Shuttah, Island Board, Chapter 3

Shuttah (JP: シャッタア) is a Darkner enemy in Chapter 3 of Deltarune. It is first encountered as a miniboss during the Island Board before later appearing as a much weaker normal enemy.

Profile

Appearance

Shuttah is a humanoid Darkner with yellow, red, blue, and green stripes running vertically along its body. Its feet resemble high heeled shoes. It has a grinning mouth resembling camera film at the top of its torso and two large, yellow-rimmed eyes at the end of each arm. In battle, Shuttah strikes a variety of poses.

In the Island Board, two pillars and a table change to resemble Shuttah's eyes and mouth before its encounter.

Personality

Shuttah is very eccentric and flamboyant, praising the party for their photogenic nature and asking them to pose. It tends to address the party affectionately, using words like "darling" to refer to them.

Shuttah also tends to be very retrospective, especially of the time when TV World used to have no Dark Fountain. As a "camerathing", Shuttah does not believe anything without the picture. This, however, excludes astrology because it considers itself to be "the star".

Etymology

"Shuttah" is an alteration of the term "shutter", which is the device cameras use to control how much light they take in.

Main story

Chapter 3

Shuttah's hand in the couch cliffs

Two detached hands from Shuttah show up at the beginning of the world; one imitating one of the wobbly things from ?????? while sliding down in the couch cliffs, while the other appears behind a trash can to allow the heroes to pose.

Shuttah properly appears on the Island Board, after obtaining either Lanino or Elnina. As the party tries to exit the cave, a voice instructs them to take a group photo. When Kris does so, it declares it a mugshot and accuses them of stealing their camera, as well as the moon and the clouds. Shuttah's face appears out of the objects in the room and asks them to at least take its photo as well, initiating the boss fight. After completing the board and returning to the Green Room, an NPC Shuttah can be found in the southwest corner of the red carpet hall, speaking cryptically about the history of the Dark World and its inhabitants.

Shuttah later reappears throughout TV World as a regular enemy after the party escapes Round 3, appearing alongside other common enemies.

Before re-entering the Green Room, Shuttah appears on the edge of the couch cliffs. When spoken to, it tells Kris about the Darkners that left TV World for "the Far Land", likely Mancountry, and were forgotten. It also asks Kris if they remember the "legend old hermit" who knows the way there. After Kris meets the Bibliox in Nowhere, Shuttah is surprised but remains unconvinced due to the lack of a picture. Once Kris returns from Mancountry, Shuttah laments that Kris suddenly looks much more grown-up and asks them to slow down, wanting to get the picture of their youth.

Chapter 4

If recruited, Shuttah appears in Castle Town in the entrance to Ralsei's castle holding a wildlife photoshoot with various animal Darkners, specifically Tasque, Maus, Poppup, and C. Round.

Chapter 5

If recruited, Shuttah appears east of Castle Town's entrance, hidden behind a trashcan, where it tells the party it wishes to hold a fashion photoshoot.

Attacks

• Drops of water fall down sporadically from the top of the board, while Shuttah's images temporarily freeze them.
• Drops of water move across the board vertically or horizontally, with Shuttah periodically taking images and rotating them.
• Diamond bullets aim for the SOUL, and Shuttah takes a single photo and rotates it for the rest of the attack, while still shooting diamond bullets though at a slower rate.
• Periodically takes photos, rotating bullets from other enemies.

To spare Shuttah, the party will have to take the EasyPhoto, ToughPhoto, or PowerPhoto to initiate a special photo challenge in which the player must photograph the correct subject. EasyPhoto takes Ralsei's turn and increases time to take a picture. PowerPhoto costs 25% TP and uses Susie's turn. It gives a permanent mercy boost to all photos taken. A successful photo will bring the prompt to the next one. If a photo is failed once, the same prompt will be given again on the next attempt. If a photo is failed twice, the prompt will progress anyway.

The following challenges can appear both during the Island Board encounter and when Shuttah is encountered as a normal enemy:

• Multiple versions of Shuttah, three of which have bananas instead of mouths, will appear and Kris is tasked with photographing Shuttah's smile. Only one of the Shuttahs, whose mouth appears normal and is outlined in green will satisfy this condition.
• Lancer will appear and jump in the air before sticking out his tongue. For a successful photoshoot, Kris must photograph Lancer while his tongue is out.
• The screen is filled with many Ralsei lookalikes, with all but one having the face of a Pippins. To succeed, Kris has to photograph the Ralsei with a normal face.

A successful photoshoot is more effective, but a failure still provides points.

Using Spare when Shuttah is not yellow will increase Shuttah's mercy by 10%, in either encounter.

Island Board encounter

The Island Board encounter rotates between photoshoots in order. These challenges only appear during the Island Board encounter:

• The party must simply take a picture of any character on-screen. This can only appear once during Shuttah's first encounter, effectively serving as a tutorial for the camera mechanic.
• Kris must take a picture of Susie attacking a toilet exactly as the toilet explodes.
• If Shuttah's smile was successfully captured, it uses a harder variant of the attack next cycle. There are six Shuttahs that rotate quicker.
• Kris must take a picture of the whole party together. The party will move to the center of the screen and pose for the picture, and there are no obstacles to taking the photo. This only appears at the end of the battle, and a successful photo immediately ends the battle. Taking a picture with only Ralsei in frame awards the party 100 points.

Mercy is increased in several ways.

• A successful photo normally increases mercy by 10%. With PowerShoot, it increases by 20%.
• A failed photo normally increases mercy by 6%. With PowerShoot, it increases by 12%.
• A photo not taken does not increase mercy.

For the first encounter, sparing for 10% mercy is the fastest way to gain mercy, as S-Action and R-Action only give 5%, and a successful photo without PowerPhoto only gives 10% at best. However, in later encounters, it is more effective to use other methods.

Other encounters

Shuttah randomly chooses a photoshoot to use.

• A successful photo normally increases mercy by 80%. With PowerShoot, it increases by 100%.
• A failed photo normally increases mercy by 25%. With PowerShoot, it increases by 50%.
• A photo not taken does not increase mercy.

Trivia

An unused silhouette of Camenary

• Chapter 3's data indicate that a cut enemy named "Camenary" existed and was replaced by Shuttah later in development. All that remains of Camenary in Chapter 3's data is a variable name, a string of flavor text, and a leftover image of Camenary's silhouette.
• Shuttah's recruit description is a reference to the Nickelodeon cartoon Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, in which one of the main characters, Krumm, shares a very similar design to Shuttah - both have a large mouth, no head, and eyes located on their hands.
• In some unused battles, Shuttah can appear with Ribbick, Zapper and Shadowguy, and another Shuttah.
  • When paired with Ribbick, Shuttah cannot affect its attacks.
  • When paired with another Shuttah, the enemies will not attack.
• The text lines "When its eyes snap shut, memories are made in grey" and "Normally, my photos are all grey..." combined with the Island Board camera's behavior suggest that Shuttah takes black-and-white photos, although color photos appear during Shuttah's battle.
