Mauswheel, Chapter 2

Mauswheel (JP: マウスホイール) is a Darkner from the Cyber World that is a miniboss in Queen's Mansion during Chapter 2 of Deltarune. It is a stronger form of Maus.

Profile

Appearance

Mauswheel is a large spinning wheel, made up of multiple purple Maice. In the battle animation, it looks as though there are only three Maice in the wheel; however, when using Catch or CatchX, many more Maice seemingly appear out of nowhere.

Its visual design may be inspired by the phenomenon known as a "rat king", where multiple rats get stuck together by their tails, similarly to Mauswheel.

Personality

Mauswheel, being simply a group of Maice, shares its love for cheese and a fear of Tasques with no distinct personality traits.

Etymology

"Mauswheel" is an alternate phonetic spelling of "mouse wheel", the scroll wheel component of a computer mouse. This connects to the enemy's computer mouse nature. "Maus" is also German for "mouse".

Main story

Chapter 2

In the kitchen of Queen's Mansion, three Swatchlings can be seen panicking about the presence of Maice. These Maice can be found on the left side of the room, presumably having been lured in by cheese. Once seen by the party, the Maice begin rapidly spinning and form a Mauswheel, drawing the party into a fight.

If Mauswheel is at 100% mercy after Catch or CatchX is used, the battle can have two outcomes. If Tasque Manager has been recruited, she and her Tasques appear to deal with Mauswheel, sparing it. However, if Tasque Manager is lost, then Mauswheel is simply spared on its own, since it "runs out of mice". If it reaches 100% mercy via any other method, it is not automatically spared. Even a missed Catch(X) action command works to automatically spare the enemy if it is already at 100% mercy.

If recruited, Mauswheel contributes to the Thrash Machine during the GIGA Queen battle.

On the Weird Route, Mauswheel is found rolling through the hallways of Queen's Mansion. It is possible to avoid the encounter in this route.

Chapter 5

Mauswheel appears in Chapter 5 as one of the participants in a "race of familiars" held in Castle Town.

In battle

Attacks

  • Several cursors follow the SOUL around.
  • After the first turn, alongside the cursors, Mauswheel charges up a series of large white bullets, shooting it out and either continuing traveling as a large projectile, or splitting into 3 revolving circles. They have a random degree of space between each shot.

Available ACTs

Catch

A swarm of Maice spreads out and moves back and forth, with a cage situated above. [MENU] must be pressed to lower the cage and catch the Maice. The MERCY gained depends on how many Maice are caught. If Mauswheel reaches 100% MERCY using this ACT, it is instantly spared.

ACT performed with SusieACT performed with RalseiCatchX

Trivia

  • Mauswheel's flavor text "Rolling around at the speed of mouse..." may be a reference to the line "Rolling around at the speed of sound", one of the first lines of the popular "Escape from the City" song that plays in the City Escape stage from Sonic Adventure 2.
  • Mauswheel's check text "Two mice are better than one! ... Three, maybe not." is a reference to Clover's check text, which goes "Two heads are better than one! Three... maybe not."
  • When Mauswheel is patrolling the halls in the Weird Route, opening up the menu and closing it makes Mauswheel move slower.[2] This is because opening up the menu sets every object's speed to 0 and closing it sets every object's speed back to the default speed; however, Mauswheel's speed is above the default speed, so closing the menu sets Mauswheel's to the default speed, which is lower than its normal speed.
  • The unused flavor text for a tired Mauswheel mentions DPI, or dots per inch, which refers to the sensitivity of a computer mouse. The lower the DPI, the less the cursor moves in relation to the physical mouse.
