Annoying Dog

From Deltarune Wiki

The Annoying Dog (JP: うざいイヌ) is a returning character in Deltarune, and represents the game's creator, Toby Fox. It appears across Deltarune as a recurring Easter egg throughout the Chapters. The Annoying Dog is also featured various times on the official Newsletter.

Profile

Appearance

The Annoying Dog is a small white dog with short pointed ears, stubby limbs and a short tail. It has black eyes and a snout, and often sports a smiling face.

Main story

On console versions of Deltarune, the Annoying Dog appears in the loading screen after selecting a Chapter. It is seen hanging by a rope from the top of the screen and animates in sync with the progress bar.

Chapter 1

Dog stat screenshot.png
The Annoying Dog sleeping on the Stats screen

In Chapter 1, the Annoying Dog can randomly appear in the Dark World's Power Stats menu as a special stat. Kris's first "???" slot can randomly change to "Dog:", with the Annoying Dog sleeping beside the text. Ralsei's Kindness slot can also randomly change to "Dogness: 1", which also depicts a dog's face for its icon. This event can also occur during later Chapters.

In Hometown, Kris can look through the window of the library's computer lab, where they can see the Annoying Dog working on a game.[1] The narration states, "(Seems like when the game's finished, you can go in...) (You just have to trust the dog...)" If Kris peers through the window a second time, the dog is "playing the maracas" and not doing any work.

Chapter 2

In Chapter 2, Undyne informs Kris that a "little dog" in a toy car appeared while she was directing traffic. With the car, the dog did "donuts" in the middle of the street. This caused assorted cars to be piled around the library, blocking the road. If Kris interacts with Scared Donut Guy, they explain their disappointment. They had "sped over" when they heard a dog was doing "donuts", expecting food, not a "special attack for cars".

In Cyber City, when Kris is in the third traffic puzzle's west alley, there are yellow signs of a dog. If Kris passes the signs, they are transported alone to a path that leads east.

Further down the path, the Annoying Dog appears in a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe and rams into Kris's SOUL, depleting their HP. This death is scripted to occur. When they are downed, the Undertale Game Over screen appears, and a short version of Determination plays. The Annoying Dog immediately drives into the words with the toy car and squishes them.

Afterwards, Kris respawns at the dog dumpster with a DogDollar in their inventory. The dumpster also has a pillow for the dog to sleep on.[2] This event does not happen on the Weird Route.

As Kris drives Queen and Noelle in a car, they stop due to a traffic jam. Queen comments that "A Dog Must Have Wandered In The Road Again".

In Queen's Mansion, Queen hid a key under one of 48 platters in the dining hall. Kris notices a moving platter with small white limbs underneath it. Upon interaction, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei surround the table. The Annoying Dog reacts with surprise and backs away, and the platter falls off. After Susie attempts to threaten the dog, it runs across the room with the party atop the table.

Once the key is found, the Annoying Dog breaks it, then charges and explodes the locked door. The dog charges through the hallway with the party atop the table, and can still be moved to hit Swatchlings or other platters. When it hits the wall, the party jumps off, and the Annoying Dog flees to the right.

In the introduction of the GIGA Queen fight, the Annoying Dog can appear among the rising boulders.[3]

Chapter 3

The Annoying Dog joins the Rouxls Kaard battle

In Chapter 3, the Annoying Dog has a 1% chance of appearing when the crowd throws roses at Tenna after his introductory presentation.[4] It also appears as one of the prizes that can be won in the Ball Machine, leaving Kris with only a DogDollar.

If 800 POINTs are earned in Monster Movie, the Annoying Dog arrives to destroy the Tenna statue anyways, ending the minigame.[5]

The Annoying Dog's button appears in Rouxls Kaard's encounter after 33 seconds (1000 frames), which replaces Lancer's ACT button.[6] Selecting it depicts the Annoying Dog joining the battle with a Super Smash Bros-esque "challenger approaching" screen and then leaving immediately.[7]

Chapter 4

At the Dark Sanctuary's East Belltower, playing the first four notes of MEGALOVANIA causes the Annoying Dog to ram into Kris with the toy car. Afterwards, Kris refuses to play the fourth note, which is replaced with Concert for you.[8]

In Bibliox's battle, the book that shoots bullets at the SOUL has a chance of having the dog's face instead of a magic symbol.

