Completion FILE
A Completion FILE[1] (JP: クリア済みファイル), also called completion data,[2] is the Save Data created upon completing a Chapter. A Completion FILE is used to continue a SAVE file from a previous Chapter.
Upon completing a Chapter, a Completion FILE is made in the same slot as the SAVE file. Completion FILEs are separate to SAVE files, so even if the SAVE file is deleted, the Completion FILE is not. Likewise, a Completion FILE will still be created even if the Chapter was completed without saving.
When starting a Chapter other than Chapter 1, a Completion FILE for a previous Chapter can be used in order to continue the SAVE file.
Using a Completion FILE carries over the following into another Chapter:
- Config settings
- The player's chosen name
- Items
- Equipment
- Dark Dollars
- Dollars
- Titles
- Recruits, including if Recruits were LOST
- The selected choices during certain events

In the Light World, the status screen displays the Chapter that the current SAVE file was started from (e.g. "Since Chapter 1" for a SAVE file that started in Chapter 1); the variable internally used to track this is referred to as krispreservationsociety.[3]
Like how SAVE files list the location at which they were made, Completion FILEs list the location at which Kris ended the previous Chapter (followed by "[Chapter X END]"). Since these locations do not have SAVE points in the Chapters in which they are made, these location names do not appear elsewhere.
- Chapter 1 END: Your Room
- Chapter 2 END: Kris's House
- Chapter 3 END: Outside Shelter
Once a Completion FILE has been made, upon replaying a Chapter, it is possible to skip the introduction sequence by having Kris sleep at the starting area they wake up in. Doing this comes at the expense of not being able to collect items:
- Chapter 1: starts at ??????
- Chapter 2: starts at Cyber Field
- Chapter 3: starts at The Legend of Tenna
- Chapter 4: starts at Dark Sanctuary
Using a Completion FILE is optional. Any Chapter can be started without using a Completion FILE for the previous Chapter, even if one exists. If a later Chapter is started without using a Completion FILE, the player has to enter their own name, but is not given the opportunity to provide any other information that would be input in Chapter 1's introduction.
Data from the previous Chapter is set to default values:[4]
- No items in the inventory or storage
- The party has default equipment, which varies by Chapter
- No Dark Dollars
- 2 Dollars
- Default titles
- Not all Recruits, which limits activities and interactions in Castle Town
- Encounters were completed non-violently
- The party did not engage in most optional events
If the Weird Route in Chapter 5 is completed, the completion files will have an extra _b appended to their file names.
If any Completion FILE is present for a specific Chapter, entering that Chapter plays the prophecy cinematic instead of the Chapter-specific one which plays before a Completion FILE is present. For Chapters 1 to 3, the full prophecy cinematic plays; in Chapter 4, it is replaced with a shortened version of the legend which ends at "This is the legend of DELTA RUNE", where the sepia color of the cutscene fades into the glowing blue background associated with the prophecy throughout Chapter 4.
At the start of each Chapter, if any Completion FILE is present for that Chapter, Kris can choose to go back to sleep to skip the Chapter's introduction. In Chapters 1, 2, and 4, this skips straight to the start of the Dark World, while in Chapter 3 it skips to the start of The Legend of Tenna. Skipping this section of the game can cause certain events and items to be missed. In Chapter 4, this option is not available if continuing from a SAVE file that completed the Weird Route in Chapter 2, as it would skip important events in Chapter 4's Weird Route.
In the following tables, the effects of recruits are not included. See the Defaults section for information about the default recruits, and the Recruits page for information about the differences when recruiting.
If a Chapter 1 Completion FILE is present, the following changes apply in Chapter 1:
- At the start of the Chapter, Kris can return to their bed to go back to sleep, which skips the beginning of the Chapter up until Kris enters the Dark World for the first time.
The following Chapter 1 events are carried forward to future Chapters:

If a Chapter 2 Completion FILE is present, the following changes apply in Chapter 2:
- At the start of the Chapter, Toriel's text on the black screen can be skipped through rapidly with [CANCEL] or [CONFIRM]. Normally this option is disabled for this segment.
- At the start of the Chapter, Kris can return to their bed to go back to sleep, which skips the beginning of the Chapter up until Kris enters the Cyber World for the first time. This also skips Noelle giving Susie the lunchbox of chalk (even if Kris spoke to her in Chapter 1), making the LightCandy unobtainable.
- Kris will appear to wake up alone on the first screen of the Cyber World, but Susie is invisibly in the party as indicated by the menu. Once any screen transition is taken, Susie will reappear.
The following Chapter 2 events are carried forward to future Chapters:

