Papyrus
Papyrus (JP: パピルス), as of Chapter 5, is an unseen returning character in Deltarune.[2][3][4][5] He lives with his older brother, Sans, at their house located east of the grocery store in Hometown.
According to Sans, Papyrus is new to Hometown and has no friends,[6] suggesting he is socially isolated and struggles to connect with others.
Papyrus is first mentioned by Sans' conversation with Kris, following their adventure in Card Kingdom. Before leaving, Sans asks Kris for help with something. Regardless of the answer given, He explains that he wants Kris to meet Papyrus, as he has no friends,[1] but pushes off when they will be able to meet. Interacting with the door to Sans's house leads to the narration mentioning no response, but the distant trousle of bones.[7]
After returning from the Cyber World, Kris can ask Sans about Papyrus, to the which latter admits things did not work out for now and suggests they may be able to see him when Asriel returns from college,[8] which is "next week" as of Chapter 4.[9][10] If Kris has not spoken to Sans in Chapter 1, the latter appears surprised that they know Papyrus before remarking on how irresponsible it would be for him to let a stranger hang out with his brother.[11]
Regardless, Sans informs Kris that meeting his brother will have to wait for the time being if asked further about him. Interacting the door to Sans's house in the Chapter has the narration mention the "trousle" growing further away.[12]
After attending church, Kris and Susie can interact with the door to Sans's house like in the previous Chapters it appears in. Doing so has the narration further reference the ongoing absence of Papyrus's presence.[13]
On the official Deltarune website, Papyrus is noted by name as being "busy", and not being able to be met.[5]
Papyrus first appeared as a major and supporting character in Undertale. He lives in Snowdin Town with his older brother Sans in their two-story house with a balcony. Papyrus wishes to join the Royal Guard to become popular and adored by the denizens of the underground. To those ends, he constantly patrols Snowdin in hopes of capturing a human. He also enjoys puzzles and japes, as well as cooking spaghetti for his friends to enjoy.
The dialogue for interacting with the door to Sans's house in Deltarune references Papyrus's absence, as well as his Undertale battle theme, Bonetrousle, each Chapter.[7] In Chapter 2, the "trousle" is described as going further away.[12] In Chapter 4, the narration alludes to the "trousle" and neutral dialogue in his battle, though it is absent.[13]
- As of Chapter 4, Papyrus has yet to be mentioned by name in in-game dialogue or flavor text.
- Papyrus's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1.
