Toriel

From Deltarune Wiki

Kris, if you do not wake up, we will be late for school!

Toriel to Kris, Chapter 1

Toriel (JP: トリエル) is a major returning character and the mother of Kris and Asriel in Deltarune. She lives with her children at the Dreemurr residence, located at the northern end of Hometown.

Profile

Appearance

Toriel has white fur, a small tuft of fur on the top of her head, small white horns, and long ears. She has wide eyes, a snout, and a pair of visible fangs. Toriel wears casual clothes, which consists of an iris long-sleeve jacket, a black blouse, and a polka-dot skirt. Toriel also wears semi-rimmed iris glasses and a heart pendant. However, the glasses are only featured on her overworld sprite, and the latter is only visible on her talksprite.

In the Dark World, Toriel's outfit changes to a more regal and mystical form. Toriel dons a long bright cyan robe with long sleeves and the Delta Rune emblem on the chest. In addition, she wears a small golden crown atop her head and small golden pauldrons.

In Chapter 4, Toriel temporarily wears her church service attire for choir. It is a replica of the Delta Rune tabard that her Undertale counterpart wears, which is dark purple and has long white sleeves.

Personality

Toriel is kind and motherly. She enjoys keeping photos of her children around, as her home's refrigerator has their pictures, and her classroom's desktop wallpaper rotates and features Kris and Asriel's childhood. Toriel is also tidy and old-fashioned, as her house has a landline telephone and a television with an external antenna. Her interests include baking, teaching, reading, snails, and puns. Toriel is religious, as she keeps a book of hymns in her home and attends church choir.

Toriel is prone to being judgmental. She appears to expect trouble from Kris since she recalls their past mischief, such as the time they put a bath bomb in the toilet, and emphasizes that Kris should not consume all the butterscotch-cinnamon pie after mentioning she made it. Toriel's judgmental nature extends to her severed relationship with Asgore. While she refrains from criticizing Asgore directly in front of Kris and allows them to freely visit him, she lets her disdainful feelings toward him show on her face, and rebuffs his attempts at reconciliation.

Main story

History

In her younger years, Toriel attended college parties with Asgore and Rudy, the latter of whom describes her as "fuzzy n' sweet on the outside, a total NUT on the inside!" Though initially reluctant to cut loose, she tended to get very excited, and once hit Rudy clear across the room with a key lime pie.[2]

At her wedding to Asgore, she carried a bouquet of seven flowers.[3] During their marriage, they had a son, Asriel, and later adopted Kris, raising the two like siblings. When Toriel learned that Asriel had kissed "someone", she reacted badly and the family went to church practically every day that week.[4] Toriel and her family also used to order the special at QC's Diner on Sundays after service.[5] At an unspecified point in time, Toriel found Susie crying at the graveyard, to which she took the latter to QC's Diner, bought her a hot chocolate and comforted her.[6]

At one point, Toriel divorced Asgore, retaining the house and becoming the primary caretaker of their children.

Toriel works as a teacher at the local school, and teaches younger students. Her name, written as "Ms. Toriel" on the blackboard, has not been erased for a while. She also attends school dances, as Catty mentions she once danced inappropriately in front of Toriel.[7]

Chapter 1

At the start of Deltarune, Toriel wakes Kris, telling them they can still make it to school if they hurry.

When Kris exits the house, she mentions Asriel's upcoming visit, and wonders if he will still enjoy coming home to their little town. She takes Kris to school in her van, passing by several neighbors along the way, and holds their hand as they enter the building. At the hallway, Toriel hugs Kris before letting them go to class.

Before Kris exits the school building at the end of the day, Toriel phones them if they do not use their Cell Phone to call her first. Toriel explains she was "worried sick" after she had tried to call their cell phone and had waited half an hour for them after school. She feels obligated to punish Kris for disappearing, but allows them to stay out longer after learning that they spent the day with "a friend".

Kris can learn from Sans that Toriel visited his store the previous night and bought chocolate kisses. If Kris visits Asgore in his Flower King shop, they can receive a "secret" bouquet to give to her.

When Kris returns home, Toriel has just finished baking a "butterscotch-cinnamon pie" and is sitting on "Chairiel" reading a book. She lets them know that if they go to sleep, the pie will be cool enough to eat when they wake up later. If Kris keeps going in and out of the Dreemurr residence, additional interactions occur:

  • Next time, she acknowledges Kris being active.[8]
  • After the seventh time, is confused, though makes a joke.[9]

If Kris chooses to interact with her, she can reminisce about a post birthday incident that caused Asriel's dislike of green eggs, Kris's childhood belief that they would grow horns like their family, or comment on the pie and it feeling a bit lonely at home. If they decline to talk, she notices that Kris looks tired and recommends sleep.