If a Chapter 3 Completion FILE is present, the following changes apply in Chapter 3:
- The icon for Chapter 3 on the Chapter Select screen, which initially depicts Tenna's toothy grin, is altered to depict the Knight's visor.
- Kris can go back to sleep on the couch, which skips the beginning of the Chapter up until the start of The Legend of Tenna. This causes a unique cutscene where Susie decides to wander off herself after Kris goes to sleep, and resumes with some unique dialogue from Tenna about Kris traveling to the set on the couch. Kris's name in TV Time is set to "KRS" by default.
- During the The Legend of Tenna's Desert Board, a palm tree in the room with four tiny pyramids is no longer present, allowing access to the bomb field and the fifth key. The Pippins who tells the party about the locations of the keys now mentions that there are five keys in total[19] rather than four.[20]
- If the party loses to the Knight, the player is given the option to either immediately retry the fight or continue to the end of the Chapter.
- The first time this happens, the voice warns the player that the fight is an almost certain loss, then presents them with these two options.[21]
- The second time this happens, the voice comments that they have met with the same fate. If the party does not own the Shadow Mantle or does not have it equipped, the voice warns the player that they are missing something important.[22]
- The voice usually does not appear on subsequent losses, with the two options simply appearing without any dialogue leading into them. However, if the party almost wins the fight, the voice encourages them to try again.[23]
The following Chapter 3 events are carried forward to future Chapters:
| Event | Effect | Default event data |

| Whether the Knight was defeated while owning the Shadow Mantle, defeated without owning the Shadow Mantle, not defeated while owning the Shadow Mantle, or not defeated while lacking the Shadow Mantle. It is also possible to transfer this data without a Completion FILE, as long as the BlueRibbon is not owned. | If the Knight was not defeated, and the party does not own the Shadow Mantle, the Shadow Crystal counter does not increment. | ✓ |
| If the Knight was not defeated, and the party does not own the Shadow Mantle, the Shadow Crystal counter does not increment. If previous Shadow Crystals were given to Seam in Chapter 2, then Seam comments it would have been possible to defeat the Knight if the party had owned the Shadow Mantle. | X | |
| If the Knight was not defeated, and the party owns the Shadow Mantle, the Shadow Crystal counter does not increment. If previous Shadow Crystals were given to Seam in Chapter 2, then Seam comments it would have been possible to defeat the Knight with the Shadow Mantle but it would have been challenging. | X | |
| If the Knight was defeated, and the party does not own the Shadow Mantle, the Shadow Crystal counter increments. If previous Shadow Crystals were given to Seam in Chapter 2, Seam is very impressed by the party's feat of defeating the Knight. | X | |
| If the Knight was defeated, and the party owns the Shadow Mantle, the Shadow Crystal counter increments. If previous Shadow Crystals were given to Seam in Chapter 2, Seam is surprised to learn that Kris found the Shadow Mantle somewhere. | X | |
| If the inventory or storage contains Dark Candy, ReviveMint, ReviveDust, Darkburger, DD-Burger, CD Bagel, TensionBit, TensionGem, or TensionMax at the end of Chapter 3. | If Kris does not own any of these items, the AncientSweet is potentially collectable at the church sermon. | ✓ |
| If Kris owns any of these items, the AncientSweet cannot be collected. Susie has various flavor text talking about the items' Light World counterparts if they choose to dig through their pockets for fun during the church sermon. | X |

