From Deltarune Wiki

I am the philosopher. Amen.

Organikk, Chapter 4

Organikk (JP: オルガニック) is an organ-like Darkner encountered in Chapter 4 of Deltarune. They appear first as inanimate statues in the Dark Sanctuary, before reappearing as enemies and NPCs in the 2nd and 3rd Sanctuaries.

Profile

Appearance

Organikk is a humanoid figure shrouded in long pink or purple robes reminiscent of shēnyī (深衣 "deep robes") worn by traditional Chinese philosophers. Usually, their arms are linked within the deep sleeves, a sign of respect commonly associated with Confucianism. They wear a mask made up of a set of yellow flue pipes without labia. Instead, only one pipe has a vertical hole halfway down their body, like a flute or recorder with a single finger hole. The pipes slide back and forth like a piston mechanism.

When attacked, they shield themselves and the pipes spread apart, seeming to reveal their true face, cast in shadow: a big round horned head with two vertical yellow slits for eyes. Lastly, when spared, the Organikk seems to smile through their mask: the pipes' toe holes curve upwards like mouths, and the finger hole shuts like an eye.

While Organikks can be encountered as enemies in the 2nd Sanctuary, there are multiple Organikk variants who are never hostile. The two types can be distinguished by the color of their robeshostile Organikks wear bright pink robes, while NPCs wear a more muted, purplish color. Some of these variants have mask shapes which differ from those of the enemies. These are a mask shaped like 4 branches, a mask shaped like a cross, and a mask shaped like a disk.

Personality

Organikk is an inquisitive philosopher. They talk about the nature of their Dark World and the prophecy, and often ask questions. Some of their questions are rhetorical, cryptic, or koan-like, while other thoughts are plain nonsense, like alchemizing acorns. They believe that the Wafers are their ancestors, just like the Wafers believe about them. They see the maskless Wafers as simpler people than themselves, and wish to return to such a simple life. Wafers are among many petrified Darkners whom the Organikks observe and study in their gallery, formulating theories on the supposed past that are not always correct.

Etymology

"Organikk" is a portmanteau of "church organ" and "organic".

The reason for the spelling with "k" is uncertain. It may be a simple corruption, derived from the male given name "Nick", or influenced by the Slavic suffix "-ik" seen in words like "bolshevik".

Main story

Organikks first appear as stone statues within the Dark Sanctuary. One can be found next to the donation waterfall, and another can be found in a room being observed by a circle of Wafers, who revere them as their ancestors. An optional dark room leading to some of the notes required for the Golden Piano is a maze of what appears to be whispering Organikks, before the lights return and it is revealed that all of them were statues the entire time.

Upon Susie's creation of the 2nd Sanctuary, Organikks, along with all the other inanimate statues, come to life, with the former Dark Sanctuary inhabitants turning to stone themselves. The dynamic between them becomes reversed, as the Organikk within the room full of Wafers now reveres them as its own ancestor, and the dark room full of Organikks is now a gallery of petrified Dark Sanctuary inhabitants. Non-petrified Organikks frequently appear as NPCs within the Dark Sanctuaries, and are often found near parts of the prophecy and close to Chapter 4's Egg location. An Organikk in the ROOTS room provides the hint to go between rooms before saying a randomly jumbled-up version of the phrase "Lost where the forest would grow, the children followed the pointed tail."

In the 3rd Sanctuary, the 2nd Sanctuary inhabitants are no longer statues. The Wafers do not seem to take kindly to the now-animate Organikks, with the one in the circle mentioning that the Wafers desire to "kick their ass". Due to this disdain, the Wafers begin to deny that the Organikks are their ancestors. The Dark Gallery room also becomes inaccessible, as there is a long line attempting to get out which is being held up by a sole Organikk who is the only one in the line to get into the room.