If Kris has the bouquet, they can give it to Toriel. When she realizes the flowers are from Asgore, she promises to find "something" to do with them. After giving her the bouquet and re-entering the room, the trash can emanates an even stronger floral scent, implying Toriel threw away the bouquet. This scent remains in Chapter 2.

In the bathroom, Kris can flush the toilet multiple times, which can cause Toriel to knock on the door.

  • On the third flush, Toriel knocks on the door out of concern.[10]
  • After the sixth flush, she knocks and assumes Kris flushed a bath bomb.[11]
  • After the ninth flush, she knocks for the third and final time, and gives a stern warning.[12]

Chapter 2

Toriel questioning Kris over the empty pie tin

The following morning, Toriel is shocked at her discovery. She rushes into Kris's room with Kris's blue-handled knife in an empty pie tin, and assumes they ate the pie. Amused, she asks if she has to "lock the oven again" before getting Kris out of bed and driving them to school.

If Kris wanders towards entrance hall after obtaining the "trash orb" from the unused classroom, they can overhear Toriel conversing with Alphys about Kris. Toriel inquires on how Kris has been performing in class, and if they have been "up to anything strange". Alphys responds that they are doing well, and when she notices Kris nearby with a ball of stuff balanced on their head, states that Kris is "normal". Toriel is relieved, though admits to being "a little concerned lately" for Kris.[13]

In the hallway, depending if Kris has overheard, Kris can call Toriel to let her know they either made a "trash orb", or is "normal", which puzzles her. If Kris immediately calls her after in the hallway, Toriel does not see Kris, as she turns away from Alphys and the main hall.

If Kris calls after leaving Castle Town but before going to study at the library, Toriel jokingly tells them that if Berdly brings up Asriel's overdue library book fine, she will throw a smoke bomb so they can escape.

After returning from the Cyber World, Kris and Susie can enter Sans's grocery store. If they explore the leftmost side of the building, Toriel enters. She explains to Sans that she forgot the eggs that she purchased previously. The two share many egg-related puns until Asgore barges into the store to joke that he is her "eggs-husband". After an awkward silence among the group, Toriel attempts to exit, only for Asgore to ask her what will they do when Asriel returns home. She simply says that they should discuss that soon before leaving.[14]

When Kris and Susie arrive at the Dreemurr residence, before Susie can walk home, Toriel opens the front door and notices her. Elated to see Kris's new friend, Toriel invites Susie inside and suggests that she help make a pie with her and Kris.

Until Next Time soundtrack.png

Kris goes to the bathroom to wash their hands as Toriel and Susie begin to prepare the pie, with the two's friendship deepening before they question Kris's absence. When the pie is nearly finished, Toriel realizes she left the sugar in the car, going outside to retrieve it, though she returns without it. Presumably alarmed from her findings outside, she disregards finishing the pie and invites Susie to sleep over for the night.

After Kris and Susie fall asleep in the living room, Toriel calls the police. She reports that she saw someone crawling around her house, and that her van's tires were slashed. After Undyne confirms her visit, Toriel sits down in the living room and begins to read a book.

Later that night, she is seen sound asleep as Kris makes a Dark Fountain in the center of the room.

Chapter 3

Toriel screenshot gachapon.png
Toriel imprisoned inside a gachapon capsule

Like all other Lightners, Toriel's appearance changes inside the newly-formed Dark World, her nightgown becoming royal garb and her chair transforming into a golden throne. Still slumbering, she lands in the couch cliffs, and is found by Tenna's staff shortly after the first round of TV Time.[15] He has her encased in a gachapon capsule in an effort to prevent her from waking up, and keeps the knowledge of her whereabouts from his contestants - Kris, Susie, and Ralsei - by only advertising her as an unspecified "grand prize".

Following TV Time's second round, the party discovers the truth, finding Toriel at the far end of Cold Place. They attempt to hide behind Toriel's capsule upon Tenna's arrival, though he finds them and transports them back to the show.

Upon their return to the Cold Place to get Toriel back, a flashback scene occurs with the Holiday and Dreemurr families watching TV together at the Dreemurr residence. Each member disappears one-by-one, with Toriel, at the far left of the couch next to the empty spot left by Asgore, disappearing last.

