Lanino and Elnina
Here's a little romantic forecast for you...
The weather...
... always sticks together.Lanino and Elnina, Chapter 3
Lanino (JP: ラニーノ) and Elnina (JP: エルニーナ) are two weather-themed Darkners, appearing in Chapter 3 of Deltarune. They work for Tenna, appearing multiple times throughout TV World and being the first miniboss fight in the Chapter.
Lanino and Elnina both have cloud-like white hair, wear dark blue glasses and wield staffs. Lanino has a crescent moon-shaped head (which is usually depicted in profile) and yellow skin, and wears a dark blue suit, pants and shoes, and red gloves. Elnina has light blue skin and wears a white shirt with red on the borders, a dark blue and yellow skirt resembling an umbrella, and yellow rainboots.
Lanino and Elnina appear to love each other very much, and are said to have an unbreakable bond. They often use weather-related words to describe things, especially during battle. They can be a bit self-absorbed at times, as evidenced by how they act overly prideful and cocky when Kris chooses their attack after one of them asks whose attack they prefer between Lanino's and Elnina's. Jealousy causes them to break up during their battle, however, later encounters show they miss each other very much. Eventually, they reconcile and reunite once again.
As shown by their temporary relationship with Rouxls Kaard and (possible) later relationship with Starwalker, Lanino and Elnina are capable of open relationships and could be considered polyamorous. Although their relationship with Rouxls ends poorly, it is implied they both have feelings for him, even though they initiate the relationship to be with each other.
At the Cafe in Castle Town, Lanino is shown to mistake Elnina with a Mizzle or Miss Mizzle, if paired with them.
"Lanino" and "Elnina" are derived from El Niño (Spanish for "The Boy") and La Niña (Spanish for "The Girl"), the terms for the warming and cooling phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation global climate phenomenon. The gendered definite articles used are swapped in their names, as el is masculine and la is feminine. Additionally, the Spanish letter "ñ" is replaced with the similar "n", as the letter is not part of the English language, incidentally causing their names to resemble the given names "Nino" and "Nina".

In Chapter 3, Lanino and Elnina introduce themselves in the pre-show area, telling the party that they are going to be their boss encounter. They are properly encountered in the Desert Board of The Legend of Tenna, where their in-game counterparts stand next to the oasis. After the oasis has been dried up, Lanino and Elnina draw the party into a fight.
During the battle, Tenna introduces Lanino and Elnina as a "professional power couple". However, perceived favoritism allows the party to exploit the couple's pride and jealousy to drive a wedge between them. When prompted, Kris has the ability to tell one partner that they prefer their attacks, inflating their ego and causing them to disregard their lover. This makes the partner who was not picked react with jealousy and hurt, and results in them breaking up with their lover and leaving the battle after a few turns. The favored partner eventually realizes that their actions drove their lover away, making them regretful, after which Tenna ends the battle early.
After the fight, the couple reappears during the first physical challenge, the Cooking Show, as "SPECIAL GUESTS" who give extra points when fed. Both of them run across the screen individually while crying.
After completing the first board, the couple can be found in the Green Room in separate locations. Despite the breakup and their attempts to seem unbothered, both of them deeply miss each other and burst into tears when thinking about their ex-lover. Both of them can be told "You're strong and independent" or "Your forecast is love", with either option reassuring them.
During the Island Board, the party must reunite the couple at Lover's Peak to progress. After getting Lanino and Elnina to agree to meet, it is revealed that one of them already started a relationship with Rouxls Kaard, who then proposes a three-way relationship between the two weather Darkners and himself. After the game, Lanino and Elnina are seen playing a video game on the right couch of the Green Room together with Rouxls Kaard, clearly having come to dislike him and only keeping up the facade of enjoying his company for the other.[5]

