Wicabel

From Deltarune Wiki

Ring, bell of disaster! Ring! Ha ha, any moment now you shall crumbell!

A Wicabel NPC in the restored Dark Sanctuary, Chapter 4

Wicabel (JP: ウィカベル) is a bell-themed Darkner enemy in Chapter 4 of Deltarune. They first appear as inanimate statues in the Dark Sanctuary, before reappearing as enemies in the 2nd Sanctuary.

Profile

Appearance

Wicabel looks like a handbell in the shape of a woman in a witch hat and dress, with her torso as the handle, her skirt as the bell body, and the clapper for feet.

Her whole body is sky blue; her face and shoulders are cast in shadow. In a single shape, her head suggests both a hat and shoulder-length hair with a side part and swooped ends. Her dress has off-the-shoulder sleeves and a long full skirt.

In battle, her idle animation is swinging slightly side to side. When her spare conditions are met, she stops moving, and her sprite changes to one where her hand is raised to her face, and the top of her head seems incandescent.

Personality

Wicabels are chaotic, mischievous, and whimsical. Their speech pattern is marked by replacing every "-ble" with "bell", some rhyming, and alliteration.

According to a Cuptain, when the Grand Door opened and Wicabels were released, they destroyed the Golden Piano, thus rendering the battle with the Hammer of Justice inaccessible.[3] Reflecting on a Wicabel statue, a Wafer calls them terrible and evil to hide the fact that they actually found them fun.[4]

In battle, they boast about their ability to defeat the player. When the player meets their spare conditions by successfully tuning them, they are embarrassed by the defeat but also seem to calm down, stating that they are "humbelled", as their music becomes peaceful.

Etymology

"Wicabel" may be a portmanteau of "wicked" and "bell". The former part of her name may also be "Wicca", the modern pagan religion which is often associated with witchcraft. It is also reminiscent of the feminine given name "Isabel".

Main story

A Wicabel threatens to curse a Wafer with her song, as Dark Sanctuary plays

In the Dark Sanctuary, a lone Wicabel appears as an inanimate statue next to a Wafer in the path leading to the Old Man's Study. Upon Susie's creation of the 2nd Sanctuary, the Wicabels are brought to life alongside other inanimate Darkners that were once petrified in the Dark Sanctuary. These Wicabels appear as enemies that can be fought throughout the overworld. The room that was once the East Belltower notably contains a Wicabel enemy that player must battle with Kris as their only party member.

Once the Grand Door leading to the 3rd Sanctuary is opened, the 2nd Sanctuary Darkners are no longer petrified. The once-petrified Wicabel gleefully threatens to curse the Wafer with a dramatic, pun-filled "bell song", but the latter instead enjoys listening to her song. In addition, the room containing the golden piano has the piano replaced with a Wicabel encounter.

Available ACTs

Tuning

Good timing= mercy

Triggers a timing event identical to Undertale's attack system. Increases MERCY by a variable amount between 10% and 70%, depending on how close the hit is from the center of the tuning box, and strengthens Organikk's Perform and Harmonize ACTs for the remainder of the battle. A perfect hit also increases the MERCY of other enemies by 20%. If the hit is far enough from the center, the ACT misses, grants no MERCY, and does not strengthen Organikk's ACTs.

ACT performed with SusieTuningx2

Tuning twice

Performs Tuning twice in quick succession. The first hit only increases MERCY by up to 60%.

S-Action

Increases MERCY by 40%.

R-Action

Increases MERCY by 20%.

Trivia

  • Despite Winglade being Wicabel's familiar,[4][6] the two are never encountered together.
  • The battle quote, "Bubell, bubell, toil and trubell." is a reference to the Song of the Witches from William Shakespeare's Macbeth.
  • Backtracking after arriving in Gerson's Study in the 2nd Sanctuary gives access to a Wicabel and Organikk fight.[7] In this fight, no battle message is set,[8] causing the default message, "It is known.", to appear.
  • In some unused battles, Wicabel can appear with Mizzle,[9] and Winglade.[10]
  • The text "All musical ACTs became stronger!" appears even if Tuning misses and does not strengthen Organikk's ACTs.
  • In Chapter 5 the Wicabel at the familiar race says "My secret as a trainer? I only raised its WIT and GUTs stat... by having it bounce around randomly until it touched carrots". This seems to be a reference to both Umamusume: Pretty Derby and Horse Race Test, the former being a game where the player trains horse girls improving their statistics, including wit and guts, and the latter being a simulator where horses bounce around an area to compete for carrots.
