Shortcut door

From Deltarune Wiki

... Where'd this door come from?
Dunno... come to think of it, I've never seen it before.

Jigsaw Joe, Chapter 1

Shortcut doors[1][2] are a type of recurring Dark World door in Deltarune. The party can use them to fast travel to previously-visited areas after reaching a later location in a Chapter. In some circumstances, the shortcut door is the only way to backtrack to certain areas.

Before being activated, the shortcut door appears as a simple, dark doorframe which the party cannot see through. After activation, it becomes a door with a flickering fire emanating from underneath it.

At the Forest shortcut door, Mr. Elegance claims that he and Mr. Society fixed the shortcut door for the party.

If the party interacted with Jigsaw Joe before reaching this shortcut door, he is also present and mentions he helped fix the door. If Kris talks to him again, he states he does not know where the door came from, and has "never seen it before". Mr. Elegance mentions that the three of them worked on it together, so they are confident the door will work. If the party did not interact with Jigsaw Joe, Mr. Elegance expresses concern that it might malfunction, because only the two of them worked on it.

If Kris talks to Mr. Elegance after escaping prison, he states that the "door'll go even further than before". Though, Mr. Elegance adds that he is "Not sure'n what we did to make it work like that, but..."

In this Chapter, the shortcut door is the only way to backtrack to these areas.

On the Weird Route, all of the Chapter 2 shortcut doors never activate, permanently remaining as empty doorframes.

Chapter 3

In the red carpet hall leading up into the Green Room, to the west of its entrance doors.

The requirement means that it is possible to activate the shortcut doors without entering the red carpet hall, if the player reaches the above cutscene and then backtracks to the Goulden Sam room.

Chapter 4

In the Dark Sanctuaries, shortcut doors are replaced with differently colored Guei flames, known as "warp flames" internally, that function similarly.[5] The colors correspond to where they warp to. Blue Flames only appear if a Game Over from a miniboss has occured, which instantly warps the party to the respective encounter.

Warp flames only appear after completing the 2nd Sanctuary. The warp flames are the only way to backtrack between all of these areas.

Chapter 5

Due to Flower Kingdom's larger size compared to previous Dark Worlds, it has a total of twelve shortcut doors rather than the usual three, separated into four regions with three doors each.

Trivia

  • The shortcut door's sprite is reused from Undertale. In Undertale, it was used as the door to Sans's room.
  • In Chapter 2, it is possible to perform a glitch where the empty Cyber Field doorframe brings up its activated textbox instead of its deactivated textbox, allowing the player to pick a warp destination. If the player picks Queen's Mansion, they will skip Cyber City entirely.[6]
    • Due to the coding of Chapter 2's shortcut doors, this will cause the Mansion's shortcut door to be disabled because no plot cutscene inside of the mansion has been viewed yet. Once the party reaches any plot cutscene, the shortcut door will become activated.
    • During the Deltarune: Chapter 2 Main Route event at Awesome Games Done Quick 2022, Toby Fox had donated $1997 to the stream, stating, "Here's 1997 KROMER so that we can see Spamton in DELTARUNE Chapter 2! .. What!? He's not in the run!?" This references that Spamton is never encountered in the run due to the skip.

Notes

  1. The shortcut doors are specifically coded to activate after any plot cutscene in Queen's Mansion, but only if the player is not on the Weird Route. Not counting glitches, the end of the first cutscene that counts is when Lancer opens the cages.
