Jigsawry, Chapter 1

Jigsawry (JP: ジグソーリー) is a Darkner enemy in Chapter 1 of Deltarune. It is first encountered in Card Kingdom's Field.

Profile

Appearance

Jigsawry's appearance combines that of a piece from a jigsaw puzzle and a mouse with floppy ears. Each wears a hat between its ears. Unlike Jigsaw Joe and the Puzzle Masters, Jigsawrys have fingers on their hands and shaded ears, and are always pink.

Jigsawrys are very sensitive and emotional beings, unable to face anything without exaggerated reactions. They are not enthusiastic about combat, only partaking out of desperation for money. As such, they quite readily befriend the party.

Etymology

"Jigsawry" is a play on the words "jigsaw" and "sorry", or alternatively, "jigsaw" and "awry".

Main story

Chapter 1

After entering the Field, Kris and Ralsei find a large number of Jigsawrys "clobbered" by Susie. Most cannot be interacted with, but one warns them of the "purple monster" flattening anything that gets in her way. The party later encounters Jigsawrys in various groups of enemies elsewhere in the Field. Although they do not want to fight, they mention during battle that they have rent payments to make. They are extremely happy to be spared and are eager to make friends with the party.

After taking the path on the right from Seam's shop, Susie confronts Lancer. After freeing himself, he sends out three Jigsawrys to attack the party on his behalf.

Chapter 2

Jigsawry is automatically recruited at the end of Chapter 1. At Castle Town, they are one of the units present at the Cafe tables by default, with their order being a lemonade.

In battle

Appears with

Attacks

  • Piece by Piece: Summons two jigsaw pieces parallel to each other outside of the bullet board. After a short delay, they fly towards each other and connect, like jigsaw pieces, before disappearing shortly after. This attack tracks the SOUL's movement. This attack occurs more frequently if there are more Jigsawry in combat, or if Jigsawry is left alone, or with a Hathy.

Available ACTs

ACT performed with RalseiWarning

Prevents Susie's auto attacks from hitting enemies. Disappears as a selectible ACT once Susie joins the party for real.

Befriend

Makes all Jigsawry SPAREable, including the Jigsawry selected for the ACT.

Strategy

Turn Routing
  • Before SPARING, in a nonviolent encounter with a Jigsawry with a hostile Susie, Kris and Ralsei should Warn the enemy of her aggression before taking other actions; Susie can defeat Jigsawrys in one hit due to their natively low HP stat. All SPARABLE Jigsawrys will also reset their SPARE progress if one is hit, making this a high priority for nonviolent playthroughs.
  • Befriend is the only ACT available native to Jigsawry besides Warning, and instantly makes all Jigsawry SPAREABLE. In the story encounter, Warning Jigsawry and then Befriending them will end the fight in 3 turns if Kris and Ralsei SPARE whenever possible.
    • Befriending is unoptimal in the Smorgasboard encounter however, as using X-Flatter or S-Flatter on a Hathy while a Jigsawry is also present allows them to be spared, making 3 enemies SPAREABLE with 2 party actions as opposed to 1 with 1 party action.
  • When playing violently, reserve Susie's attacks for a Jigsawry in combat, as she can dispatch them in one hit. Use Kris and Ralsei's attacks to double into another enemy instead. Prior to Susie joining the party, try to dispatch the enemies on the top with Kris and Ralsei to get to the Jigsawry, as Susie swings at the topmost enemy.
  • If a Jigsawry is spared 10 times, it becomes spareable. Additionally, a Jigsawry reduced to 70 HP or lower becomes Tired. These are possible ways to SPARE Jigsawry, but are comparatively inefficient.
Dodging
  • Dodging Piece by Piece is similar for all its variants. Stand still when the attack begins, and move slightly horizontally if the pieces are moving vertically, or vertically if they're moving horizontally. This will usually also allow dodging a Rudinn's Diamond Cutter if both are used simultaneously.

Trivia

  • Jigsawry's flavor text referring to the fact that it needs to "make ends meet" is likely a pun on the fact that it is a jigsaw piece, which has connectable ends. Jigsaw Joe, also a puzzle-related Darkner, uses the same phrase.
  • A group of Jigsawrys is called a "board".[5]
  • Jigsawry's dialogue in the Cafe may be a reference to The Simpsons episode "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge", in which the in-universe violent cartoon show Itchy & Scratchy is censored due to parental backlash. The titular characters (one of whom is a mouse) are rewritten to be effusively friendly and conflict-averse; their dialogue includes one asking, "Lemonade?", and the other replying, "Please."[6]
