Swatch greeting the party, Chapter 2

Swatch (JP: パレッタ Paretta) is a Darkner vendor from the Cyber World. Although he serves as Queen's head butler and leader of the Swatchlings, he is encountered manning his store, which is located at the entrance to Queen's Mansion. After the library Fountain is sealed, Swatch runs Castle Town's Cafe.

Profile

Appearance

Swatch resembles the Swatchlings, having a geometric, colorful, angular bird-like appearance, with a white face, black hair, and an orange mouth. He wears tinted glasses with diamond-shaped lenses, with one lens being orange and the other yellow. The rest of his outfit consists of a half-black-half-white collared shirt, a pink tie, and a half-white-half-black vest on top, with a pink circle on his right side and blue, green and yellow rectangles on his left. Swatch's lower body is never visible.

In the initial release of Chapter 2, Swatch had a different set of symbols on his shirt in the Cafe, as well as a slightly different design for his suit and glasses, as his sprite in that place was instead based on older concept art for him. This was changed in the updated LTS builds.

Personality

Swatch conducts himself in a polite but reserved manner. He values customer service, and seems to enjoy working at the Color Cafe. Spamton in particular was noted to once be particularly valued by the cafe, but these feelings appear to have all but faded with his deterioration, with Swatch noticeably becoming uncomfortable with the subject. He also appears to adore Queen and expresses exasperation from his various encounters with Rouxls Kaard, although he is quick to backtrack on the latter.

Etymology

A "color swatch" is a sample of several colors, typically representing the palette of a piece of art or the colors used to decorate an interior.

His Japanese name,「パレッタ」(Paretta), is derived from "palette".

Main story

History

Some time before Ralsei, Kris, Susie and other Lightners arrived in the Cyber World, Swatch seemingly used to see Spamton regularly, as a customer at the Color Cafe. Swatch assumed the role of Head Butler, and the Swatchlings and Tasque Manager assist him in serving Queen and her guests. At some point in time, he assisted an unknown Lightner in creating the machine that would be used by Spamton to become Spamton NEO before the basement was sealed away and forgotten. As stated by Ramb in Chapter 3, Swatch used to have a mohawk.

Chapter 2

Swatch is met at the Color Cafe at the entrance of Queen's Mansion, where he sells a multitude of items to the party.

After Queen is defeated and invited to join the other Darkners at Castle Town, Swatch joins her. He declares domicile in the Cafe, having thrown out Top Chef, the former owner, as he wanted to make the Cafe into a Bakery. If the Swatchlings have not been recruited, he mentions wishing they had been able to come as well.

If talked to at the counter, Swatch recommends various dishes for the party to try and gives access to the Recruits menu and their seating arrangements at the Cafe tables.

Swatch cannot be interacted with on the Weird Route, as the Color Cafe is inaccessible due to the petrified Rouxls Kaard blocking the doorway. However, regardless of the party's actions, Swatch can still be found in Castle Town during Chapter 2's epilogue.

Chapter 4

At some point between Chapters, Swatch helps Ralsei prepare the tea party in his castle. If Tasque Manager and her Tasques are present, the Cafe turns into a Cat Cafe. Swatch shows annoyance to the change in the venue but still dutifully provides his previous services.

Chapter 5

In Chapter 5, Swatch temporarily leaves his position at the Cafe to open a makeup booth east of Castle Town, in order to give Susie a makeover for her date with Noelle at the festival. The makeup booth is attacked by Zapper, who believes Susie doesn't need any makeup.

  • What? Basement? There's no basement here.
  • You need to relax. Have a drink, and talk softly...

  • ... So that's what happened.

  • That robot was the embodiment of a Lightner's dream.

  • Splashing color from the motion of their hand.
  • The Lightner filled it with their own hope, giving it an incredible power.
  • ... but, in the end, nothing ever came of it.
  • And it was left in the basement with the rest of the corrupted data.
  • ... But that crooked salesman! Somehow, he learned about the robot,
  • And thought he could use its power to fulfill his own twisted dreams.
  • What a pity. To think he was once a valued customer...

Trivia

• Swatch is the only vendor in Chapter 2 that does not make any sort of appearance before entering their shop.
• The "Outfit" dialogue implies that Spamton intentionally stole Swatch's appearance in a failed attempt to gain access to the basement and the robot hidden within. Spamton denies the allegations in the Spamton Sweepstakes.
• It is likely the unnamed Lightner Swatch refers to is the nobody, Napstablook's roommate, who is implied to be the same ghost who became Mettaton in Undertale. They used a computer in the library to design a robot body, then became a shut-in because there was no one to build it for them.
• In Chapter 5, one option Swatch gives for Susie's makeup changes her sprite to have a lot of artifacting. This seems to be a reference to Homestuck, where a version of the character Dave Strider finds a way of recreating JPEG artifacting in real life, such as with Statue of Liberty replicas.
