Shadow Mantle
So if you want this MANTLE, hurry up and take it...
If you can reach it!Shadow Mantle holder, Chapter 3
The Shadow Mantle (JP: シャドウマント, romanized as Shadō Manto) is an armor found in Chapter 3 of Deltarune. Seam can allude to it in Chapter 2 if two Shadow Crystals were given.[1]
The Shadow Mantle can be equipped to any party member other than Noelle. It gives defense equal to the current Chapter number. It also provides elemental resistance to Dark/Star damage, which is primarily used by the Knight.
The Shadow Mantle is obtained at the end of the Sword Route in Chapter 3.
In order to complete the Sword Route, after each round of TV Time, the backstage area must be accessed to complete all the Original Game boards. Accessing the backstage area requires achieving an S-rank, T-rank, or Z-rank in the previous round, or simply paying to get a counterfeit S-rank from the Pippins in the red carpet hall for 1500 POINTs.
At the end of the manhole dungeon and after defeating the Shadow Mantle holder, the chest containing the Shadow Mantle appears in the manhole dungeon on the screen. HERO_SWORD cannot reach the chest, but Kris can walk onto the screen to open it.
If Kris's inventory is full, the chest appears in the Green Room, on the counter of Ramb's shop.
The Shadow Mantle can be equipped to Kris, Susie, or Ralsei. Similarly to other equipment granted by the Shadow Crystal bosses, it cannot be sold.
It gives defense equal to the current Chapter number, initially giving +3 DF in Chapter 3. It also gives the
Dark/Star ability, which provides high elemental damage reduction against the Dark/Star damage type, including certain attacks from Lanino and Elnina, Tenna, and the Knight.
The Shadow Mantle has unique interactions with the Knight's Dark/Star attacks in Chapter 3:
- All attacks other than the final attack and the slashing part of the Box Splitter have their damage reduced by 67% instead of 66%.
- The Box Splitter slash has its damage halved, dealing 33% of the target's max health rather than 66%.
- If equipped in the first armor slot, Box Splitter and Tracking Swords attacks are redirected. The mantle's wearer is always targeted by at least two hits before targeting becomes random. Once a party member not wearing the mantle is hit, this cycle resets, guaranteeing the wearer to be hit at least 2 times out of 3 during those attacks.
- If equipped in the second armor slot, Box Splitter and Tracking Swords attacks are redirected. The first two hits target the wearer, then all other hits target random characters for the rest of the battle.
Certain attacks also deal less damage to the wearer despite not being elemental attacks:
- The attacks from the Titan and Titan Spawn deal 50% less damage to the wearer.
- The star-shaped bullets from the Hammer of Justice's Pinball Shell attack deal 85% less damage if Susie is wearing the mantle.
- Hell yeah, what's this? [When equipping it to Susie]
- Sh-should I wear this...? [When equipping it to Ralsei]
- No... it's for someone... taller. [When attempting to equip it to Noelle; unused]
- Obtaining the Shadow Mantle from a treasure chest in the Green Room
- Despite the Shadow Mantle holder's appearance giving the impression of a dramatic, pitch black design, Seam states that the Shadow Mantle itself simply looks like an old scrap of cloth.[1]
- If multiple Shadow Mantles are equipped into a single character (via hacks), then the elemental damage reduction percentages do not stack and remain the same as if they were only wearing a single Mantle.

But don't let down your guard. I feel your next opponent may be... hm.
— Seam if 2 Shadow Crystals were given, Chapter 2
In reality, it may be impossible to win.
... Unless you use the power of the Shadow Mantle.
Here, it may look like an old scrap of cloth, but...
... eh?
I can't find it. Did someone... take it...?
Hahaha! Well now, there goes your one chance of victory!
