Queen, Chapter 2

GIGA Queen (JP: ギガクイーン) is a powerful mecha Queen uses to fight the party as the final boss of Chapter 2.

On the Weird Route, Queen briefly pilots the mecha before stopping once Ralsei informs her of the Roaring. In this case, Spamton NEO takes the role as the final boss instead.

Profile

Appearance

The GIGA Queen mecha has white skin like Queen, along with a black heart-shaped screen as eyes, while having a jordy-blue star-like cap, and matching lipstick. She wears azure shoulder pads, a sleeveless jordy-blue leotard with a thin black belt around it that has an azure diamond-shaped crystal-like object in the middle of her, shorter azure gloves, and azure high-heeled pumps. When doing her acid attack, GIGA Queen's star cap and leotard turn to the same green color as her acid.

Personality

Due to being a non-sentient mecha Queen pilots for combat, GIGA Queen has no personality. However, GIGA Queen's face is capable of replicating the emotions Queen herself expresses.

Main story

Thrash Machine versus GIGA Queen as Knock You Down !! plays

After freeing Berdly from Queen's control, the party gives chase to Queen, who once again escapes to the rooftop of her castle. From there, she delivers a monologue about the Knight and wanting to use the power of the Lightners to expand the Cyber World with more Dark Fountains. Susie strikes her down, but Queen retreats to her giant robot, GIGA Queen. With help from Berdly and all the Darkners they recruited, the party creates a large Thrash Machine to fight Queen on an equal level.

After the climactic battle, Queen returns to Noelle with the party captured. When Queen threatens to crush the party to death with her mecha, Noelle tells her that she will never be happy if she is controlling her. Ralsei also tells everyone, including Queen, that making more Dark Fountains will bring the Roaring, a catastrophic event that will destroy all Darkners and bring chaos to the world. Realizing the error of her ways, Queen ends hostilities with the Lightners, releasing the party and shutting down the mecha.

On the Weird Route, when confronting Queen on her rooftop, she immediately launches her GIGA Queen mecha. Ralsei warns her of the Roaring before a battle can initiate, prompting Queen to deactivate the robot. She promises Kris that she will not stop them from sealing the library Fountain.

Creation and development

GIGA Queen screenshot mockup.gif
An early mockup of GIGA Queen's boss fight by Tcheska Lynn B (Chess)

GIGA Queen's boss fight was the first thing Jean Canellas worked on for Chapter 2's development. Jean spent the first two weeks of his employment on Deltarune programming and designing the boss with Toby Fox. This included playing Super Punch Out!! and "fighting people on the street" for experience.[1]

Chess was responsible for creating and testing out most of GIGA Queen's battle sprites. Toby originally planned for GIGA Queen to have a pointy nose, but it ended up getting in the way of the sprite animation. Because of this, the feature was only included in sprites where Chess felt that it looked cool or funny.[2]

When creating songs for Chapter 2's soundtrack, Toby made an early version of GIGA Queen's theme with placeholder instruments. Toby admitted that while this song was not bad, it did not sound like a boxing match. After finishing the Thrash Machine powerup sequence, Toby instead chose to make a song based on that sequence, which eventually became known as Powers Combined. Additionally, the in-game track Giga Size is actually a slowed down version of Queen's original battle track.[3]

