Titan (Chapter 4)
It has no consciousness.
It only exists to destroy.Ralsei, Chapter 4
A Titan (JP: タイタン Taitan) is the final boss of Chapter 4 of Deltarune. It is encountered after the Knight makes a Dark Fountain within the 3rd Sanctuary, causing it to petrify and then come apart to reveal the hatching Titan.
It is a dark-element enemy, and receives bonus damage when hit with the BlackShard.[2]
While it initially resembles a Dark Fountain, the geyser quickly hardens into a stone pillar and cracks open like an egg, revealing its true form.
In this form, its body is black and covered in eyes, and it has clawed, human-like hands covered in eyes, along with large white wings. At the top of its body is a faceless, winged, humanoid head with a hole in place of a face (normally covered by a shield that resembles a SAVE point). The head is the only part of its body that is visible when the party fights it.
The Titan's description and appearance may imply that this form is unique to this Titan, and that other Titans may take on different forms based on the Dark World they are created in.
According to what Ralsei states about the Titans before the battle, the Titan has no cognition or personality to speak of. He claims it only exists for the purpose of destroying everything in sight, generating Titan Spawn to help it do so. Upon attempting to SPARE the Titan, the narration states that it is "not something that can understand MERCY".
The Titan does not speak during its battle. It appears to have some amount of instinctive ability to recognize threats to its survival, as when it is damaged, it withdraws its head behind its wings to absorb its Spawn to heal. Beyond that, it does not seem to care for its offspring at all, as besides absorbing them, it will carelessly destroy them with its attacks while its shield is broken in an attempt to damage the SOUL.

The Titan is formed when the Knight creates a Dark Fountain in the Last Chamber of the 3rd Sanctuary. As the Fountain is created, it solidifies before the Titan's hand bursts out and attacks the party. Ralsei urges them to climb the newly-formed pillar.
While Kris climbs the pillar, portions of it begin to crumble away as the Titan hatches, eventually growing wings as Kris attacks the large eye at the top of the lower section. Kris and the rest of the party eventually manage to get out of the Titan's line of sight. As Ralsei explains the nature of the Titan's formation, however, it notices the trio, forcing them to run as it destroys parts of the floor. After being confronted by and defeating the Titan Spawn, the party jumps back onto the pillar and climbs to the top.
At the top, the Titan awaits the party, fully hatched. As they battle the Titan and repeatedly destroy its shield, it closes up and heals itself, nullifying any damage it received. Just as the situation seems hopeless, the Old Man arrives and helps them to destroy the Titan's shield one more time. Susie and Kris then jump into the Titan, where Kris's SOUL shines forth and destroys it from within.
In all attacks, there is a aura of light around the SOUL which can burn surrounding white projectiles. Once a projectile has been in range, it gets purified, and leaves COURAGE behind.
| Turns since last Unleash | TP Gain per Courage |
|---|---|
| 0-3 | 1.6% |
| 4 | 2.4% |
| 5-6 | 3.2% |
| 7+ | 4.8% |
- Additionally, there is a multiplier to the TP gain based on how many deaths have occurred on this battle. 8 deaths gives a 1.2× multiplier, and it increases by 0.1× per death up to 2× (at 15 deaths).
The Titan picks its attacks based on 6 different phases of combat, 3 phases where its shield is up intercut by 3 phases where its shield is down, progressing each time the player uses Unleash and each time the shield comes back up. Once the Titan's HP is lowered to 50%, attacks are scripted for the rest of the fight.

The Titan cycles between 3 attacks.
- Swarm: Titan Spawn appear around the bullet board and slowly chase the SOUL. These are easily destroyed by the SOUL's light, generating COURAGE. The Red Spawn cannot be defeated, but also functions similarly to Titan Spawn. These only appear in the board for a short time.
- Centipedes: Two centipedes made of 4 body segments will appear and circle the board, periodically rushing towards the SOUL. Each segment is purified by the heart's light separately, but if the head is purified the entire centipede is purified, generating a large amount of COURAGE. If all of them are defeated quickly, the turn may end early. Additionally, smaller single-segment centipedes will continuously spawn, going directly towards the player and being quickly purified for small amounts of COURAGE.
- The Hands: Two huge four-fingered hands appear on each side of the board, floating up and down before closing in, covering most the board. When they retract, they each spawn two bullets moving slowly in a random direction. This repeats once before the attack ends. The fingers can be purified by the light while they are closed in. Finger stumps from purified fingers will sometimes fire a bullet while they are retracted.
- If all four fingers on one hand are broken, the hand explodes. This does not give any extra COURAGE, but it stops the bullets from spawning from that hand after that point. If both hands explode, the attack continues for a second longer than it would otherwise.
- The eyes on the hands are what actually needs to get purified; any other part of the hand inside the light does not work.
The Titan will repeat one attack.
- Big Shots 1: Titan Spawn will appear around the bullet board and slowly chase the player; they will drop COURAGE when purified. While this happens, the Titan will repeatedly charge up, then fire two big shots of darkness aimed at the SOUL, which cannot be purified. Any Titan Spawn hit by the big shots will be erased without dropping COURAGE. After 3 deaths, the big shots will move slightly slower on this attack.

