Watercooler, Chapter 3

Watercooler (JP: ウォータークーラー) is an enemy found in Chapter 3 of Deltarune. It is first encountered behind the dedicated Cooler door of the Green Room, where it initially looks like an inanimate object. It is heavily implied to be a Mizzle stored inside the tank of a normal water cooler.

Profile

Appearance

The Watercooler is an inanimate water dispenser. It has a gray base with two buttons colored red and blue and a cup dispenser to the side. On top of the Watercooler is a blue, 5-gallon jug of blue water. If at a high enough Mercy level, the water in the jug begins to flicker pink, becoming fully pink when spared, just like a Mizzle. Watercooler's sprite is identical to the water cooler seen at the start of Hotland in Undertale.

Personality

Watercooler is only capable of saying misspellings of the word "bubble", so it is hard to discern any personality from its dialogue because of its extremely terse language. Despite this, the flavor text that appears in their fights suggests that it does not show mercy to those who oppose it (though this is due to Kris's name not being YELLOW according to flavor text). It presumably acts like a normal Mizzle otherwise.

Main story

History

Tenna forced Mizzles to turn into watercoolers.[7]

Chapter 3

The party encounters the first Watercooler enemy in the Cooler room within the Green Room, if they achieved a C-rank or higher, where it is surrounded by two Zappers drinking from it. After either interacting with it or getting close to it, the party is drawn into a fight against the Watercooler, reducing it to a crater from which the party can find 200 POINTs upon winning. The nearby Zappers then express disappointment over the lack of water.

A second stationary Watercooler enemy can be found later on in TV World after Round 3 of TV Time. They appear to guard a chest which is located behind a floor of pink spikes, later revealed to be a fake obstacle. The chest itself contains another Watercooler and 500 POINTs, though this one does not initiate a battle if the stationary Watercooler has been fought. If the chest Watercooler is the first encounter of the room, the stationary Watercooler becomes a chest containing POINTs instead. After either fight, a figure behind a shower curtain in the same room expresses disappointment and sadness if Kris flirted with the Watercooler during the battle.

If the party attempts to leave the room without fighting a Watercooler, a pair of Watercoolers appears to block their way while the stationary Watercooler closes in on them. Going back and forth between the two rooms causes the Watercoolers to get closer to the door. Eventually, four Watercoolers block both sides of the door, forcing the player to fight before proceeding.

Chapter 4

If recruited, a Watercooler appears in Castle Town's town square, being used by a Rudinn and a Rudinn Ranger. The Rudinn Ranger appears to be trying to chat up the Watercooler.[8]

This enemy appears in Chapter 4 in their natural form, a Mizzle. Mizzles emerge from Watercoolers in the Dark Sanctuary, and Miss Mizzle is initially fought in a "Holy Watercooler" before emerging from it later in her fight.

In the 2nd Sanctuary, a stone Watercooler can be found, implied to be a petrified Watercooler.

In battle

Attacks

Watercooler uses 1 attack with 3 variants, with the second and third variant occurring on even and odd (beyond the first) turns respectively.

Rain: Water droplets surround the bullet board, moving towards the center forming a pool which increases in size as more droplets land.

  • The second variant has the pool wobble left to right. The wobble also drags the movement of the bullets, giving the impression that they accelerate at slightly more irregular rates.
  • In the third variant, the droplets approach in a spiral like path, arcing towards the ball with rapidly changing direction and speed.

Available ACTs

No effect. The first time this ACT is used, two more ACTs become available to use.

Strategy

Turn routing
  • The encounter for Watercooler can end very quickly by FIGHTING. This can also be used if intending to SPARE the Watercooler, as it can be Pacified at low HP, and either are by far the fastest method to end the encounter.
  • Using the SPARE action increases Watercooler's MERCY meter by +8% on each use, for a maximum of 24% in a turn without the need to use BegForMercy. Whilst only ACTing, Watercooler can be spared in 5 turns, either by sparing with the entire party, or by using BegForMercy with S/R-Actions/SPARES turn 1, 3 ActCools, and a Flirt, and two S/R Actions/SPARES.
    • BegForMercy and 4 ActCools get Watercooler to 100% MERCY on turn 5, but leave the party unable to spare until turn 6.
    • It is worth noting that Flirting with the Watercooler encountered in the larger TV World will cause Miss Mizzle to take longer to SPARE optimally, as she will notice that Kris flirted with another cooler, reducing her own Flirt ACTs effectiveness. This can be negated by talking to the third Curtain NPC nearby, but this is likely a bug. Using a premature SPARE in place of Flirt for Kris will prevent this from occurring, at a cost of only 2% less MERCY.
Dodging
  • To dodge Rain and its variants, one method involves staying close to the rim of the bullet board, and moving clockwise (or counterclockwise) with the bullets; certain angles will have more droplets close together, disincentivizing staying still. For the second variant, movement should be carefully considered due to the sway blocking off vertical movement at times. For the third, occasional stops or retracing of one's steps will help due to the spiraling movement of the droplets and the changes in velocity making a simple looping motion less viable.
