Battat

From Deltarune Wiki

Avoid BATTAT and get CATS with MAUS. VOL&SPEED makes BLUECAT, combine for RARECATS!

Instruction screen for Battat

Battat (JP: バタット) is a minigame introduced in Chapter 4 of Deltarune, available on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch devices. Part of a collection of Mike minigames, it is hosted by Small Mike in the TV Studio.

Battat requires the device's mouse and microphone controls to play.

Gameplay

The SOUL is stuck in a square box, constantly moving forwards in an enclosed space. They must avoid the white-outlined meteor obstacles, called Battats, and collect Rarecats for score. Normal Greencats and Bluecats will naturally spawn, but Bluecats cannot be collected and can only be picked up with the MAUS.

The player can control their speed with their microphone's VOLUME. While going fast, Bluecats appear more often, while Greencats stop appearing outside of colliding Bluecats with Battats.

Fuel

The player will have a FUEL meter which constantly goes down 3% every second. Holding a Bluecat also makes the fuel go down faster to ~10% every second instead of the usual 3%. There are ways to gain and lose fuel throughout the minigame, and the game ends when the player is at 0% fuel for 1 second.

When a Rarecat is collected, the default fuel given is handled in the following way:

  • If the player has more than 35% fuel, the default fuel given is 10%.
  • If the player has between 20% and 35% fuel, the default fuel given is 15%.
  • If the player has between 1% and 20% fuel, the default fuel given is 20%.
  • If the player is at 0% fuel, the default fuel given is 25%.

Extra fuel is added on depending on what type of Rarecat is collected, and the different amounts are listed in the table below.

Getting hit by a Battat lowers the fuel amount by 40%, while touching the cavern walls at the top and bottom of the screen decrease the fuel amount by 5% every frame.

Rarecats

While holding a Bluecat, the player can merge it with other Bluecats to combine them and increase the held cat's "LEVEL", changing its color to yellow and, with more levels, to red. A collision between a Bluecat and a Battat will create a yellow field that converts all Battats that touch it into Rarecats. The higher the Bluecat's level was, the bigger and longer-lasting the yellow field will be, derived from these formulas:

frames_active=level1240

field_radius=level15+60

If the Bluecat's LEVEL was 0 (simply a collision between a Battat and a Bluecat), only the Battat that was collided with will change into a Rarecat. The LEVEL obtained upon impact with a Battat will also increase the chance of getting rarer cats. The formula for rarity is as follows:

result=random(100)1.7level0.7+0.3

Below is a list of all possible Rarecats, their values, and the sound played when collected. (In the "How to Get" column, the one closest to the bottom wins.)

Creation and development

Andy Brophy is the creator of the Battat and Jongler minigames.[2]

Battat was teased in /rarecats/ from the Spamton Sweepstakes Silence links. The cats and FRIEND appear and can be combined in a similar fashion to the full minigame.

Noelle's experience in the /rain/ page of finding a cat that gives negative points in the Cat Petters minigames and making her lose instantly aligns with what happens when the player collects FRIEND in Battat, and the same thing happening when FRIEND appears in the "rarecats" link.

Trivia

  • The name Battat may come from either "batte", which is French for a "baseball bat", or "battant", which is French for a "fighter", given that the minigame involves hitting the white-outlined "battats" with leveled-up bluecats.