The Titan will cycle between 3 attacks.
- Swarm, Harder: The amount of Titan Spawn and Red Spawn is increased, reducing the space available to move through. Additionally, some of the Titan Spawn will be Evolving Spawn, which are slightly larger and have a vertically elongated shape.
- Centipedes, Harder: The large centipedes have 6 body segments instead of 4 and are slightly faster.
- The Hands, Fast: The entire attack happens faster, including the speed at which the hands float up and down, close up and retract, the speed at which the bullets move and the speed at which the fingers are purified. Additionally, the hands will have time to close and retract a third time.
The Titan repeats one attack.
- Big Shots 2: The amount of Titan Spawn is increased, the charge time of big shots is decreased, and each shot comes in a burst of two, aimed in the same direction. After 3 deaths, the big shots will move slightly slower on this attack.

The Titan cycles between 3 attacks.
- Swarm, Hardest: The amount of Titan Spawn and Evolving Spawn is increased, but Red Spawn stop appearing. Some of the Spawn will be Desperate Spawn, which have a horizontally elongated shape, but are similarly sized to Titan Spawns.
- Centipede, Hardest: The large centipedes are now three 3-segment centipedes, which move faster.
- The Hands, Fastest: The entire attack happens even faster, allowing time for the hands to close and retract a fourth time.

The Titan first uses the Desperation Shots attack, then only uses Big Shots 3 until the end of the phase.
- Desperation Shots: The Titan rapidly fires bursts of big shots, alternating between 2 or 3 at 30° degrees of each other, angled to be centered on the SOUL's location. After 12 bursts, the Titan will suck all big shots left on screen back towards itself, absorbing them and then firing a gigantic laser which can be avoided by hugging the top or bottom of the board.
- Big Shots 3: Same as Big Shots 2, but each shot comes in a burst of three.

Brighten
Powerup light
Increases the light glow's radius around the SOUL on the turn it's used.

DualHeal
Heal party
Costs 16% TP. Heals the party based on Susie's and Ralsei's MAGIC. It weakens with every use.
Unleash
Reveal weakness
Costs 80% TP. Drops the Titan's shield for 2 turns.
WakeKris
Revive Kris
Costs 16% TP. If Kris is downed when it is used, they are revived with 1 HP.
ReviveKris
Revive Kris
Costs 16% TP. It heals Kris to a third of their max HP, or by half their max HP if they were not downed, rounded up.

DualBuster
Double magic
This ACT only appears after the Old Man joins the party in battle. Susie and the Old Man cast buster-shaped spells simultaneously, with both projectiles dealing between 1950 and 2050 damage, regardless of stats. Similarly to Rude Buster, the attack can be empowered by pressing [CONFIRM] right before it connects.
The Titan cannot be spared and must be defeated violently. Normally, the Titan has a shield; using Unleash will temporarily remove the shield.
- This battle takes place in Darkness, reducing TP gain from normal means.
- Instead, the recommended way to gain TP is through collecting COURAGE from the enemy attacks.
- DEFEND is often not a good choice in this battle, as Brighten is extremely useful for dodging the attacks when the shield is up, and when the shield is down, it is preferable to FIGHT.
- TP-increasing items are unaffected by Darkness, making them able to significantly speed up the fight. If they are being used, it is best to save them for after the second Unleash to skip the difficult attacks in the third phase.
- The more the player loses the fight, the more TP COURAGE will recover. At 8 losses, the amount recovered will be 1.2 times greater than normal, increasing by 0.1 until it is 2 times the normal amount, at 16 losses.
This battle (alongside the Titan Spawn battle) has some unique ACTs:
- Unleash: costs 80% TP. It drops the Titan's shield for 2 turns, and progresses the fight to the next phase.
- The third time Unleash is used while the shield is up, the Titan's shield remains down until it reaches 50% HP.
- If the shield is already down when Unleash is used, this ACT does nothing.
- Brighten: costs 4% TP and everyone's turn. It enlarges the glow's radius, allowing the SOUL to purify the attacks from farther away.
- DualHeal: costs 16% TP and everyone's turn. It restores HP[6] to every party member. The multiplier is given according to the following table:
| DualHeal uses this battle | Multiplier | Total multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1.5 | 9 |
| 1 | 1 | 6 |
| 2 | 0.8 | 4.8 |
| 3 | 0.3 | 1.8 |
| 4+ | 0.2 | 1.2 |
- WakeKris: The replacement for S-Action. Costs 16% TP. If Kris is DOWNed when it is used, they are revived with 1 HP. Otherwise, this ACT does nothing.
- ReviveKris: The replacement for R-Action. Costs 16% TP and heals Kris to a third of their max HP. If Kris was not DOWNed, they are healed by half their max HP. (Rounded up.)[7]
When the Titan's shield is up, all damage dealt is multiplied by 0.5[8] (If Kris has the BlackShard equipped, they deal 3× of the regular damage[9]). When the shield is down, damage is 5×[10] (10× if the BlackShard is equipped[11]).
After the third time using Unleash, there is an additional damage multiplier that increases as more turns have passed. This multiplier is 1.2× for the first 2 turns, then 2× for the next, and 3× afterwards.[12]
Susie and Ralsei can attack on the turn that Unleash is used, letting them get two attacks instead of only one in the first two Unleashes.
If the party dies twice to the Titan, Scarlixir and Rhapsotea can be found in two chests.[13] For every subsequent loss, another chest containing Rhapsotea appears - up to a maximum of 5 Rhapsotea chests.[14]