In battle

Appears with

Attacks

  • Organikk summons vertical beams that stretch the height of the bullet board. If Organikk is alone, the beams produce music notes that travel across the bullet board in opposite directions.
  • Organikk summons sheet music over the bullet board and populates it with music notes that fall down at random. Quarter and half notes fall in a straight line, and eighth notes fall in a wavy pattern.

Trivia

  • Organikks may be based on the Biwa-bokuboku from Japanese folklore, as both are depicted as anthropomorphic beings with robe-like garments and musical instruments in place of or obscuring their heads.
Organikk overworld unused.png
Organikk's unused sprites
  • Organikk has two unused sprites: one where they have blue robes (spr_organ_enemy_blue), and another that is a placeholder of their Spared sprite (spr_organ_enemy_happy_temp).
  • Organikk's mention of "Do re mon" may be a reference to the popular Japanese animated franchise Doraemon.
  • Many of Organikk's quotes reference Chinese culture and philosophy:
    • Organikk's dialogue lines "What am I? Am I a butterfly?" and "What am I? Am I a man?" are a reference to the Daoist philosopher Zhuang Zhou (莊週 Zhuāng Zhōu or 莊子 Zhuāngzǐ, "Master Zhuang") from China, and his parable of the "Butterfly Dream", in his eponymous text. Within, Master Zhuang asks if one is a man dreaming of being a butterfly, or the reverse.
    • Additionally, "filial piety" (veneration of ancestors and reverence to one's family) is mentioned by an Organikk in the overworld. This is a reference to the Confucianist Classic of Filial Piety (孝經 Xiào jīng), a text featuring a dialogue between Confucius (孔丘 Kǒng Qiū or 孔子 Kǒngzǐ "Master Kong") and his disciple Zengzi (曾子 Zēngzǐ). The text discusses filial piety as a way of honoring one's ancestors and parents.
    • Organikk's flavor text, "Organikk claps with one hand.", is a reference to the Zen kōan "Two hands clap and there is a sound. What is the sound of one hand?"
  • The way Organikk NPCs refer to statues of Wafers as their "ancestors", while Wafers do the same for statues of Organikks is similar to the concept of "dancestors" in Homestuck, a webcomic Toby Fox composed music for. The term "dancestors" (a combination of "descendant" and "ancestor") refers to pairs of characters who are one the ancestor of the other in one universe, while in another the roles are switched.
  • One Organikk says "I heard there's something inside the acorn. But I don't know where to find an acorn. Or even what one is in the first place." This is similar to one of River Person's possible quotes in Undertale, where they say "Tra la la. What's inside an acorn? It's really just a mystery." In Western alchemic traditions, acorns are a symbol of growth and transformation.
  • Organikk's in-battle quotes, "It was glowing. The voice was glowing!", "What is DELTARUNE?" and "What isn't DELTARUNE?" appear to reference the voice or the prophecy.
  • In the Japanese translation of Deltarune, the word "LOVE" in the in-battle quote "The answer... ... was LOVE?" is written in English despite the rest of the quote being rendered in Japanese.
  • While Organikks are back from being petrified in the 2nd Sanctuary, one can be seen in the Gallery room who remains stone. A nearby Organikk calls them an "overachiever", indicating that they turned to stone as part of their archaeological endeavors.
  • Backtracking after arriving in the Old Man's study in the 2nd Sanctuary gives access to a Wicabel and Organikk fight.[6] In this fight, no battle message is set,[7] causing the default message, "It is known.", to appear.
  • The randomly generated sheet music (used by one of Organikk's attacks) uses six different pitches, plus two unused higher pitches. The eight pitches in order are B♭ D♭ E♭ A♭ B♭ D♭ E♭ F. This is not a scale, but it does fit the key signature of From Now On as well as its first several notes. (Internally, the eight pitches are just labeled 'a' through 'h'.)
    • The sheet music shown on-screen does not match actual sheet music, even accounting for key signatures, as all of the notes are drawn as space notes instead of some of them being line notes. The six notes drawn would be D F A C E G on a treble clef.
