UNUSED
Where am I?
Internal game script, Chapter 1
Each Chapter of Deltarune contains an unused script under the name "UNUSED". Each script contains what appears to be dialogue spoken by an unknown character, and there appears to be a continuity across the dialogue in the scripts. It is labeled gml_GlobalScript_UNUSED and is present in every Chapter's data.win file.
Each script is a function whose sole contents are a series of localized strings, reproduced below.
| English | Japanese | |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter 1 | Where... |
ここは… |
| Chapter 2 | No one can hear me, can they...? |
誰にも 聞こえてない…&そうなんでしょ…? |
| Chapter 3 | What is this place, anyway...? |
ここは いったい なんだろう…? |
| Chapter 4 | I'm starting to lose track of the time. |
時間の感覚が なくなってきた。 |
- Spamton's shop dialogue on "FEAR" references the Chapter 1 UNUSED dialogue.[1]
- While the English quote "... can anyone hear me? Help..." is not an exact match to any of the UNUSED dialogue, this line is translated into Japanese as "誰か…いないの? お願い… 誰か… 聞こえてるなら…".[2] This exactly quotes two lines of the Chapter 1 UNUSED dialogue, which correspond to "Is... is anybody out there...?" and "Someone, anyone, if you can hear me..." in English.
- While grammatical gender in Japanese often indicates the gender of the speaker, the UNUSED dialogue is written in a manner that avoids gender-indicating terms.[3]
- A participant in the "How long did it take her to smile?" campaign answered "She lost track of time." and received the response "Look at you, trying to be all original! Move forward with this answer." This answer resembles the phrasing in the Chapter 4 UNUSED dialogue.
| Game edition | Version tag | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter 1&2 Demo | v1.00 | Chapter 1's UNUSED script is renamed from gml_GlobalScript_UNUSED to gml_GlobalScript_UNUSED_ch1 as to not conflict with Chapter 2's UNUSED script, as is done for almost all of the assets shared between the two Chapters. |
| Chapter 1&2 LTS Branch | v1.16 | As the Chapters separated into different data.win files, the script is renamed back to gml_GlobalScript_UNUSED. |

it’s with this one that i’ve started to wonder if the gender of the speaker is being intentionally obscured. they haven’t used a first-person pronoun (meaning “i” or “me”; these usually indicate femininity or masculinity, depending on the one used)—it isn’t exactly uncommon to usually omit those in japanese, but at this point it’s a tiny bit conspicuous, especially with them saying “I feel like this voice (この声, kono koe) is reaching someone” instead of “my voice”, which would require them to use a first-person pronoun.