Once the Titan has been brought to 50% HP or lower, any DOWNed party members are revived, and the Titan covers its face with its wings and spends four turns absorbing Titan Spawn to heal back up. In this covered state, all attacks deal only 0.1× damage, and the BlackShard does not increase this. The Titan will heal 3150 HP three times and 10500 HP on the fourth turn, uncovering its wings from its face at the end of the fourth turn with its shield regenerated.
At this point, the Old Man throws a hammer at the Titan's shield from offscreen, cracking it, followed by him temporarily joining the party to help defeat it. After that, a new ACT called DualBuster will appear, replacing all previous ACTs, which allows both Susie and the Old Man to deal massive damage to the Titan, and destroying its shield as well. After using DualBuster a second time, Susie will suggest an idea she has to Kris. After that, the Susie's Idea ACT will replaces DualBuster.
The Titan will not attack after the Old Man joins the battle, unless DualBuster is not used on the first turn (in which case the Titan will use the Swarm, Hardest attack until DualBuster is used) or Susie's Idea is not used during the turn she suggests it on (in which case the Titan will use the Big Shots 3 attack until Susie's Idea is used). Nevertheless, it is impossible to lose to the Titan when the Old Man is present, as the Titan can only DOWN Ralsei, then Susie, and put Kris at 1 HP. Any further damage taken appears to show the number of damage, but the player will not be sent to the Game Over screen, and at the end of the Titan's turn, the Old Man will always heal any DOWNed party members back up. If the Titan's HP is under 8500 (40%) and it is supposed to attack that turn, it will instead spend its turn healing 10500 HP. It is possible to bring the Titan down to 1% HP by attacking until it is at just above 40% HP and using DualBuster twice, however it cannot die and will stay at 1% HP; therefore, the only way to end the fight is to use Susie's Idea.
Alternatively, it is possible to keep the Titan in its first phase by not using Unleash, preventing any phase transitions from occurring. While constantly damaging the Titan through its shield is time consuming, it allows avoiding all of its harder attacks. Once the Titan reaches 50% HP, it will automatically begin the usual 50% HP cutscene, including the part at the beginning where it is shown recoiling with no shield (the shield will suddenly disappear).
- [After climb]
- [Susie] Hahh... hahh...
- [Susie] Doesn't... look like we can go much higher...
- [Susie] ... Ralsei, are you okay...?
- [Ralsei] I... I'm fine. Just... a little rattled.
- [Susie heals Ralsei and Kris to full HP]
- [Ralsei] Susie...
- [Susie] Don't mention it.
- [Susie] Let's... go.
- [End of the line]
- [Susie] End... of the line, huh.
- [Ralsei] It... seems so.
- [Susie] Guess we just... wait for the Titan to show up, huh.
- [Ralsei] ... no.
- [Ralsei] It's already... been here the whole time.
- [Susie] H... Hey dumbass!
- [Susie] Don't know if you got the memo... but...
- [Susie] We're heroes.
- [Susie] And there's a whole lot of stuff written in our lives
- [Susie] ... we haven't gotten to see yet.
- [Susie] So get out of our way.
- [Susie] Or... as soon as my hands stop shaking...
- [Susie] My axe is gonna chop you in half, got it!?
- [Susie] Kris! Ralsei! Let's go!!
- [Titan's HP at 50% or below]
- [Susie] Did... Did we do it...?
- [After Titan shields itself]
- [Susie] H-hey, wait! What is it... doing...?
- [After Titan heals #1]
- [Ralsei] It's... regenerating.
- [Before Titan heals #2]
- [Susie] Hey, Ralsei, how do we stop it!?
- [Ralsei] I...
- [Ralsei] I don't know...
- [Before Titan heals #3]
- [Ralsei] It seems... it seems we were only...
- [Ralsei] ... damaging its outer shell.
- [Ralsei] As long as the inside is intact...
- [Ralsei] This battle... will just keep...
- [Susie] ...
- [After Titan heals #4]
- [Ralsei] I suppose...
- [Ralsei] We just have to... keep on fighting.
- [Old Man flings a hammer at the Titan]
- [Old Man] What're y'all givin' up for?
- [Old Man] You're not out of ideas yet, are ya?
- [Susie] Old... old man! I thought you were...
- [Old Man] I was lookin' for a change a' scenery...
- [Old Man] But this is a bit ridiculous.
- [Old Man] C'mon, let's get this fellow!
- [Susie] ... yeah!
- [After DualBuster]
- [Old Man] Geheh, not bad!
- [Susie] Heheh, right?
- [Susie] ... still, we've only harmed the outside..
- [Old Man] Then ya know what to do, right?
- [Susie] ...
- [After one more turn]
- [Susie] Kris! I got an idea...
- [Susie] But, uh...
- [Susie] You're gonna have to put your life in my hands.
- [Susie] ... kinda, literally.
- [Susie] ... damn, what am I asking for!?
- [Susie] We both know I got this, right!? Let's go!!
- [After Susie's Idea]
- [Susie] ... Nah screw it!
- [Susie] Get dunked on!!!
- [Susie] W... We did it...
- [Susie] ...
- [Susie] ... hey Kris, what's the deal with that red heart thing...?
- [Susie] Is that... your...
- [Susie] W-wait a sec! The old man!
- [Susie] C'mon!! We... we still gotta talk to him!
- [Ralsei] Kris!
- [Ralsei] Kris... Kris, you're alright...!
- [Ralsei] I can't believe... it actually worked!
- [Ralsei] We... actually defeated a Titan...!
- [Ralsei] If we can do that, then...
- [Ralsei] Kris, w... where's Susie?
- [Ralsei] SUSIE, WAIT!!