Later, the couple is seen on the set of the cooking show together with Rouxls Kaard, who is getting snacks. He also explains his "Rouxls Kaard Relationshipe Systeme" to the party, which is complicated and seems to confuse the couple. After Rouxls realizes that dating Lanino and Elnina did not make him second-in-command to Tenna, he ends up challenging the party to a battle, commanding Lanino's and Elnina's attacks via laser pointer throughout. After the party recruits the couple to their side with Lancer's help, they conjointly break up with Rouxls Kaard, and optionally replace him with Starwalker (if he has been found during Chapter 1).
Lanino and Elnina are seen for a final time in Chapter 3 while they quit their contracts with Tenna, leaving him alone and frustrated.
In Chapter 4, Elnina and Lanino can be battled in the Party Dojo. Winning this battle rewards an ExecBuffet. They can also be found in Tenna's room at Ralsei's castle, where they both comment on the lamp in the room, not knowing it is actually Rouxls Kaard in disguise.

Lanino and Elnina were designed by Nelnal.[6]
Lanino and Elnina's designs were first revealed during Spamton Sweepstakes. A link to the Green Room page, deltarune.com/ramb/, was shown on the product page for "SHIRTWEAR 1.04s SPAMTON UPDATE PATCH". On the left side of the Green Room page there is a door with a link to deltarune.com/weather/, a page which shows Lanino and Elnina. When clicked, it shows YTMND-styled text "THE WEATHER ALWAYS STICKS TOGETHER" with Lanino and Elnina brandishing their staffs in the background, while Vapor Buster plays.
In ISSUE 5 - Winter 2024 of the Newsletter, on Valentine's Day, three cards were randomly sent to each subscriber. One of the cards was a card between Lanino and Elnina, which was the first time their names have been revealed. Later on, in ISSUE 6 - Summer 2024, Toby Fox posted a series of quests required to finish Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4, in which a bit of localization showed Elnina's recruit strings.

An unused section of Chapter 3 would have featured Elnina as a playable character in a The Legend of Tenna section, in which she has the ability to turn quicksand into water by crying. This was originally planned to occur after the battle against Rouxls Kaard in the unused backstage area, where Elnina would give the party her controller, allowing them to play as her pixelated avatar in TV World's video game puzzles.[7]
The first concept art of Elnina shows her with the name "Lanina", indicating that it was likely her preliminary name, and reinforcing the idea that La Niña served as the etymological basis for both "Lanino" and, initially, for her as well.
At first, the duo attacks the party from left and right sides of the bullet board. Lanino attacks with either sun or moon bullets, and Elnina attacks with either droplet or crystal bullets. The bullets move in from the sides and meet in the center, turning into hearts and continuing along their trajectory. Before each attack there is a "forecast" displaying temperature and the weather corresponding to the types of bullets about to be used.
On the turn the party gets asked which attack they preferred, the hearts no longer appear on collision; the bullets destroy each other when they meet.
After that, the forecasts then shift during the following turns to match the member of the duo whose attack was selected; increasing in temperature for Lanino, decreasing for Elnina. The weather icon matching them also gradually increases in size. During the next attack the moon or cloud matching the selected duo member moves around and creates more, larger, bullets, whereas the unselected member's are smaller and create smaller, fewer, bullets. The bullets no longer collide with each other.
Following this, the next two attacks have the selected member's moon or cloud, chasing the unselected member's bullets around the perimeter of the board while both are creating bullets. When the bullets collide they destroy each other.
After the second version of this attack, the unselected member declares that their relationship is through and leaves. The forecast switches to either 999 or -999, with the selected member's weather icon taking over the entire section of it. Following this the member uses their final attack, where the moon or cloud creates large bullets on both sides of the bullet board. This attack gradually decreases in intensity with the bullets getting less frequent and smaller as they realize they drove their partner away, leading to Tenna ending the battle.

