Pippins
Life is a numbers game... You ever heard that?
Pippins, Chapter 3
Pippins (JP: ピピンズ) (plural Pippins[4] or Pippinses[5]) is a diamond-shaped Darkner enemy based on dice.[6] Their names are not mentioned in-game until Chapter 3, though they appear as a cameo in Chapter 1, one appears as an NPC in Chapter 2, and definitions related to them existed in the source code as early as Chapter 1.[7]
Several Pippins in TV World sell items, some for D$ and some for POINTs. Their wares are:
| Item | Price | Location |
|---|---|---|
| TV Dinner | 250 D$ | Before the Show |
| TV Dinner | 300 D$ | Goulden Sam |
| 3 TV Dinners | 800 D$ | Goulden Sam |
| Counterfeit S-rank | 1500 POINTs | Red carpet hall |
In the Island Board, a Pippins sells Lancer for 999 POINTs, which can be reduced to 99 or 9 POINTs by taking a photo of the price with the camera:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Lancer | 999/99/9 POINTs |
Another Pippins on the Island Board sells a scam key, and a TV Dinner:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Key | 100 POINTs |
| TV Dinner | 400 POINTs, free if the key is bought |
Pippins resembles a small humanoid creature. It has a white, hexagonal head with a pair of eyes with red pupils - though its right eye is often closed - and a wide mouth upon it. Its body consists of a single diamond shape, and it typically wears a suit with a red overcoat, black main shirt, and a white collar with red tie. Its hands are made of 3 pointy fingers, and are fully covered by its suit along with the arms. It also wears black pants which cover its legs.
Under certain circumstances, Pippins's head is shown to resemble a regular six-sided die with no visible facial features. This can be seen upon using the Sharpshoot ACT, when Pippins is attacked, or during a cutscene where Tenna threatens to withhold his employees' salaries until they capture the party.
Pippins is a luck-loving Darkner that enjoys gambling. It loves money, instantly becoming spared if bribed during battle, and multiple of them scam their customers for either POINTs or Dark Dollars. Multiple of them are seen stealing POINTs from chests, and other prizes, in Tenna's Bonus Zone.
Its tendency to frequently disregard rules earns it the ire of both Zappers and Tenna.
"Pippins" is derived from "pip", the markings on a die.

Various Pippins are part of the crowd that assists Lancer in overthrowing King. This only occurs if the party is on the pacifist route.
In Chapter 2, a Pippins appears in the Party Dojo in Castle Town and remarks that "fighting wasn't in the cards for [them]", but it mentions how the party should "hope they don't meet [its] friends", foreshadowing Pippins's appearance as an enemy in Chapter 3. Recruiting Werewerewire makes it replace the Pippins in the dojo.
The first Pippins met in Tenna's TV World sells TV Dinners for 250 Dark Dollars, giving the misleading statement that Dark Dollars are a non-viable currency.

On the Desert Board, several Pippins give hints on how to obtain keys. Similarly for the Island Board after obtaining the camera, four Pippins are to the left of Kodakoda Shrine, where they give hints on how to obtain the Grand Photos. When a Grand Photo is taken by the party, the Pippins hinting towards that photo disappears from the room. A couple of Pippins merchants sell items to the party, with one selling a Lancer marked at 999 POINTs, and another one running a scam where it sells a key that cannot be used on the Island Board. Two other Pippins merchants hand out free Ribbons and a Pizza Deodorant (For Nerds).
In the Green Room, a Pippins plays a video game together with Elnina but flees when the latter starts crying. A sunglasses-wearing Pippins in the A-rank room sells the right to play Monster Movie for 500 POINTs. A Pippins in the S-rank changing room offers to give advice on how to get more damage when using Rude Buster for 1 POINT. However, it provides said advice for free if Kris refuses or has no POINTs.
If the player earns either an A, B, or C-rank, a sunglasses-wearing Pippins in the red carpet hall sells the ability to unlock a counterfeit S-rank for 1500 POINTs, which resembles a Cool S. This Pippins does not appear if the player has a T or S-rank, and refuses to sell them a counterfeit S-rank if they have a Z-rank. After Round 2, this Pippins also does not appear (regardless of Round 2 rank) unless the player had either a real or a counterfeit S-rank (not a Z-rank) from Round 1,[8] which partially prevents the player from wasting 1500 POINTs without the Ice Key.