Susie screenshot protect Toriel.png
A wounded Susie stops the Knight from taking Toriel

After the subsequent battle, Susie reasons with Tenna, giving him hope but insisting that he give back Toriel because "She's got people that need her, too." This causes him to reconsider his allegiances and free Toriel from the capsule, announcing that the party has won "the grand prize" and that the family is back together. This brief "reunion" is interrupted by the Knight, who puts Tenna out of commission and attempts to abduct Toriel, commencing a clash between it and the heroes. Regardless of the battle's outcome, the Knight brings them to their knees and attempts to kidnap Toriel again despite Susie's desperation to protect her. The Knight is then interrupted again by Undyne and takes her instead before fleeing TV World.

If Kris, Susie, and Ralsei fail to defeat the Knight, interacting with Toriel has the narration state that she is sleeping peacefully. If they do defeat it, interacting with Toriel reveals that she appears to be having a nightmare.[16][17][18] Toriel remains asleep for the rest of the Chapter.

Chapter 4

Toriel presumably awakes after Kris seals the Dreemurr residence Fountain, later waking them up at breakfast time. As they and Susie eat, she comments on Kris's sleeping and admits she had strange dreams. Toriel then recalls that church service will occur soon, and invites Susie to go to church with them. She goes upstairs to prepare and find clothes for her. Downstairs, Toriel apologizes that only Asriel's old clothes fits Susie, though she is amused.

Hymn soundtrack.png

Inside the church's lobby, Toriel informs that she has to prepare for choir, and asks the two to behave before entering the storage room. During the service in the church hall, Toriel and the choir's singing is represented by Hymn. She also expresses some discomfort at Catty giving her retelling of the prophecy.

Post-service, Toriel speaks with Rudy and Noelle, and occasionally speaks if Kris interacts with either of them. If Kris interacts with her, she recommends that Susie and Kris should return home without her. After Kris has acquired enough clues, Toriel exits the hall. At the church's front door, Toriel asks Kris and Susie if they would like to go to QC's Diner. However, due to Asgore's abrupt appearance and him offering flowers, Toriel excuses herself and returns home.

Before visiting Noelle's House, Toriel can be found reading a book in the Dreemurr residence. She can inquire about Kris and Susie's missing church clothes, and asks Kris to make an excuse for Susie. Either option does not help their situation. If Kris enters the kitchen, Toriel reminds them that she will be returning to church for choir practice.

The Ol' Jitterbug soundtrack.png

Due to harsh rain that started at some point after Kris and Susie's visit to Noelle's House, Toriel cancels choir practice and attempts to get home. She is ultimately forced to enter Sans's store for shelter, unaware that Kris and Susie are looking for her. Sometime after the two enter the Dark Sanctuary, she invites Sans back to her house due to him entertaining her, seemingly after the rain abates.

At the end of the Chapter, Kris and Susie return to the house, where they find an inebriated Toriel and Sans dancing the "jitter bug" together, embarrassing Kris and causing Susie to hurriedly leave. They continue dancing well into the night, preventing Kris from sleeping and ultimately inspiring them to jump onto the windowsill, likely contemplating leaving the house.

Relationships

Kris

Kris is Toriel's adoptive child, and the only family member currently living in her house.

Years prior to Deltarune, it is implied that Toriel researched how to raise a human child, as she frequently borrowed How To Care For A Human from the library.[19] She and Asgore also bought a headband with red horns for them in an attempt to make up for their human child's inability to grow horns,[20] implying that they wanted to lessen Kris's insecurity from looking different from their family.

Toriel is very patient and motherly toward Kris, calling them "honey", still taking them to school, being physically affectionate, helping them with school projects,[21] and being generally permissive of their antics. She does try to limit Kris's impulsiveness, however, such as locking chocolates in her room, and tries to make sure they get home before sunset on weekdays. She does not punish Kris when they misbehave, being annoyed rather than angry when they eat an entire pie, and at the most sends them to bed early. While she worries about them and either checks in on them directly or via Alphys, Toriel is very open to Kris's self-expression and is happy when they spend time with friends, such as when they are hanging out with Susie after school.[22]

Due to the Dreemurr family's separation, caused by Toriel's and Asgore's divorce as well as Asriel's departure for college, Toriel seems to have a somewhat strained relationship with Kris compared to when they were younger. The family appears to have fought frequently in this timeframe[23] and Kris became more withdrawn afterwards, as they stopped watching TV with Toriel or doing other activities that the family used to do together.

Toriel does not comment on the lack of personal items or the large bloodstain on Kris's side of the children's bedroom, is unconcerned by the long time they spend washing their hands in the bathroom, and expects certain strange actions from them. This may imply she does not bring up her concerns to Kris directly, as she does mention being worried to Alphys.[13]

Asgore

Asgore and Toriel overworld awkward.gif
Toriel uncomfortable with Asgore's attempts to win her back

Toriel and Asgore divorced sometime before the events of Deltarune for unknown reasons. Asgore often follows Toriel around and gives her flowers equally as often, much to her annoyance. Asgore's desperate attempts to reconcile with Toriel often place her in situations that leave her uncomfortable enough to avoid talking to him as much as possible.

