Rudinn

From Deltarune Wiki

Long live the guy who pays us!

Rudinn, Chapter 1

Rudinn (JP: モンディ Mondi) is a Darkner enemy in the Card Kingdom that is first encountered in Field. It fights the party due to being ordered to do so by King. It is based on the diamond card suit. Rudinns also appear as NPCs in various locations throughout Card Kingdom and Castle Town.

Profile

Appearance

Rudinn's body is slug-like with diamonds striped across the middle in a line. It has a single visible arm holding a diamond-shaped dagger and it wears a diamond-shaped hood on its head. Its eyes are also diamond-shaped. Rudinn has a white body and the rest of its design details are in various shades of green.

In the Light World, Rudinn is revealed to be a playing card of the diamonds suit in Chapter 3.

Personality

Rudinn appears to care a lot about its wealth, constantly speaking about money and praising the person who paid it. Several Rudinns have even traded their beds for jewelry. It also does not seem to like its job very much, as it can be easily convinced to stop fighting, but its greed for jewels seems to be its priority.

Etymology

"Rudinn" may be a portmanteau of the name of the diamonds suit in various European languages, such as ruiten in Dutch, ruder in Danish, and ruter in Swedish, and "paladin".

Its Japanese name,「モンディ」Mondi, is a partial rearrangement of "diamond".

Main story

Chapter 1

After Lancer, a Rudinn is the second enemy encountered in the game, in Field. Various Rudinns appear later through Field, with additional team members such as Hathy and Jigsawry.

Past Field, Rudinns stop appearing as enemies, instead appearing as NPCs. At the Bake Sale, a Rudinn serves as a vendor, selling a Choco Diamond for 40 Dark Dollars. Before the forest maze, two Rudinns are begrudgingly fanning Susie and Lancer.

Several Rudinns appear in Card Castle, including Susie's cell guard who she "invited" to the trash can.[2] If spoken to, the Rudinn expresses how much he likes the trash can,[3] and that he wants to invite his friends.[4]

Two Rudinns can be found in Rudinn's room on Floor 1F. They sold their beds for "(Normal everyday riches, acquired from a legitimate source.)" The Rudinn on the right gives Kris a Choco Diamond, and assumes that they "tamed the beast". This only happens if no Rudinns were defeated through violence. Otherwise, the party can apologize to this Rudinn if exactly one Rudinn was defeated.

The Rudinn in the third yellow cage on the prison floor can also be used to vaguely check how many Rudinns have been defeated through violence. If the party defeated enemies before, it tell them how it was put in a cage because it did not want to fight them, because they are "terrifying". Otherwise, it instead says it did not want to fight the party because they are much nicer than King.

If no enemy was defeated through combat, many Rudinns help to overthrow King at the end of his battle.

Chapter 2

A few Rudinns can be found in the town square during the party's first visit to Castle Town. One is conversing with a Rudinn Ranger. Another, standing next to the Dojo, refers to Castle Town as "[PLAYER]Town", where "[PLAYER]" is the player's name chosen during the introduction, and claims having heard the name from someone else.

During Ralsei's explanation of the Roaring, a silhouette of Rudinn is shown.

After returning from the Cyber World, one of the Rudinns previously seen fanning Susie and Lancer in Chapter 1 is fanning Queen in the first floor of Ralsei's castle.

Chapter 3

A Rudinn appears in Ralsei's explanation of the Dark Worlds, with one shown transforming into a playing card of the diamonds suit.

Later in the Chapter, a Pippins brings up how Kris stole Rudinns from school and how they lost them somewhere. Another Pippins, after mentioning to Kris that they would take a vow to never cheat again, asks Kris if they remember the "Flying Aces", and follows up by saying that they do not remember either.

The aforementioned Rudinns are the Seven Flying Aces, copies of playing cards created by Kris in an attempt to cheat in a cards game when they were young (as they were not good at counting cards), and are instead found somewhere even more forgotten. These Rudinns are located in Mancountry, where the Forgotten Man is found. Despite referring to themselves as the "Seven Flying Aces", there are only six of them in total in this Chapter.

Chapter 4

A blue-colored Rudinn

If the Watercooler was recruited, the same Rudinn and Rudinn Ranger pair from earlier are loitering near it, thankful for the newly provided accommodations.

The Rudinn near the Party Dojo has now turned blue, and comments "[PLAYER]Town's" state based on if a route was completed and if a Completion FILE was used. The Rudinn can state the town love is "Strong" (if all previous enemies have been recruited), "Plain" (if the current save file was started from Chapter 4 without using a Completion FILE), or "Cracked" (otherwise). It says not to worry about it and that its color must have faded.

If all recruits are present in Castle Town, the Rudinn who previously fans multiple characters in Chapters 1 and 2 establishes its own "fan club" in the training area. Members include a Shadowguy, a Swatchling, and the worm (who gnaws on the leaf instead).

The seventh Flying Ace appears as the receptionist in the 2nd Sanctuary's therapy room with the Forgotten Man, informing Kris of the patients waiting past the door. Once the Egg is obtained, it is left as the only other character in the room, asking Kris about their session before stating that "ART IS THERAPEUTIC".

Chapter 5

Chapter 5 introduces a flower-themed variant of Rudinn known as Floradinn, in a similar vein to Rabbick and Ribbick.

Creation and development

Rudinn (along with Lancer, Hathy, Clover, King, Jevil, and the uncredited Former Kings) was originally designed by kanotynes for her design class, having volunteered to draw 52 unique playing card designs.[5] With the exception of Jevil, all of kanotynes's characters were fully designed by March 2012 — 6 years prior to the release of Deltarune Chapter 1.[6] Rudinn's earliest design was first posted on Tumblr on March 15, 2012 as a character on a jack of diamonds playing card.[7]

Outside of Deltarune

Rudinn appears in the DELTARUNE Chapter 1 Spoiler-Free Trailer. During an encounter, Rudinn, Kris, and Ralsei's faces are censored with an Annoying Dog. The Annoying Dog also replaces Rudinn's Diamond Cutter bullet attack, which target the SOUL.

Trivia

Rudinn overworld tired.gif
Rudinn's unused tired sprites
  • Rudinn has an unused set of "tired" overworld sprites in the game's data, titled spr_diamond_overworld_sleepy1 and spr_diamond_overworld_sleepy2.
    • Based on internal filenames, it appears that the sprite for the blue Rudinn present in Castle Town in Chapter 4 may have been repurposed from these sprites (spr_npc_diamond_sleepy).
  • A group of Rudinns is called a "necklace" according to the battle entry text, "A necklace of Rudinns blocks your path!".
  • The name of Rudinn's weapon, "Diamond Cutter" may be a reference to the lyrics of a commercial jingle for 日本ブレイク工業 [Nihon Break Kogyo]. Toby Fox has used the same jingle in posts on Bluesky.[8]
  • A much harder version of the Diamond Release attack is used during Jevil's fight.
  • Its recruit bio contains a reference to the Pink Floyd song, Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
