Introduction
FIRST.
YOU MUST CREATE A VESSEL.Voice, Chapter 1
Introduction (also known as Survey) is the beginning segment of Chapter 1 of Deltarune. During this segment, the game's window is titled "CONTACT" on the PC version.
In this segment, a mysterious voice asks the player to create a vessel, fill in its personality, name it, and then provide their own name. This vessel is stated to be discarded at the end of the segment. The voice's dialogue can be slightly sped up by holding the CANCEL button.

Internally referred to as DEVICE_GONERMAKER, the customization starts with the building of a body.[1] The selectable parts are grayscale, and starts from head, body, to legs.
The HEAD has 8 different hairstyles: bald, messy bangs, long hair with a stray bang, long hair with more noticeable bangs, long hair with the bangs combed to the left, long hair with messy bangs, hair with a long bald spot, and long hair with no bangs.
The BODY has 6 options: a long-sleeved shirt, a t-shirt, two long-sleeved sweaters, with the latter covering the hands slightly, a zipped jacket, and a button-up shirt. Each BODY option is gray with two white stripes.
The LEGS have 5 options, with all of them being dark pants and shoes. The first four are identical, with the fifth flipped horizontally.
Upon completing the body, the voice asks the player if they "ACCEPT" it. Answering "YES" progresses to the next section, while answering "NO" returns to the beginning of the customization process.
The 7 asked questions are meant to shape the mind of the vessel. The answers have no gameplay effect and cannot be retracted once chosen. Some of the answers for the questions are not true to real life, such as food answers only being flavors or a sense, blood types C and D.

Regardless of the player's answers, the voice answers "UNDERSTOOD." and progresses to the next section.
In the naming sequence, the player names the vessel, then enters their own name. Only uppercase letters are available, and the character limit when naming the vessel is 9, whereas the character limit when naming the creator is 12.
If the game's language is set to Japanese, in addition to the uppercase Latin letters, there are also 81 hiragana and 81 katakana (46 base characters, 10 small kana, 20 kana with dakuten, and 5 kana with handakuten) as well the chōonpu (which appears on both the hiragana and katakana pages). Names can be up to 12 characters long in English, or 7 characters long in Japanese. In Japanese, Latin letters are rendered as halfwidth characters, in contrast to the rest of the text being rendered as fullwidth.
The creator's inputted name is later displayed on the SAVE file slot. After the naming sequence, the introduction progresses to its conclusion.
Setting certain names for the vessel or creator alters their response.[2][3]
| Condition | Naming the vessel | Naming the creator |
|---|---|---|
| Default | WE CALLED IT '<NAME>. | '<NAME>'. EXCELLENT. TRULY EXCELLENT. |
| '<NAME>.' AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE. | '<NAME>.' YOU ARE ABOUT TO MEET SOMEONE VERY, VERY WONDERFUL. | |
| '<NAME>.' AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE. | '<NAME>.' HOW INTERESTING. | |
| GASTER | Returns to the Chapter intro[4][5] | |
| Same name for creator and vessel | OF COURSE OF COURSE. OF COURSE THEY ARE THE SAME. (overrides all other unique responses) | |
The voice thanks the player for their time. The scene then cuts to black and ANOTHER HIM stops, and text displayed in sentence case and standard font states that the vessel will be discarded, since "No one can choose who they are in this world."[6] w begins playing as this text states, "Your name is" before the game cuts to Kris's room, with Toriel's exclamation of "KRIS!" seemingly completing the sentence.
The creator's name transfers via completion data, being displayed on the SAVE file slot. In Chapter 2 and Chapter 4, a Rudinn uses the creator's name to refer to Castle Town, calling it "<NAME>Town".[7][8] Although the vessel is apparently discarded, its information is saved as flags 900 to 909 of the save file, indicating that the player's inputted answers could be re-utilized in a future Chapter.[9][10]
When starting a new SAVE file in a later Chapter without using Chapter 1 completion data, the player is prompted to enter their own name in order to start the Chapter. The available characters are the same as the ones available in Chapter 1. While there is no commentary on the inputted name, entering "GASTER" returns the game to the Chapter introduction animation. There is no opportunity to create or enter any information for a vessel. In the save file data, the vessel defaults to the first option of each question, except for its gift, which defaults to MIND.
There are unused questions for this sequence. The voice originally asked, "FIRST. ARE YOU PHOTOSENSITIVE?"[11] There is also an older version of the "FAVORITE FOOD" question is left over in the files, with the options of "GRAINS", "MEAT", "DAIRY", "SWEETS", "FRUIT", "VEGETABLE", and "EGG".[12][13] These are listed under DEVICE_CHOICE, which is only used for the "YES" and "NO" options in the final game.
Post sequence, there is unaccessed code for dialogue before the scene transition to Kris's room. w would begin playing as the screen would cut to black, and several lines of dialogue would be displayed in a unique text style.[14][15] The global.typer value used for this dialogue is 999, which is not used anywhere else, and has unique values for its textsound and special properties.[16]
In the modified build of Deltarune's Chapter 1 used in Undertale's 6th anniversary stream, the "PAIN" option from the "FAVORITE FOOD" question was substituted with "NACHO FLAMIN CHEESE".[17]
- Internally, many assets for the introduction use uppercase text, such as the primary background being named
IMAGE_DEPTH, andDEVICE_GONERMAKER.[18][1]- "Goner" is a term that first appeared in Undertale, via the Goner Kid and the Goner Clam Girl, who are also similarly grayscale characters.
| Game edition | Version tag | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter 1&2 Demo | v1.00 | Setting the creator's name to "GASTER" now restarts the game, same as setting the vessel's name to Gaster, as opposed to closing the game. |
| Due to changes in how Deltarune's code is structured, Gaster's name restarting the game now redirects the player to the Chapter Select. | ||
| Chapter 1&2 LTS Branch | v1.16 | Due to changes in how Deltarune's code is structured, Gaster's name restarting the game now redirects the player to the start of the currently selected Chapter. |
