Water you doing?

Mizzle, Chapter 4

Mizzle (JP: ミズル) is a Darkner enemy in Chapter 4 of Deltarune. She resides in a water cooler which is emptied after fighting her. Mizzles are encountered in the Dark Sanctuary and the 3rd Sanctuary. They are the Dark World forms of holy water,[2] housed in water bottles.

The optional miniboss Miss Mizzle is a stronger variant of this enemy, and is stated to be the same species in her bio.

Profile

Appearance

Mizzles are blue water spirits that resemble praying angels. They appear to be based on water nymphs/sprites. Their dresses resemble flowing water, and the two cones of their hats that twirl around when active resemble disposable water cones. When fully pacified, they turn bright pink in color.

Their shape seems to be amorphous, as they are capable of fitting completely inside the Watercoolers they inhabit, and momentarily lose their shape if struck in battle. Often seen in the vicinity of Mizzles are a set of strange, black and white eyes which watch over them when they are TIRED.

Personality

Mizzles are free-spirited, reserved, and playful. This is seen in their propensity for sleep, their occasional use of puns, and their dreamy, distant manner of speech. This is further supported by their Recruit descriptions, where it states they "enjoy doing fairy/princess-like things arbitrarily", implying they are not genuine royalty and simply enjoy roleplaying. Mizzles are often sought after by the Cuptains seen in the Sanctuaries, and can become irritated or disillusioned with their excitement at seeking their hand or protecting them. The eyes that watch the Mizzles as they doze chase those who disturb them relentlessly, though they do not seem to be directly tied to the Mizzles.

Etymology

"Mizzle" is possibly derived from "mizzle" (a rare term meaning "light rain", mainly used in Scottish English), "drizzle" (a more common term for "light rain"),「水」(mizu, Japanese for "water"), and/or "missal" (a prayer book for Mass).

Main story

Chapter 3

Although Mizzles do not appear in Chapter 3, they are implied to be the true form of the Watercooler enemies found in TV World.[3] They are implied to have been "forced" into watercoolers by Tenna's orders.[4]

Watercoolers share several similarities with Mizzles, as they both turn pink when sparable, use female pronouns, and have similar attack patterns involving water droplets falling to the center of the bullet board.

Chapter 4

Though not interactable, many Mizzles can be seen appearing and disappearing while vocalizing in tune to the choir in the first rooms of the Dark Sanctuary, where the track of the same name plays. They later appear as a standard enemy throughout the Chapter. In the Belltower east of the Old Man's Study, they can be found emerging out of Watercoolers when approached.

A particular Mizzle can be found sleeping atop a chest, and can only be reached after fighting a swarm of Cuptains who "attack" the party on sight once they begin to approach, wishing to protect her. They are peacefully knocked away simply by walking into them, but will push the heroes back slightly. After fending off the swarm, the Mizzle wakes up, and accosts the Cuptains for disturbing her nap. Both disperse, allowing access to a chest.

No Mizzles are found during the 2nd Sanctuary, though a Watercooler that has turned to stone can be seen in a large room with multiple other petrified Darkners. An Organikk philosopher admires the craftsmanship shown in how realistic the water looks.

In battle

Appears with

Attacks

Mizzles have two attacks, with many variants between them depending on their circumstances in battle.

Aqua Ring: When a Mizzle is AWAKE, she will create rings of water droplets with a cutout in them, which home in towards the center of the bullet board before coalescing and dispersing.

  • When two awake Mizzles are present, rings have a smaller cutout, and sway slightly from left to right.
  • When an awake Mizzle is alone in combat, rings sway vastly from left to right.
  • When 1 awake Mizzle is present in combat, rings do not sway, and spawn slower.

Eyes on You: When a Mizzle is TIRED, a ring of 3 spotlights will circle around an area in the bullet board. If the spotlights cross with a SOUL, all Mizzles AWAKEN, and 5 eyes begin to chase it, roughly homing onto its position with considerable drift. When caught, this will remove other Mizzle attacks from the pattern, but not the attacks of non-Mizzle enemies. The eyes grant a noticeably large amount of TP (~5% per) compared to many other bullets.

  • When the battle consists of a TIRED Mizzle with another enemy (or an AWAKE Mizzle), the spotlights will circle around a designated point, effectively trapping the SOUL inside/outside of the ring when used in conjunction with another pattern.
  • When the battle consists only of one TIRED Mizzle, the spotlights will close in and twirl, covering a lot of distance, making it easier to get caught.
  • When the battle consists of two TIRED Mizzles, the spotlights will be larger, but close in more slowly.

Available ACTs

Dazzle

35% Mercy

Increases MERCY by 35%. If the Mizzle is TIRED, this wakes her and increases her MERCY by 50% instead.

ACT performed with SusieEmbezzle

TIRE, steal item

Increases MERCY by 35% and inflicts TIRED. Susie also attempts to steal an item:

  • The attempt fails if Susie has already stolen an item from the Mizzle, or if the inventory and storage are full.
  • If the Mizzle was not TIRED before the ACT, the attempt has a 50% chance of failing.
  • If the attempt succeeds, Susie steals a random item:

ACT performed with RalseiNuzzle

TIRE by fluffy move

Ralsei nuzzles the Mizzle, which increases her MERCY by 35% and inflicts TIRED.