| Whether or not Ralsei's room was visited. | ✓ | |
| If Kris did not visit, the cutscene is the same as it was in Chapter 4. | X | |
| Whether or not all Darkners were recruited. | If all Darkners were recruited, Nubert can be encountered alongside Trashy and Little ball. | X |
| Whether or not Tenna was given to nobody. | X | |
| If not, the cutscene replays in Chapter 5, but includes Noelle reacting upon returning. | ✓ |
If a Chapter 4 Completion FILE is present, the following changes apply in Chapter 4:
- Kris can return to the armchair they were sleeping on and go back to sleep for "an incredibly long time", which skips the start of the Chapter up until the first screen of the Dark Sanctuary. This is only possible before Susie joins the party, at the very beginning before Kris walks near the breakfast table. Since this skips visiting Noelle's House, this makes the Holiday Pencil (and thus its Dark World counterpart, the JingleBlade) unobtainable. Unlike Chapter 2, Susie walks on-screen and joins Kris immediately after Kris wakes up.
- If continuing from a Chapter 2 SAVE file that completed the Weird Route, Kris cannot go back to sleep, as this would skip important parts of the Chapter 4 Weird Route. The armchair cannot be interacted with at all.
- The first time a SAVE file that has defeated the Sound of Justice is loaded from the title screen, a short cutscene plays which shows a new light appearing next to the Grand Door in the 3rd Sanctuary.
The following is the default equipment each character has if a Chapter is started without using a Completion FILE.
| Character | Weapon | Armor 1 | Armor 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kris | Wood Blade | Amber Card | Amber Card |
| Susie | Mane Ax | Amber Card | Amber Card |
| Ralsei | Red Scarf | Amber Card | White Ribbon |
| Character | Weapon | Armor 1 | Armor 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kris | MechaSaber | Amber Card | GlowWrist |
| Susie | AutoAxe | Amber Card | GlowWrist |
| Ralsei | FiberScarf | Amber Card | GlowWrist |
| Noelle[note 3] | Wood Blade[note 4] | none | none |
| Character | Weapon | Armor 1 | Armor 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kris | Saber10 | GingerGuard | GlowWrist |
| Susie | ToxicAxe | GingerGuard | GlowWrist |
| Ralsei | FlexScarf | GingerGuard | GlowWrist |
| Character | Weapon | Armor 1 | Armor 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kris | Winglade | GingerGuard | GingerGuard |
| Susie | ToxicAxe | GingerGuard | GingerGuard |
| Ralsei | FlexScarf | GingerGuard | GingerGuard |
The Recruits feature was introduced in Chapter 2. Regardless of what the party did in Chapter 1 or whether they continued from a Chapter 1 Completion FILE, all Chapter 1 enemies will be recruited. In subsequent Chapters, not using a Completion FILE results in some of the enemies not being recruited.
If a Chapter 2 Completion FILE is not used, only Tasque, Werewire, Swatchling, and Tasque Manager are recruited from Chapter 2. Ambyu-Lance, Poppup, Maus, Virovirokun, Werewerewire, and Mauswheel were not recruited. No enemy was Frozen nor defeated with violence.
If a Chapter 3 Completion FILE is not used, only Shadowguy, Zapper, Ribbick, Pippins, Elnina, and Lanino are recruited from Chapter 3. Shuttah and Watercooler were not recruited. No enemy was defeated with violence.
Since Shadowguy and Pippins were recruited, and no enemies were defeated with violence, Tenna will always have been repaired by Susie when starting Chapter 4 without a Chapter 3 completion FILE.
Additionally, because Shadowguy, Zapper, and Pippins were all recruited, Mike's room in Castle Town will be open, allowing access to Mike's boss fight and subsequently the Mike minigames.
If a Chapter 4 Completion FILE was not used, only Guei, Balthizard, Mizzle and Organikk were recruited.
Shadow Crystals can be obtained from past Chapters without using a Completion FILE.
If the Shadow Crystal boss of a previous Chapter has ever been defeated in the same SAVE slot, that boss's Shadow Crystal and equipment can be obtained from the base of the cliff on the west side of Castle Town. In the full version of Deltarune, the Shadow Crystals unlocked in each SAVE slot are displayed in a grid in lower right corner of the screen. The Shadow Crystal and equipment can be obtained regardless of whether the current SAVE file is continuing from a Completion FILE that completed that Shadow Crystal boss or not (and even if no Completion FILE was created after earning the Shadow Crystal).
In the Deltarune Chapter 1&2 demo (unlike the full version of Deltarune), there is no requirement that the Shadow Crystal boss was defeated in the same SAVE slot. In the demo, if Jevil was ever defeated in any SAVE slot, his Shadow Crystal and equipment can be collected from the base of the cliff.
In Chapter 2, when talking to Seam after returning from the Cyber World, if the party has Spamton NEO's Shadow Crystal but does not have Jevil's, and has ever defeated Jevil in Deltarune Chapter 1 (even in a different SAVE file), Seam will hint that the party can obtain Jevil's Shadow Crystal nearby.
The equipment received for defeating Shadow Crystal bosses can have impacts in later Chapters. This applies regardless of whether the equipment was obtained from the Shadow Crystal boss directly or from the Castle Town cliffs.
- Chapter 2
- During the fight with Tasque Manager, if the Devilsknife is equipped, Tasque Manager says, "Chaos, chaos!? No, no! Order, order! Now get rid of that silly Devilsknife!"
- During the fight with Tasque Manager, if the Jevilstail is equipped, Tasque Manager says, "Chaos, chaos!? No, no! Order, order! Now get rid of that silly tail!"
- Chapter 3
- During the Tenna fight at the Cold Place, if any party member has the Jevilstail equipped, the "Bet20" ACT is replaced with "Bet30". Additionally, if any party member has the Dealmaker equipped, and if the Sword Route was not completed, the Check text for Tenna is different and written in Spamton's speech pattern instead.
- In the Bonus Zone in TV World, if the Dealmaker or PuppetScarf is in the inventory or equipped to a party member (and the Weird Route was not completed in Chapter 2), the item transforms into Spamton when inspecting the blue cabinet, which causes Tenna to take the Pipis away. Otherwise, if Spamton does not appear, the Pipis can be obtained.
- If the Dealmaker is equipped, the second flavor text when checking the hay pile in TV World is different.
- In Chapter 1, Kris has a preexisting SAVE file, which is overwritten the first time the player saves. Even if Chapter 1 is completed without ever saving the game, the Completion FILE still displays the player's name as opposed to Kris's.
- Upon inputting a name and selecting "END" when starting Chapter 2 or later without using a Completion FILE, the name centers in the middle of the screen and bobs erratically. This is similar to confirming the fallen human's name on the naming screen in Undertale.
- There is no unique text in response to character names besides "GASTER". In that case, the game resets to the Chapter Select screen when "R" is entered. Similarly, entering the name "Gaster" on the naming screen in Undertale returns the game to its introductory sequence.
- If starting later Chapters without using a Chapter 2 Completion FILE, the Weird Route has not been completed, no enemies have been defeated with violence, and Mauswheel is not recruited. This game state cannot be achieved in normal gameplay as Mauswheel is a mandatory encounter by default and sparing it always causes it to become recruited (since its recruit count is 1).