A Pippins in the red carpet hall of the Green Room is good friends with a Zapper, feeling grateful that the Zapper supported him when he mistakenly broke the rules.[9] After the completion of the Island Board, the Zapper worries that his Pippins friend might turn to stone due to the Pippins originating from Card Castle,[5] but the Pippins feels unconcerned with the potential risk, confident that he fits in with the Dark World.[10] If spoken to again, he seems to hint at the TripTicket's existence.[11] After the end of Round 3 of TV Time, the Zapper turns to stone, likely due to being stolen from the Cattenheimer household, while the Pippins remains unaffected. The Pippins worries for his Zapper friend and urges Kris to seal the Dreemurr residence Fountain.[12]
After escaping from Tenna in Round 3 of TV Time, the Pippins who got caught smuggling TV Dinners for Dark Dollars can be found in jail, now selling the product at a higher price, with a new option to buy 3 TV Dinners. A mixture of Pippins and Shadowguys dance together in the Cooking Show room, totaling at 60 (30 if not all enemies have been recruited yet),[13] though they cannot be spoken to. Defeating any Pippins via FIGHTing results in all of them being absent. They are also found raiding Tenna's chests in the Bonus Zone.

If the Original Game's Desert Board and Island Board have not been completed by the start of Round 3 of TV Time, Ramb is found behind his counter in the Green Room, completely turned to stone. Inspecting Ramb causes a cup-holding Pippins to pop out from behind the counter, telling Kris not to bother with Ramb since he is petrified. Further prompting has the Pippins criticize Ramb's past behavior, reflecting on how Ramb was unable to conform to TV World like the Pippins did.
The same Pippins from Chapter 2 replaces Werewerewire in the Party Dojo if Werewerewire was recruited. Upon interaction, this Pippins talks about how the party battled Pippins in TV World. If the party recruited Pippins, this Pippins says that the other Pippins are "actually losers", and admits that it hyped them up too much. If the party defeated enemy Pippins violently, this Pippins instead expresses that it does not want to fight the party in the Dojo.

