shield is broken, it is possible that 6 weakpoints show up on a wire at once. Thus, the wire can be loosened by up to 30%.

RedBuster

Red Damage

Costs 60% TP. Launches a strong attack at the enemy, inflicting damage based on Susie's AT and MAGIC.

DualHeal

Heals everyone

Costs 50% TP. Heals the party based on Ralsei's MAGIC.

Loosens Berdly's cable by 5%, or 8% if Susie is the only party member up.

Strategy

During her first encounter, Queen uses Berdly controlled by a Werewire cable to attack the party for her. The battle ends when Berdly is fully loosened from the cable or Queen's (chair's) health is depleted.

On three occasions (specifically, when Berdly's MERCY is above 25% or Queen's HP falls below 75%; when Berdly's MERCY is above 50% or Queen's HP falls below 50%; and when Berdly's MERCY is above 75% or Queen's HP falls below 25%), Queen uses Wine, then puts up a shield powered by her chalice of battery acid, protecting her from attacks and preventing the party from loosening Berdly's wire. The party must then deplete the shield's power, after which the battle continues as normal. Each of the shields has a certain amount of HP, with the first one having 400 HP and the second and third ones having 500 HP. Aside from directly attacking them, the shields' HP can be depleted via ACTing. Specifically, each single Toast depletes one-sixth of the first shield's HP, and one-eight of the other shields' HP. However, if the ACTing party member is the only non-downed one, 2.5 times as much HP is depleted. A Group Toast depletes as much HP as the three party members Toasting separately. Also, the first, second, and third shields are made out of seven, ten, or twelve rectangular sections, respectively, which becomes a darker green as the shield's HP is depleted, allowing the player to see roughly how much HP the shield has left.

If two shield thresholds are passed in a single turn (for example, bringing Queen's HP from 76% to 49%), only the later threshold that was passed has its shield go up, with the other one being skipped entirely. It is also possible to skip the last shield by lowering Queen's HP from 25% to 0 in a single turn.

Trivia

Queen's wireframe head shown upon starting Chapter 2

• Queen's distinctive laugh can be heard upon starting Chapter 2. A wireframe version of Queen also appears on the splash screen before the Chapter 2 file is selected. It is also used for one of her attacks during her boss battle.
• Queen's "serial number" contains all of the letters needed to spell her name, in the right order.
• Queen shares a number of similarities with Princess Shroob from the Mario & Luigi series. Both characters are shown carrying a chalice (which may or may not be filled with green liquid), have red eyes with black sclera, and are a part of a royal lineage. Their boss battles in particular are often compared because of their use of floating thrones and defense shields.
• Despite wearing pants, there are some sprites such as her run sprite that gives her outfit a leotard-like appearance. There are also some odd sprites that portray the markings on the sides of her head as dark blue rather than black.
• Her similar appearance to King and Lancer despite being unrelated to playing cards may be a reference to the Solitaire application that is typically pre-installed on a Microsoft device. An unused attack of hers also references Microsoft Solitaire.
  • She may also represent the Queen of Hearts, as her dark screen eyes seem to form the shape of a heart, similar to King and Lancer's eyes being covered by the shape of a spade.
• The sound effect and iris-out transition used after the scene where Queen captures Kris, Susie, and Berdly is a reference to the level-clear animation from Super Mario World.
• There is a bug in the first fight with Queen—if Rude Buster or RedBuster is used to attack her acid shield, the number of damage that has been dealt does not appear.
• Queen's "New Social Media" attack randomly picks four of the following words every time it is used:
