Desert Board
Can you solve the puzzle of desert?
Tenna, Chapter 3
The Desert Board[1][2] (JP: 砂ばくのパーク Desert Park), also known as the Desert[3] (JP: 砂ばく) or the TV Desert[4] (JP: テレビ砂ばく), is the first half of TV Time's Round 1, and is the first board in the The Legend of Tenna minigame. It is a desert that has occasional water areas, cacti, breakable pots, and Sphinx-Tenna. The party must find at least three keys and the Mooncloud Stone to enter the northern pyramid and begin the Cooking Show.
- Key ×4 (without a Chapter 3 Completion FILE), ×5 (with a Chapter 3 Completion FILE)
- Q ×2
- Lancer ×1
- Mooncloud Stone ×1
In the first round of TV Time, Tenna gives the party to play a minigame called The Legend of Tenna. The first board in this game is the Desert Board, where the party has to find three out of four (or five) keys, as well as the Mooncloud Stone, to finish the game.
The four keys are described by a Pippins NPC near the start of the game:
- The key for "rich people" can be found in Tenna's shop within the pyramid itself, where it costs 250 POINTs.
- The key for "cactus" can be found underneath a cactus.
- The key for "treasure hunters" can be obtained by freeing Lancer, then using him on the "L" labelled hole to dig out the key. The prerequisite to this is either obtaining the Power Croissant or the Mooncloud Stone.
- The prerequisite for the following keys is obtaining a Power Croissant.
- The key for "know-it-alls" can be found after battling two quiz vortexes, giving the two obtained Q's to Sphinx-Tenna, solving its puzzle, then destroying pots to obtain the key.
- If Chapter 3 has already been completed once, the bomb field room unlocks, letting the party obtain the fifth key.
The Mooncloud Stone can be found by battling Lanino and Elnina. After either drinking 9 times from the oasis, or letting Lancer dig out the key for "treasure hunters", the oasis dries up, and the two can be battled. They ultimately break up during the battle.
After the party brings the keys and the Mooncloud Stone to the pyramid, they play the Cooking Show minigame. When the credits start rolling, Tenna interrupts them and explains how this was only the first round. After a word from sponsors, the party is teleported to the Green Room.
At the entrance to the pyramid, the party can talk to Tenna and visit his shop. The shop is selling a pyramid key for 250 POINTs, and TV Dinner starting at 10 POINTs. The party can leave and re-enter Tenna's shop to buy TV Dinners. If the party has 10 POINTs or fewer, the TV Dinner costs 10 POINTs. Otherwise, it gradually increases in cost, initially costing 20 POINTs, 50, 100, and finally 200.
If Susie has the Power Croissant and the key has not been bought, she automatically picks up the key. However, this causes Tenna to refer to the party as a "THIEF". Upon reentering the shop, Susie leaves after Tenna greets the party as "THIEF". This is reminiscent of Link's Awakening, where Link can run out of the main shop in Mabe Village with an item without paying, but his name is permanently changed to THIEF for the rest of the game.
The entrance to the pyramid is locked by three keys and a Mooncloud Stone. Tenna stands next to the pyramid, explaining to the party what they have to do to unlock the pyramid.
Directly south of the pyramid stands an area with several pots blocking the path to the east and several trees and pots blocking the path to a key. A Pippins in the area explains the locations of four keys to the party.[5] Further south, the party finds Lanino and Elnina next to an oasis. The party can drink from the oasis to regenerate health.
After Lancer fills the oasis, it can no longer be drank from. When entering the room when the oasis is filled, Lanino and Elnina get mad, forcing the party to battle them and rewarding the Mooncloud Stone.
Alternatively, after drinking 9 times from the oasis, the oasis will also dry up, inciting the fight in the same way. By drinking the oasis entirely, the map changes to lack all water and all the trees die because of it. This means the player is able to obtain Lancer and the Mooncloud Stone without the Power Croissant, although this sequence breaking offers no other benefit.
East of the oasis, there is an area with a quiz vortex. Its questions are:
| Question | Answers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WHAT TIME IS IT RIGHT NOW? | TV-THIRTY! | Correct answer |

| JAM | Wrong answer |
It drops a Q that the party can bring to Sphinx-Tenna. In the same area, there is a Pippins NPC which tells the party there is a key hidden underneath the cactus.

North of the eastern quiz vortex is Sphinx-Tenna, who is looking for its two missing Q's. If Susie has the Power Croissant, and the player does not own both Q's yet when they speak to Sphinx-Tenna, she will toss a pot at it, injuring the sphinx and upsetting real Tenna.
Sphinx-Tenna, after receiving two Q's, triggers yet another quiz.

HEAD | The correct answer matches the part that was swapped or is a fake.
Susie hovers over the same choice as the player, and will select it if the timer runs out. If the machine in the picture has all Duck or fake parts (regardless of the original machine), Ralsei will select "SEEMS FINE" if the timer runs out. If the original machine has all Duck parts, but one of those parts was swapped by something else, Ralsei will select the correct answer if the timer runs out. If the original machine does not have all Duck parts, and neither does the machine in the picture, Ralsei will select "HEAD" if the timer runs out. |

Sphinx-Tenna opens a passage to the key in the pot area, assuming the party obtained the Power Croissant.
West of the oasis, the party finds an encounter with two Shadowguys. If the party backs away to the previous room while Tenna is talking, he comments how the party is "absolutely spineless". Susie receives a yogurt when the party finishes the battle. The other exits to the room are blocked by trees until the battle is completed.
The Pippins NPC in this room explains how the party has to reach the amount of TP indicated by a star to reach the S-rank.
South of the Shadowguy area, there is a simple block puzzle where the party has to push a blue block in a circle to open the path to the east. Tenna measures how long the party took to solve the puzzle, and comments on it afterwards. If Kris does not push the block, Susie throws the yogurt she obtained in the previous area at them, and Ralsei solves the block puzzle on his own (Kris cannot move while Ralsei is solving the puzzle). If Kris pushes the block and then idles, this will not occur and the game will wait indefinitely.

South of the Power Croissant area, there is another block puzzle, this time with two blocks. Kris can move one of the blocks to the right spot, but the other block gets stuck in the corner and cannot be moved. Ralsei then reveals that his special ability is to turn into a block, and allows Kris to push him to the left spot. Meanwhile, Tenna displays a "Pushing Buddies" sign. If Kris does not push Ralsei towards the puzzle, a laugh can be heard from the audience and Tenna starts a commercial break that shows the Ralsei plush from Fangamer with the text "WHY DIDN'T YOU PUSH HIM?" Alternatively, if Kris keeps pushing Ralsei without solving the puzzle, Ralsei questions why he is being pushed so much.
After solving the puzzle, the paths to the south and east open. After returning, three Shadowguys await the party in this room. To the south there is a room with 18 POINTs on the ground. Susie collects one or two, then complains how all the points on the ground give +1 POINT.
Between the Power Croissant room and the first block puzzle room, there is a segment with falling rocks that the party must avoid. If Susie obtained the Power Croissant, she picks up Ralsei and uses him as her shield.
After the falling rocks area, and directly south of the quiz area is the Power Croissant item. If Kris attempts to retrieve it first, Susie bumps into them and still gains the Power Croissant.

With it, Susie gains the ability to throw pots and pull out weeds for 5 POINTs each. This allows her to destroy the pots in the pot area and assist in the giant cactus area. Upon acquiring, Susie proceeds to throw all the pots in the area, then Ralsei into the water, and chases him around the water. If the Oasis had been drained beforehand, the pool of water is instead a quicksand pit, and Tenna and Ralsei's dialogue changes to accommodate.
After obtaining this item, Susie automatically starts destroying all pots in the room and digging out POINTs in certain rooms. This can be used to farm an unlimited amount of POINTs on this board.
North of the Shadowguy area, Lancer is stuck on a cactus across a river. Kris can stand on a red switch to spawn pots in the room. If Susie does not have the Power Croissant yet, she does not do anything. If Susie has the Power Croissant, she looks at the pots and decides to throw Ralsei instead. The party then obtains Lancer, and can use it to dig out holes labeled with "L" and the spade sign.
Alternatively, if all the water was drank from the oasis, Kris can simply walk across the dry riverbed and obtain Lancer without the Power Croissant.

West of the Shadowguy area, there is a Pippins NPC who comments on how a secret stone is hidden in the water. There is a lancer-shaped hole with an L in the room. After putting Lancer on the hole, he clogs the water with rocks and digs out a pyramid key. This exhausts all water in the oasis, and lets the party battle Lanino and Elnina in the oasis area.
South of the block puzzle, there are two rooms with cacti next to each other. Touching any cactus reduces Kris's HP. First room contains another quiz vortex, which activates a quiz with the following questions:
| Question | Answers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS SHOW'S HOST? | MR. TV GUY |
|
| MR. LIL' NOSE | Wrong answer | |
| MR. TENNA |
| |
| MR. EMAIL | Wrong answer | |
| WHAT IS THE HIGHLY MEMORABLE HEADING OF "TV TIME?" | DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL! | Wrong answer |
| MARVELOUS MYSTERY BOARD | Correct answer | |
| MAGICAL MYSTERY BOARD |
| |
| DON'T LICK THE SCREEN! |
| |
| WHAT'S THE NAME OF THIS KID? SERIOUSLY I DON'T REMEMBER.
[A picture of Lancer is displayed.] |
LANCER |
|
| DANCER | Correct if chosen by majority | |
| PRANCER | Correct if chosen by majority | |
| MR. GENEROSITY | Correct if chosen by majority |
For the last question, "Lancer" looks like the correct answer, but if the majority of the players choose a different answer, Tenna will mark it as correct. If Susie chooses "Lancer" while Kris and Ralsei choose something different, a special cutscene plays where Susie says everyone else is wrong, with Tenna responding "majority rules" and marking Susie's answer as incorrect.
In the room east of this one, the cactus in the center of the room blushes when Kris comes close to it. As the Pippins NPC in an earlier area suggested, Kris can interact with the Cactus to uncover a pyramid key underneath it.
South of the cacti area there are four tiny pyramids, with the bottom-left one hiding an entrance to the Secret Mailroom. The Secret Mailroom passage appears, and after the party enters it once they can never enter it again. After proceeding to the mailroom, it turns out that there is no fan mail, and Tenna cuts the room from the game.
If Chapter 3 has been completed at least once (i.e. there is a Chapter 3 Completion FILE), the game opens a passage to the west of the area with the Secret Mailroom entrance. If Susie has the Power Croissant, she starts digging on the field. The room closes behind the party, and Susie starts throwing bombs that she dug out, until she digs out the last weed which contains the fifth pyramid key.
After entering the pyramid, the party encounters a small pyramid which linearly leads to the cooking physical challenge.
It is possible for the party to find a third "smaller pyramid" in a hidden path, alongside Rouxls Kaard, by idling in front of the small pyramid. This easter egg offers no real benefit.

- A scrapped version of Tenna's preview screen of the Desert Board
- Concept art of the Desert Board by Gigi D.G.
- The alternative quicksand pit scene is likely a reference to a quicksand class lecture that Toby Fox attended in 2014, wherein the PowerPoint presentation used an image of Sakuya Izayoi of Touhou fame. This is reinforced by Tenna's quip about "the class" as well as Ralsei's dialogue ("Won't someone please help me?") being lifted directly from the slide in question.
- The preview screen's sprite is a retouched version of a stock photo of the Giza pyramid complex, taken by photographer Alex Anton.[6] The pyramid of Khafre is the main subject of the preview.