ACT performed with SusieACT performed with RalseiLullabyX

Sing to everyone ...?

Ralsei starts singing, but is later interrupted by Susie trying to join. Increases MERCY by 35% for all enemies. If an enemy is TIRED, this wakes them and increases their MERCY by 50% instead.

S-Action

Increases MERCY by 20%.

R-Action

Increases MERCY by 25%.

Strategy

Turn routing
  • Under certain conditions, a Mizzle can enter combat in the TIRED state. By default, each Mizzle has a 50% chance of entering the battle TIRED. However, if that Mizzle is woken up, Mizzles can no longer start a battle in the TIRED state on that SAVE file. Starting a battle with a Mizzle that has been alerted by a bell also prevents all Mizzles from starting a battle in the TIRED state on that SAVE file.
  • It is ideal to TIRE and then SPARE a Mizzle on the same turn, to avoid having to deal with the possibility of Mizzles being AWOKEN during their spotlight attack.
    • This can be achieved by Embezzling a Mizzle with Kris and Susie (which will TIRE her), and casting Pacify with Ralsei on the same turn (though this is not possible on the first turn). This is the fastest pacifistic strategy available.
      • If encountering Mizzles purely to farm for items, it is not advised to do the one turn Embezzle into Pacify strategy, as the 50% chance of failure on Embezzling an AWAKE Mizzle will not guarantee the item. It is possible to TIRE both Mizzles on the first turn with the thresholds mentioned above, if one prefers to guarantee the Embezzle's successes later on, rather than use it immediately from turn 1.
    • Using Ralsei's Nuzzle ACT with Kris is considerably more situational than Embezzle, as it leaves him unable to Pacify that turn, and does not provide the chance to steal an item.
  • FIGHTing Mizzles is a good way to cause TIRED with only a single action, though it will require an ATTACK stat of 32 or more with a perfect accuracy score. FIGHTing allows TIRING multiple per turn, but it is inherently limited by FIGHTing occurring last in a turn order (thus not allowing same turn Pacify chains), and Pacify itself being locked to one enemy per turn.
    • FIGHTing Mizzles with the aim to make them flee is the fastest way to end encounters overall, as 2 perfect strikes with an attack of 32 will cause them to flee.
    • When a Mizzle is brought to or below 50% HP, she becomes TIRED. If a Mizzle AWAKENs afterwards, a hit that does not make her flee will reapply TIRED.
  • LullabyX will wake all TIRED enemies, making it counterintuitive to strategies using Pacify. However, 3 turns of LullabyX and one turn to SPARE means not engaging with the Mizzle's TIRED mechanics, if one wishes to avoid the spotlight attacks. In encounters with more than just Mizzles, LullabyX can see more use due to it affecting 3 enemies and potentially working better with their MERCY thresholds.
  • The low quantities of MERCY from Dazzle, S-Action, and R-Action make them generally unfavorable. It is better to TIRE and Pacify Mizzles as a result.
Dodging
  • All variants of Aqua Ring can be avoided by staying close to the center and weaving through the rings with quick and deliberate movements, which will also net a lot of TP via grazing. When coalescing in the center, the water will lack a hitbox once it begins to disappear, allowing room to reposition for the next ring.
  • Strategies for dodging Eyes on You varies:
    • When dodging whilst other attacks are going on, it helps to keep in mind that the spotlights act more as area denial; staying in the center will negate any threat they pose.
    • When dodging both the small and large hostile spotlights, it helps to weave between the middle of two open rings, and then loop back around to the center in a loose horseshoe shape. The rings will home in on a specific point on the bullet board randomly. The large hostile spotlights move slowly, making them both easy to dodge and good practice.
      • If caught, a method to dodge the eyes spawned if the spotlights catch the SOUL is to keep movements to a minimum, and move through large gaps that present themselves when the eyes charge and miss; often by moving in a fairly short straight line between 2 points. If a player is not confident in dodging them, purposefully colliding with many eyes quickly will hit the party only once, but remove multiple eyes. If all eyes are removed from by taking hits, the attack ends early.

Trivia

  • Mizzle's appearance is reminiscent of the Pokémon Brionne.
  • A Mizzle's watercooler is filled until approached, at which point the Mizzle exits and it becomes empty. The amount of water contained inside the watercooler appears to be random each time the room is entered.
  • Pairing a Mizzle with Miss Mizzle at a Cafe table together prompts unique dialogue from both. While Miss Mizzle seems receptive to the presence of a "regular sort" she can treat as an apprentice, the Mizzle will react negatively, suggesting a strained relationship between the Mizzles and their supposed royalty.[6]
  • In some unused battles, Mizzle can appear with Bibliox, Organikk, or two other Mizzles.
    • In the unused battle with 2 other Mizzles they use an unused version of the Aqua Ring in which the cutout the SOUL has to move through is smaller.