In Jackenstein's encounter, one of the neutral descriptions is that there is a "texture of a dog playing maracas".

After restoring the Dark Sanctuary, Kris can enter the Study's right door on the second floor. The room is altered, as it instead has two large climbable pillars with a chest at the top. The Annoying Dog enters and stares at Kris before beginning the climbing race. Thundersnail plays, and Kris uses ClaimbClaws on the left pillar, while the Annoying Dog climbs the right pillar. If the SAVE is reloaded for this scene, it is shorter.

Upon reaching the final stretch of the race, the dog's pillar collapses and the dog falls. However, the Annoying Dog appears from the right, and uses a growing, long pair of stilts to reach Kris's pillar. Regardless of how fast Kris is, the Annoying Dog overcomes and outpaces Kris, defeating them in the race.

The Annoying Dog pauses at the chest, before running to the right side, revealing a bone that the dog was actually after. Upon obtaining the bone, the dog leaves. The chest itself contains a DogDollar. Afterwards, the door is locked by a "canine force", and the room cannot be reentered.

Dogcheck

Altering save file data to certain inaccessible or nonexistent rooms (such as room 5), like in Undertale, can result in the Annoying Dog appearing upon game launch. This is referred to as a "Dogcheck", named by the internal procedure for checking for that illogical state. Triggering a dogcheck in each Chapter has different effects:

  • In Chapter 1, the dog is just seen sleeping. Exclusive to this Chapter is the window title changing to "DOGTARUNE".
  • In Chapter 2, it drives the car across the screen and occasionally more (smaller) cars at varying speeds also appear (driven by smaller Annoying Dogs).
  • In Chapter 3, the dog is more pixelated and dances in a similar manner to the sprites in the The Legend of Tenna minigame.
  • In Chapter 4, the dog is faceless and has a scrolling blue water-like texture, much like the ones shown on the prophecy displays.

A Dogcheck screen can occur when loading a save file created in the Deltarune Chapter 1&2 demo or the full version of Deltarune in the SURVEY_PROGRAM version, or when loading a save file created in the LTS demo or full version of Deltarune in the 2021–2022 Deltarune Chapter 1&2 demo.

Dogchecks can also occur if the save file is massively corrupted (such as most of flags are empty and not nulls). There are several Dogcheck tracks associated with the various forms of Dogcheck.

Outside of Deltarune

Chapter 1 Spoiler-Free Trailer

The multiple Annoying Dogs appear in the DELTARUNE Chapter 1 Spoiler-Free Trailer as a censor. This includes censoring everyone's faces, such as Bratty's face and the word "dog". A dog also hides in Blook house, replaces Rudinn's bullet attack during an encounter, and multiple cover Ralsei in front of Castle Town. There are also slight word edits, such as Kris being Dogs, Ralsei being Dogsei, and TP being DP. During the explosion, Some dogs have their tail with a flame, similar to what occurs in Undertale during Mettaton's MTT News segment in Hotland.

UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary Stream

Annoying Dog shaking maracas

In the UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary stream, the Annoying Dog sleeps at the start of the video as various Undertale and Deltarune songs play, including Dog Check and unused music tracks outside the game files. When the timer reaches five minutes and one second, the Annoying Dog wakes up and shakes maracas until the stream begins. As this occurs, the Undertale song, Dance of Dog, plays.

During the stream, the Annoying Dog makes an appearance on the balcony of Sans's house, shaking maracas.

