Everyman

From Deltarune Wiki

Name: Everyman
Description: Just a good guy who shows up on occasion.

UNDERTALE Art Book

Everyman is a returning character and a recurring Easter egg in Deltarune.

Profile

Appearance

Everyman is a white humanoid figure. Everyman's head has a long beak-like protuberance and a hollow-looking eye in the middle of his head.

Etymology

In fiction, an "everyman" is a character archetype describing an ordinary and benign character, often a protagonist, which contrasts with the rapidity and vigor of traditional archetypal hero protagonists.

Main story

Chapter 1

Everyman attack ducks.png
Everyman in Jevil's second carousel attack

During the second version of Jevil's carousel attack, one of the ducks' heads may be replaced by Everyman's head.

Graffiti depicting Everyman and the text "Everyman" also appear on the back wall of the alley in Hometown, alongside graffiti of ICE-E with unreadable text.

Chapter 2

Everyman can appear as one of the pop-up windows in Poppup's pop-up attack. Everyman's window uniquely has a black background and does not animate, in contrast to other windows which have white backgrounds and do animate.

Everyman can also appear as one of the heads in Queen's "Social Media" attack. Everyman uniquely does not emit any words in either phase—this contrasts with the other heads, which first emit horizontally-travelling white words, then emit red censored words in various directions after Queen starts drama. This means that Everyman is the only head who cannot damage the party.

Everyman's expression also does not change, unlike the other heads who become angry upon being "provoked" by Queen.

Spamton Sweepstakes

During the Spamton Sweepstakes 2022 charity event, the donations displayed on the main page, as well as the fake reviews of the merch page "Spamton's SPECIL Fun Pak!!!", have a chance of displaying Everyman's profile picture. The sprite used was directly taken from Queen's "Social Media" attack.

Undertale

In Undertale, Everyman serves as Reaper Bird's main method of attacking. He is notable in that he himself does not damage the protagonist, and the Reaper Bird seemingly attacks Everyman by swarming him with butterflies,[2] causing him to writhe in pain and wasting its first turn.

Upon subsequent turns, Reaper Bird may alternate between having Everyman toss copies of his head towards the protagonist's SOUL, or by having Everyman walk slowly forward, being consumed by butterflies that shoot out and can hurt the protagonist. Everyman's body itself is harmless: only it and Reaper Bird's projectiles can damage the protagonist.

UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary Stream

In the UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary Stream, Toby Fox commented that Everyman is "just a good guy that shows up on occasion, being good" - adding that "pretty much everybody can get along with this guy" and "he has lots to share".[3]

Trivia

  • Everyman could be a reference to the meme Kilroy, a graffiti of a stick figure which started appearing around the world in the 1940s.
    • Both Kilroy and Everyman are notable for showing up on seemingly random occasions.
    • Everyman can be seen graffiti'd in the Hometown alleyway, much like how Kilroy is usually depicted in graffiti.
    • Everyman and Kilroy both have extremely simplistic designs, their only notable feature being their large round noses.
  • Everyman bears a visual resemblance to the character Japhet (specifically his face in The Room) from OFF, an RPG that inspired several characters in Undertale.[4]
Titan Spawn battle unused Everyman.png
Unused Titan Spawn graphic
  • In Chapter 4's files, there is an unused Titan Spawn graphic labeled spr_darkshape_everyman, featuring Everyman's head and neck. It shares the darkshape part of its label with the other Titan Spawn.
    • An unused variable labeled everyman_appeared in the object obj_dw_churchc_titanclimb_2_post (which handles the cutscenes that play just after the final climbing section and before fighting the Titan) seems to have been intended to track if Everyman appeared or not. This variable only has a definition and there is no other code that references it.[5]