Despite their strained relationship, Toriel still cares about Asgore's well-being, as she prays[24] for him at church and is grateful that Carol financially supports him.[25] There are also a few traces of him remaining in the Dreemurr residence.

Susie

Toriel and Susie first met before the events of Deltarune, when Toriel encountered a crying Susie on the memorial bench in the graveyard, and took her to the diner to talk and cheer her up.[6] This earned Susie's respect, as she refers to Toriel as a good mother during Chapter 1 and does not wish her ill.[26]

Toriel and Susie are officially introduced to each other at the end of Chapter 2,[27] where Toriel invites Susie into her home for pie and a sleepover. Susie tries to be more respectful around Toriel, referring to her as "Ma'am" and trying not to swear, though Toriel does not expect her to be overly polite. The two quickly get more comfortable around each other and start making puns while baking together.

During Chapter 3, Susie becomes protective of Toriel upon learning she is imprisoned in TV World, and even throws herself into a fight against the Knight to prevent her abduction.[28]

In Chapter 4, both of them briefly chat about Kris and the damaged TV before Kris wakes up, and Toriel makes breakfast for all of them. Toriel invites Susie to go to church with them, eager to share her religion, and even offers Asriel's clothes to Susie. Upon Kris and Susie's discovery of the Dark Sanctuary, one of Susie's primary motivations is to ensure Toriel's safety, as she and Kris assume Toriel is stuck in the Dark World again. At the end of the Chapter, Toriel invites Susie to stay over again, though Susie declines after seeing her getting drunk and dancing with Sans, seeming upset.

Alphys

Toriel helped Alphys earn a job as a teacher in Hometown's school.[29] It is implied she checks in with Alphys frequently, as Alphys's wallpaper is slightly altered in Chapter 2.[30] Toriel has stated to Susie that she is "good friends" with Alphys, who mentions Susie often.

Rudy

Toriel and Rudy overworld fruit juice.gif
Toriel splashing fruit juice on Rudy

Rudy and Toriel have known each other since their college years. While Rudy is bedridden in the hospital, it is implied that she is concerned about him enough to purchase a get well soon card for him and have Kris sign it,[31] as well as insisting that Kris visits him.[32]

When catching up with Rudy in church during Chapter 4, Toriel remains amicable towards him and the two engage in lighthearted banter. However, when Rudy teases her about matters she would rather not discuss,[33][25] Toriel becomes annoyed enough to splash fruit juice on his face.

Sans

Sans and Toriel overworld dancing.gif

Toriel is a customer at Sans's grocery store. Sans mentions that they met the day before Chapter 1 when she was shopping for chocolate kisses.[34] They appear to have become good friends since then, as they both have a fondness for bad jokes and puns, and end up spending much of Chapter 4 together, getting drunk and loudly dancing to a song on the gramophone well into the night.

Outside of Deltarune

Spamton Sweepstakes

During the Spamton Sweepstakes, a private post from Noelle's blog mentions that Kris does not inform Toriel about them getting bullied by Susie.[35]

Undertale

Toriel first appeared as a major character in Undertale, where she is the caretaker of the Ruins. Due to past circumstances, she distanced herself from Asgore and much of monsterkind. She is supportive of any humans she finds in the Ruins, and enjoys baking pies such as Butterscotch Pie.

Her appearance in Deltarune is the same outfit she wears in a post-credits scene from the True Pacifist Route, and her appearance when wearing the choir robes in Hometown matches her standard appearance in Undertale.

Trivia

  • Toriel's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1.
  • Toriel answers the landline telephone with "Dreemurr residence", but refers to herself as "Ms. Toriel" in her classroom.
  • Toriel's dialogue portrait does not depict the glasses from her overworld sprite. This contrasts her Undertale counterpart, who has a matching talksprite when she wears reading glasses.
  • Rudy mentioning how wild Toriel can get at parties and the time she hit him with a key lime pie is likely a parallel to her Undertale counterpart throwing pizzas at Sans.[36]
  • Like her Undertale counterpart, Toriel tends to leave white fur stuck in the drain of the kitchen sink, and a large container of pet shampoo in the bathroom is likely used by her. Unlike her Undertale counterpart, she leaves cinnamony batter on the stovetop, indicating that she does not use fire magic to cook.
  • In Chapter 3, when Tenna calls out Toriel's name in the Cold Place, a snippet of Fallen Down, Toriel's theme from Undertale, plays.
