Shelter
The shelter... it's...
A place for people to survive an emergency, right?
But, ever since I've moved here, it's been... closed for some reason.
It makes me wonder if... even if there was some disaster...
Whatever's inside there...
Might be worse...?
The shelter (JP: シェルター) is a mysterious location in Deltarune. The shelter is south of Hometown and is surrounded by the forest. The end of the area contains a dell that has a grassy overgrown mound of earth, which has a large red double door made of steel. The door appears rusty with clinging vines.
In Chapter 3, it is revealed that the shelter contains a Dark World, but the door has an electronic lock with three entry fields, each requiring a code. The entry fields each have a symbol beside them: a pine tree, a police badge, and a Delta Rune. As of Chapter 5, one code is fully known: "0915199X", found in Flower King, and one code is partially known: "122" (first three digits), found in Noelle's House.
In Chapter 1, after sealing the Eastern Fountain in Card Kingdom, Kris can explore the shelter's area. It is far south of the church and Town Hall. Kris walks on a long forest pathway. This path has the singing of birds reused from Undertale; as Kris approaches the shelter, the birdsong fades away.
Close to the doors, mus_smile can be heard at 15% speed.[1] This sound plays at normal speed when attempting to use the Cell Phone in a Dark World, and first appeared in room_gaster, one of Undertale's several inaccessible rooms.
Inspecting the door reveals it is locked.
In Chapter 2, Kris can explore this area with Susie after sealing the library Fountain.
Snowy and Monster Kid can be found in front of the shelter's entrance. The two converse about rumors Kris has been spreading about it, with Snowy mocking Monster Kid's fearfulness.[2] Kris and Susie overhear this, and in response, Susie sneaks up from behind them and violently kicks the locked door to scare Snowy and Monster Kid away. After the two flee, Susie asks Kris if they are okay, and wonders about the area. Susie decides to not push Kris to answer.[3]
Inspecting the door reveals it is still locked.
In Chapter 3's Green Room, Kris can enter the backstage, where they can play the Original Game without Tenna's modifications. At the end of the game, Kris obtains the Shelter Key, and the player, despite resistance, forces them to enter a replica of the shelter. Inside is a small dungeon that leads to a boss fight against the Shadow Mantle holder.

At the end of Chapter 3, Undyne gets kidnapped and taken into the shelter by the Knight. Susie pulls Kris and pursues the kidnapper. They arrive at the shelter door and notice the black smoke billowing before the door abruptly closes. Susie punches the right door in frustration and calls out to Undyne. After multiple punches, a metal panel falls off the door, revealing a digital lock system.
Susie acknowledges that the door cannot be broken, and that they cannot tell anyone due to the shelter having a Dark World. She reluctantly returns to the Dreemurr residence to seal its Dark Fountain. Kris stays behind and inspects the lock; the narration has no text sound. The lock consists of three entry fields and three symbols beside them: a pine tree, a police badge, and the Delta Rune. Kris steps away, and the left door opens slightly before the Chapter ends.
In Chapter 4, after church service, Susie tasks Kris with asking around for information about the codes to the shelter's lock. Alvin can be asked about the shelter, to which he will advise Kris to "look to the Angel for guidance".[4] If asked again, he advises Kris not to approach the shelter.[5] Alphys mentions that the shelter has always been closed since she moved into Hometown[6] and that she has only seen Undyne and Carol approach it,[7] while Noelle mentions that Carol always keeps important items at home,[8] prompting Kris and Susie to search Noelle's House in hopes of finding the codes.
Kris can visit the shelter before going to Noelle's House. Susie does not smile when visiting the area, and the description is the same as the end of Chapter 3. This inspection changes the narration slightly when inspecting the door for Catty's house.[9]
At Noelle's House, Kris finds one of the codes in Dess's guitar and reads out the first 3 digits: "122", but rips out their SOUL before the rest can be read. Susie eventually finds the guitar and sees the code, but is unable to write it down[10] before Kris alerts their mysterious caller and Carol arrives to kick Susie out of the house.
After leaving Noelle's House, Kris can inspect the shelter's door. Susie acknowledges that they know of one of the code's locations, though insists that they hurry.
Kris can inspect the shelter after sealing the church Fountains, where Susie comments that they are no closer to opening it, but that they "have to do something" about it tomorrow.[11]
The shelter is not accessible in Chapter 5. When speaking to Rudy in front of Town Hall, he alludes to Carol investigating something south of Hometown, which is implied to be at the shelter.
After sealing the Flower King Dark World, Kris finds a sheet of paper buried in the golden flower's soil, which has a code to the shelter written on it. They attempt to rip it into shreds to render the code unreadable, but Susie arrives and takes the paper before they can do so. The code is revealed to be "0915199X", a reference to Undertale's release date of September 15, 2015.