In battle

Attacks

  • GIGA Queen moves backwards and flashes with a ping! sound, before punching with her glass of acid. Later phases may perform this in rapid succession.
  • GIGA Queen crouches and flashes with a ping! sound, before attacking in the center with a kick. Similar to Undertale's Asgore fight, the number of times that she flashes determines the number of times that she attacks.
  • GIGA Queen throws baseballs that glow red when the Thrash Machine can hit them. Successfully hitting this attack causes a baseball to fall on GIGA Queen, dealing damage.
  • GIGA Queen summons yellow wheels that roll from both sides.
  • GIGA Queen turns green in order to fire a light cone from her acid glass to the left or to the right. She then throws the acid glass in that direction, which in turn spawns a short acid cloud.
  • Many copies of GIGA Queen move towards the screen, leaving a small gap to dodge them, with undodgable ones kicking, and dodgable ones crouching.
  • GIGA Queen jumps upwards and flashes with a ping! sound, before pirouetting downwards through the middle of the screen.
  • GIGA Queen releases missiles out of her chest that fall downwards and explode once outside of the bullet board.
  • GIGA Queen exhales a line of fire that moves back and forth. The line has gaps which the SOUL can pass through from one side to the other.
    • This attack and the previous one both use Kris's SOUL for dodging, rather than the Thrash Machine itself.
  • Final attack: Copies of GIGA Queen fly from the top before she throws a comically large slow-moving baseball, which must be punched to end the battle.

Available ACTs

FireMode

Power Attacks

Costs 50% TP. Only available if the Thrash Machine's head is set to "Flame". On immediate use, the Thrash Machine strikes GIGA Queen with a critical attack, then gains +30 damage and a +50% damage multiplier.

SwordMode

Power up each hit

Costs 50% TP. Only available if the Thrash Machine's head is set to "Sword". On immediate use, the Thrash Machine strikes GIGA Queen with a critical attack, then gains +10 damage and a variable damage multiplier.

LaserMode

Fast Attacks

Costs 50% TP. Only available if the Thrash Machine's head is set to "Laser". On immediate use, the Thrash Machine strikes GIGA Queen with a critical attack, then greatly increases attack speed for the turn (from 3 hits to 4 hit each aperture time) and gains a +10% damage multiplier.

DuckMode

Sucky Attacks

Costs 50% TP. Only available if the Thrash Machine's head is set to "Duck". On immediate use, the Thrash Machine strikes GIGA Queen with a critical attack, then gains -30 damage, heals the Thrash Machine by 35 HP, and heals 2 HP per punch against GIGA Queen on the next turn.

TurboDodge

Costs 25% TP. Increases the Thrash Machine's dodge length and speed.

SELF-FIX

Costs 20% TP, increasing by 10% per use to a cap of 50%. Restores 100 HP to the Thrash Machine.

Strategy

GIGA Queen has three rounds; the next round starts once the HP of the previous round is depleted. The first two rounds have 1500 HP, while the final attack begins after dealing 1314 damage to the third round. (The round has 1800 HP, but it cannot be fully depleted, instead remaining at 1 HP until the fight is ended by punching the baseball in the final attack.)

FIGHTing deals double the damage it would normally do.

Almost all damage dealt to GIGA Queen is multiplied by an additional multiplier (everything in this section is additive):

  • +25% if it is round 1.
  • +50% in round 3, if no hits were taken in rounds 1 and 2. This increases by 20% per turn after it is activated until the player gets hit (after which the buff remains but stops increasing).
  • +50% if "FireMode" was activated this turn (when the Thrash Machine has the Flame Head).
  • +10% if "LaserMode" was activated this turn (when the Thrash Machine has the Laser Head).
  • If "SwordMode" was activated this turn (when the Thrash Machine has the Sword Head), the first hit gets +20%, then +10% for the second hit, then +5% per hit for the next 6 hits (up to +60%), then +2% per hit past that. (This is cumulative and resets after a missed punch or the turn ends.)
  • +50% if it has been too many turns in the current round.

When punching during GIGA Queen's turns, the base damage is 28, multiplied by the above damage multiplier as well as the following multiplier (additive in this section):

  • -20% if Defend was used this turn
  • +16.6666% per turn, after 18 turns have passed. This can only apply 5 times (to a max of +83.333%).
    • If a round ends during the player's turn rather than by punching during the GIGA Queen turn, the turn counter is automatically increased above 18, causing this increase to start accumulating immediately.

Hitting GIGA Queen's baseballs in the attacks deals 300 damage in rounds 1 and 2, and 80 damage in round 3, unaffected by any multipliers. FIGHTing gives reduced TP compared to usual: 3% for a critical attack, and 1% otherwise. Each successful punch during GIGA Queen's attacks grants 1% TP.