Smallbu Animation animated the Titan's hand.[17][18] AlexMdle had made all of the Titan's attacks.[19]

Taxiderby had created concepts for both Ralsei's ReviveKris and Susie's WakeKris, with the cherub sprite by them, and the latter art of Susie smacking the back of Kris's head to wake them up being unused.[20] Taxiderby also worked on the sequence where Kris and Susie go into the Titan.[21]
- Some of the Titan Spawn that can appear in the later "Swarm" attacks resemble the "dentata" that Omega Flowey uses during the fight against him in Undertale.
- Ralsei noting that the Titan has "already... been here the whole time" in response to Susie waiting for it to show up may be a reference to the line "HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO OUTRUN ME. WHEN I AM ALREADY HERE?" spoken by the character Lord English from Homestuck, a webcomic series which Toby Fox has made music for.

- The Dark Fountain from which the Titan is formed is remarkably similar in size, color, and shape to the Dark Fountain seen on the Chapter Select screen after clearing a Chapter.
- The climb and the subsequent battle against the Titan use a unique dynamic border made up of its numerous eyes. When it is attacked, the eyes briefly glow red.
- As of Chapter 5, the Titan is the only final boss that does not manipulate the bullet board in some way.
- The Titan also has the highest HP of any enemy in the game so far, at 21000 HP.
- While Kris cannot normally be DOWNed once the Old Man joins the party, the latter will still revive them with candy if this happens by some means (e.g. file modification).
- The ending of the Chapters 3+4 trailer appears to show this specific Titan in a spoiler-free way, including the presence of wings unfurling from in front of its face, and a brief impression of a four-pointed star.

Thank you 🥰 We worked a little on ch3/4 of Deltarune. I'll talk a bit more about it later, since it's heavy spoilers. Enjoy the game, and congrats to our dear pal @tobyfox.undertale.com on his release, and for making everyone smile!!!!

I just want to clarify, because I have been asked quite a bit! The Titan sequence from Deltarune, and anything SmallBu animates, is not rotoscoped! Rotoscoping is cool! We just don't do that unless we're asked to. All of this came out of a brain 🧠🫰