On the third turn, if any party member uses one of the "ILoveTV" ACTs or either enemy's HP drops below 70%, during the next attack optional dialogue may occur if Kris used ACTs more with one member than the other. After that turn's attack, whichever member has been ACTed with more (Elnina if balanced or if no ACTs have been used) asks the party which attack they preferred. This choice changes the attacks and dialogue going forward as the chosen member's attacks get stronger while the other leaves, but the attacks are only different visually and are dodged in the same way.
4 turns after that, the battle ends automatically, with Tenna rapidly saying ILoveTV enough times to hit 99.
The party needs to use either the ILoveTV or ILoveTVX ACT at least once in the first three turns to progress the fight. Lanino and Elnina cannot be defeated through violence, as the battle ends before a sufficient amount of damage can be dealt.[8]
For most of the fight, the duo uses a similar attack to the first few turns in the Desert Board, with a large cloud and moon creating bullets, differing in that they both create one type of bullet (indicated by the forecast in the menu beforehand). These bullets can be blocked with an item gained by using one of Kris's ACTs, increasing mercy in the process. The cloud and moon may also create red fire bullets which reset the mercy gained during the attack to 0 if it hits the item.
At the end of the fight (at 90% MERCY) Lanino and Elnina use an attack reminiscent of the Bounce the Ball minigame in Tenna's battle. A number appears below the bullet board, and the SOUL has an umbrella above it. A yellow cloud ball appears, which creates an arc of lightning bullets when it touches the bottom of the board. The SOUL can bounce the ball with the umbrella, which decreases the number. The first time this attack is used, the number is 20. When it reaches 9, a bounceable moon ball appears. The moon does nothing when it hits the bottom, but deals damage if it touches the SOUL. When the number hits 0, the attack ends.
The turn after, the attack gets used again, but the counter is 60. The moon appears at 55. At 35, a lampshade appears, acting identically to the moon.

Telescope
Blocks bullets
Can only be selected when targeting Lanino. A telescope is placed on top of the SOUL for the entire turn. Blocking a moon bullet will increase mercy of both enemies by 2%, every other type of bullet will increase mercy by 1% instead. Blocking a red bullet will lower the mercy accumulated during the turn to 0%.
Sunglasses
Blocks bullets
Can only be selected when targeting Lanino. Sunglasses are placed on top of the SOUL for the entire turn. Blocking a sun bullet will increase mercy of both enemies by 2%, every other type of bullet will increase mercy by 1% instead. Blocking a red bullet will lower the mercy accumulated during the turn to 0%.
Umbrella
Blocks bullets
Can only be selected when targeting Elnina. A umbrella is placed on top of the SOUL for the entire turn. Blocking a raindrop bullet will increase mercy of both enemies by 2%, every other type of bullet will increase mercy by 1% instead. Blocking a red bullet will lower the mercy accumulated during the turn to 0%.
WarmHat
Blocks bullets
Can only be selected when targeting Elnina. A umbrella is placed on top of the SOUL for the entire turn. Blocking a crystal bullet will increase mercy of both enemies by 2%, every other type of bullet will increase mercy by 1% instead. Blocking a red bullet will lower the mercy accumulated during the turn to 0%.
S-Action
Increases the mercy of both enemies by 8%.
R-Action
Increases the mercy of both enemies by 8%.
- Kris's ACTs spawn an item to block the bullets and add to the MERCY percentage. If the attack matches the ACT used (Sunglasses for sun, Telescope for moons, Umbrella for drops, and WarmHat for crystals), additional MERCY is gained.
- S-Action and R-Action grant 8% MERCY (to both).
When MERCY reaches 90%, the final two attacks occur, then the battle ends. These turns cannot be skipped, as MERCY stops increasing after 90% except after each of the last two attacks, where it increases by 5%. There are also no useful ACTs.
Some attacks in this battle are Dark/Star element, so the Shadow Mantle can greatly reduce damage taken.[9]
Alternatively, Lanino and Elnina can be defeated through violence, and the battle ends when the HP of either of them is depleted. Unlike winning the battle through MERCY, the final two attacks do not occur. Like all encounters in Party Dojo, there are no consequences to using violence, and the reward is exactly the same.

We actually created the third board! But we tried making it short because the game was dragging on with no typical DR gameplay. Because of that, we also added an overworld area in between each "half" of Board 3, the backstage area. It was made of wood and heavily featured sneaking mechanic. This is also where you originally fought Rouxls Kaard. After defeating him, you would get a controller that allows you to play in the Board as Elnina. She could cry up a storm, allowing you to access the key card that would allow you to skip the rest of Board 3...