In addition, a Green Pippins appears in Mike's room, serving as one of the three Mike imposters along with a Shadowguy and a Zapper. After being uncovered by Kris and their party, Green Pippins goes on a tirade questioning who Mike is, if he even exists at all.
A Pippins to the west of Castle Town can be seen trying to scam the Hacker using a child's game. However, the Hacker's controller keeps malfunctioning, making the Pippins wonder if the Hacker knows about being scammed and is playing around it.
Another Pippins appears inside of the TV Studio, where they can be asked information about the Rock Video minigame.
The same Pippins inside the TV Studio from Chapter 4 reappears in the same location.
The Green Pippins is found once again in Mike's Room, where he is still pretending to be Mike, even if Tenna is not present in the Dark World anymore.
Another Pippins appears in TV Studio, claiming that a "special colored Pippins" will pat Kris on the head if they can complete the song 4rd Sanctuary without missing a note.[14] After completing all the requirements, the Pippins will reveal that it actually was not true.[15]
Yet another Pippins appears at the entrance of Ralsei's castle, hosting a "race of familiars".
Pippins was originally intended to be an enemy in Chapter 1. In the Undertale 6th anniversary stream, Toby Fox mentioned that these characters are dice enemies. He had created attack patterns for them, but he did not find them fun to dodge, so he initially scrapped them.[6]
The enemy definition for Pippins existed in the game's code as early as Chapter 1, containing Pippins's stats and early ACTs. These are slightly different from the Pippins used in Chapter 3, with lower stats (170 HP, 8 AT, 0 DF) and a lower D$ reward (50 D$), and with an "X-Bet" ACT instead of the final "Cheat".[7] There also exists an object related to Pippins's attacks, obj_dicebul, which had all of its code blanked out.[16] The object that would actually be used for Pippins's dice bullets in Chapter 3 is instead called obj_bullet_dice.
- Other Pippins
- Shadowguy and Pippins
- Rudinn Ranger (unused[17])
- Ribbick (unused[18])
Pippins has only a single attack, which has a few variants.
- Dice Attack: Pippins launches a variable amount of 4 sided dice into the bullet board. Per additional Pippins, the amount of dice rolled increases by 1, starting with 2 dice with a single Pippins, leading to a maximum of 4 dice in the triple Pippins encounter. The number which is first rolled (and thus what it lands on) is seemingly random. The die face determines the attack launched after the die lands:
- A 1 launches a lone circular bullet aimed at the SOUL's last position.
- A 2 launches 2 small explosions which ripple out at 180 degree angles facing the pips directions, creating a straight line.
- A 3 launches 3 medium explosions which ripple out at 120 degree angles facing the pips directions, creating a crosshair shape.
- A 4 launches 4 large explosions which ripple out at 90 degree angles, creating a plus sign / 'X' shape. This pattern explodes in the direction of the die's corners, and not the pips.
Bet
Touch Green 4 Mercy
Cheat
TIRE Enemies, but...
Inflicts TIRED on all enemies. During Pippins's next turn, every dice rolls a 4. 1 less die gets rolled than is standard for the variant of the attack being used. This effect only lasts for one turn. Repeated uses of this ACT have no effect, with Susie drawing fake eyes on Kris and a mustache on Ralsei instead.
Bribe
Give 150 POINTs to SPARE
Instantly spares the targeted Pippins at the cost of 150 POINTs.
S-Action
Increases MERCY by 50%.
R-Action
Increases MERCY by 50%.
- The most efficient way of sparing Pippins without relying on any in battle events, TP costs, or POINT expenditures is sparing with Kris, then using both S/R-Action immediately. Notably, Pippinses' attacks become easier the less of them there are, as 1 less die appears per Pippins, without any other modifier to their attacks. Because of this, SPARE + R-Action + S-Action is not only efficient, but reduces the risk of being hit on subsequent turns.
- When used in a battle against 2 or more Pippins, Bet can get a Pippins to 100% MERCY whilst also removing all dice from play, allowing one to avoid needing to dodge. Bet cannot be chained into a SPARE on the same turn due to accruing MERCY during the enemy's turn. Holding off on sparing a Pippins at full MERCY with 2 in combat allows for Bet to potentially gain 100% MERCY on the second Pippins as well due to the extra dice. The closer the starting number on a thrown die is to 4, the faster it turns green. Therefore, to grab green 4s, the SOUL should move immediately towards a 3, wait a bit for a 2, and wait for a bounce on a 1.
- An initially launched 4 never becomes a 4 in the box, meaning it is possible to get unlucky and be unable to collect 1 or more of the dice, making Bet fairly inconsistent.
- Cheat sets up use of Pacify by making Pippins TIRED, which prevents a Turn 1 SPARE due to Pacify's TP cost. However, it also lowers the amount of dice thrown, and makes only 4s appear, allowing massive TP generation fairly safely if between one of a 4 explosion's right angles. This makes it a decent choice if one can pull off the graze for the boards, due to TP affecting the battle's overall score (and preventing the need for DEFEND spam on other turns) but is not especially noteworthy otherwise, even if it can chain into a Pacify from turn 2 onwards.
- Bribe immediately spares a Pippins but at a fairly hefty price of 150 POINTs (the equivalent of 600 Dark Dollars when exchanging D$ for POINTs at the best rate). While it sounds strong, a SPARE per turn is already achievable without the use of POINTs, and Susie's action is not especially valuable alone and any use of it does not decrease the turn count compared to other fast strategies.
- The Sharpshoot ACT from Shadowguys can be used on Pippins to reduced effect. With good aim, its possible to bring both a Shadowguy and a Pippins to 100% MERCY. This is fairly difficult and relies on an encounter with a Shadowguy, however.
- Premature SPARING increases MERCY by 10%.
- Dodging Pippins's attacks depends heavily on the number rolled. The number on the die when it is first launched by the Pippins increments by either 2 or 3, (wrapping around when incrementing past 4) until it settles in the bullet board and launches the attack. This means that dice that start on high numbers when initially launched are less threatening once they explode, and vice versa. 2s and 3s explode in the direction of their pips (a vertical set of 2 pips shoots vertically etc.), while 4s explode in the direction of their die corners (causing a square 4 pips to shoot diagonally, and a rhombus shaped 4 pips to shoot horizontally and vertically).
- A method to dodge the dice as they initially fall is to linger at slightly above the center of the bullet board and make small horizontal adjustments; the bouncing dice are likely not to reach high enough to hit the SOUL whilst the height still gives room to dodge the dice as they fall. If a 2, 3 or 4 lands, the SOUL can get beside them in such a way to narrowly dodge the closest explosion wave (moving slightly to the right of a vertical 2, for instance) to generate lots of TP, as the consecutive explosions can net very high amounts. If a 1 lands, slight movements in any direction can be used to avoid it, adjusted slightly if another die's explosions happen to cross the safe spot beside the die the SOUL is next to.

- Two of Pippins's quotes that appear when using the Cheat ACT are references to the dice-based games Boggle and Yahtzee.
- One of its neutral flavor texts indirectly references the dice-based board game Monopoly, in its mention of green houses and mortgaging.
- Pippins's neutral flavor text, "Pippins scratches off tickets made of toilet paper", references a scene in Shyren's battle in Undertale, where Sans doles out tickets on toilet paper for her impromptu concert.
- Another neutral flavor text, spoken by Tenna, "Hey you! Stop selling tickets made of toilet paper!", also references this.
- Another one of Pippins's neutral flavor texts references the strict regulations on depictions of gambling in media. Media which includes gambling, particularly in playable form, is often given higher age ratings even if there is no graphic or violent content, which is why Pippins's presence passively increases the age rating.
- More specifically, the flavor text may reference the Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S version of Undertale, which had its age rating changed to T from its usual rating of E10+. This was pointed out by Toby Fox on Twitter directly to be a result of the addition of a slot machine.[20]
- One of Pippins's neutral quotes references Jevil's explanation of his "numbers game" before his battle.
- Despite not being an enemy that can be encountered in Chapter 4, Pippins's attack decreases from 11 to 8, and Dark Dollars after battle from 90 to 30. The Bribe ACT is also not present as Chapter 4 does not have POINTs to Bribe with.