Spamton Sweepstakes

During the Spamton Sweepstakes 2022 charity event, the Annoying Dog appears on two types of pages on the official Deltarune website:

Annoying Dog overworld frame.png
Annoying Dog in the frame

On deltarune.com/dog/, clicking the frame depicts the Annoying Dog and the words "BEST INU" underneath. The song dog, an excerpt from Hall of Fame, plays in the background. The frame itself resembles a sepia variant of the frame used in the PlayStation 4/Vita version of Undertale's Dog Shrine. The unused Hall of Fame assets for Chapter 3 thematically matches this page, and depicts the Annoying Dog with the "BEST INU" plaque underneath.

On deltarune.com, the 404 Not Found error page displays either a sleeping or maracas-playing dog, and is likewise titled "room_dogcheck". making it resemble Chapter 1's room_dogcheck. Clicking the dog plays one of the two unique songs: results, or baci_perugina2. These are teaser versions of Glowing Snow and And Now For Today’s Sponsors...! respectively. The page itself is similar to the countdown during the 6th Anniversary stream. It was added on September 15, 2022, before the Spamton Sweepstakes event began.

Some of the Annoying Dog sprites or related text gets teased prior to a Chapter's release:

For Chapter 2, on Undertale's 4th Anniversary, Toby teased the Annoying Dog in a car,[9] and shared the original track, cybercity_old.[10] The former post's description also alludes to when the Annoying Dog can ram into Kris with a toy car in Cyber City.

The Annoying Dog in a toy car sprite also appeared in the UNDERTALE Xbox One Announce Trailer, during Undertale's Bratty and Catty's dialogue. Incidentally, the trailer's upload date was March 15, 2021, and Deltarune Chapter 1&2 was released on September 17, 2021.

For Chapter 5, Toby shared flavor text of the Annoying Dog being "deployed", which is reminiscent to what occurs in Undertale's artifact room.[11][12]

Roast Chicken

Toby Fox made various "Roast Chicken" posts on his official Bluesky account, which mostly features the Annoying Dog climbing sprite with an occasional gray outline and minimal animation. On the ISSUE 8 - Holiday 2024 Newsletter, Toby announced that he has archived most of the Bluesky posts on his Fangamer page.[13] According to his reply under one of these posts, the climbing sprite was drawn by Temmie Chang on June 18, 2021.[14]

Some of the "Roast Chicken" animations featured assets for Jackenstein's encounter, such as the dancing jack-o'-lanterns, house sprites similar to Jackenstein's bullet boards, and a song about "carpet",[15] One post also has a sped up variant of A DARK ZONE shared on Deltarune's 6th Anniversary.[16] One post also includes editing from Fred Wood and a music arrangement from Camellia.[17]

There is also an unlisted "Roast Chicken" Bluesky post from Toby, with "what will he eat?" as its caption. Bluesky users pasted images onto the plate in response, with one eventually resembling Toby's illustration of the "Roast Chicken".[18]

Undertale

The Annoying Dog first appeared in Undertale as a reoccurring character, where it has the same appearance. It periodically appears to inconvenience other characters, such as Papyrus.

Undertale 5th Anniversary Concert

The sprite of the Annoying Dog playing a piano first appeared at the end of the UNDERTALE 5th Anniversary Concert. Toby Fox played piano-only variants of My Castle Town, Undertale's Snowdin Town, and the song, Home, exclusively for the concert.[19] The sprite later appeared in the DELTARUNE Status Update Sept 2022, and is featured on Toby Fox's Fangamer page.

Trivia

  • As Susie pulls Ralsei into the north alley at the beginning of Cyber City, three cones with the Annoying Dog's face appear to block the path.
    • When Kris checks one, it plays a barking sound used during Undertale's Lesser Dog battle. If interacted with multiple times, the pitch of each bark can vary.
      • This bark can also be heard in Chapter 1, after Kris and Susie seal the Eastern Fountain.
      • This bark can also be heard in Chapter 2, in Cyber Field as the party receive bumper cars to ride on.
  • The Annoying Dog button in Chapter 3 is the same icon that appears in the unused pages of Ralsei's Manual. It describes that the button indicates that a dog consumed the command options.