  • For avoiding GIGA Queen's attacks:
    • When GIGA Queen flashes with a ping! dodge to the left, right, or by ducking; the number of dodges corresponding to the number of pings.
      • If GIGA Queen is using is the pirouette attack, then the Thrash Machine cannot avoid the attack by ducking.
    • As GIGA Queen fires baseballs at the Thrash Machine, the Thrash Machine should hit them back. There are usually only three to hit, and it also leaves her open for extra attacks afterward.
    • GIGA Queen's acid throw can be avoided by paying attention to which direction the cone of light is facing and then dodging into the opposite direction. Ducking also works and is considerably easier as there is no need to worry about the direction of the attack.
    • For the copies of GIGA Queen, there is a gap to the left or right where the attack can be dodged. When the gap is not there, there is a GIGA Queen in the center doing a taunting pose, which must be ducked under (pressing down).
    • GIGA Queen's final attack re-uses the same strategies for the clones attack and the baseball. Hitting the large baseball at the end of the attack ends the fight with a cutscene.
  • Following Ralsei's advice, attacks should be dodged and then as many hits as possible should be attempted.
  • Using an Attack to deal more damage makes the fight shorter.
  • Due to how the missiles target the SOUL via loose homing, it is best to stand still for a bit so they mostly go for a single area, similar to the Party Dojo's explanation of grazing.
  • The Thrash Machine's attack power is based on Kris's Attack stat. Its defense is independent, however. Therefore it is a good idea to equip Kris with items that increase their attack power, such as the MechaSaber, the IronShackle, the Jevilstail, or FrayedBowties.

Trivia

GIGA Queen screenshot background.png
GIGA Queen can be faintly seen in the left hallway of the mansion's second floor.
  • Before her proper appearance, GIGA Queen is visible in the hallway before the lift to the mansion's third floor.
    • It is also likely that the large pair of legs at the entrance to the 1st floor are part of the mech.
  • GIGA Queen's appearance may represent the Queen of Diamonds, indicated by a diamond-shaped crystal on the chest of GIGA Queen, despite her Light World counterpart being a laptop.
  • GIGA Queen's max HP is 4500, but the Thrash Machine needs to deplete 4800 HP, as at the third round, GIGA Queen has 1800 HP.
  • GIGA Queen's entire fight, as well as the arcade game at the beginning of Chapter 2, is a direct reference to Punch-Out!!, a fighting game series that originated as an arcade game and was later released on NES, SNES, and Wii.
  • GIGA Queen's fight background may be a reference to Touhou 17's final stage background, which both feature a scrolling, flashing hallway filled with screens/windows, all the while inside a highly technological city.
  • The GIGA Queen battle theme Knock You Down !! is very similar to and appears to be based upon the SNES Mighty Morphin Power Rangers End Boss theme.Additionally, Maximum Jumbo uses an extremely similar sweeping laser attack to GIGA Queen's chalice, with neither laser sweep causing direct damage but instead causing a chain of explosions to occur after firing.
  • If the Thrash Machine does not get hit at all during the first 2 rounds of the GIGA Queen fight, she is further powered up in the third round, to the point her movements leave blue shadows behind. However, the Thrash Machine is also able to inflict higher damage to her in this case.
    • This can only happen on the first attempt at fighting GIGA Queen. If the Thrash Machine is defeated and try again is chosen on the Game Over screen, GIGA Queen does not power up, even if the Thrash Machine avoids taking any damage in the first 2 rounds. If the save file is reloaded, it becomes possible again.
  • If the Thrash Machine loses to GIGA Queen, she repeatedly ducks, referencing the action popular in multiplayer games called "teabagging" or "t-bagging".[4]
  • During the fight, if the party attacks the smaller baseballs she throws but does not attempt to attack GIGA Queen, Queen and the narration still comment as if no buttons were pressed.
