Rude Buster

From Deltarune Wiki

For example, I thought your Rude Buster was scary before...
But now, I think it's really b--
Umm, bad-bum!

Ralsei, Chapter 4

Rude Buster (JP: ルードバスター) is a spell in Deltarune, usable by Susie. By default, it costs 50% TP in encounters, but this can be reduced to 40% if Devilsknife is equipped. It is an attack that inflicts moderately more damage than the standard FIGHT action. When using this spell, Susie launches a purple energy wave from her axe at the targeted enemy.

Main story

Chapter 1

Rude Buster is available starting from Chapter 1, when Susie rejoins the party in Card Castle.

Afterwards, Susie Master in the Field's Tutorial room alludes to the spell dealing more damage with an input.[1]

During the battle against King, Susie unlocks a powered-up version of Rude Buster, known as RedBuster, after using her respective Talk ACT.

Chapter 2

In Susie's room in Ralsei's castle, the rug on the floor has a design that resembles Rude Buster's attack animation.

In Chapter 2, Susie uses Rude Buster in several cutscenes.

  • When Spamton NEO accosts Kris in the Queen's Mansion basement, Susie strikes him with Rude Buster from off-screen, forcing him to temporarily retreat.
  • When Noelle is cornered by a pair of Werewires in her room, Susie strikes their wires with Rude Buster, pacifying them.
  • While Queen is monologuing atop her balcony, Susie strikes her with Rude Buster, knocking her off.

During the battle against Queen, RedBuster is available by default.

Chapter 3

A Pippins in the S-rank changing room offers a tip explaining how Rude Buster deals more damage by pressing [CONFIRM].[2] It charges 1 POINT for the advice, or gives the advice unsolicited if Kris chooses not to pay, or if Kris has 0 POINTs.

Chapter 4

Susie comments on a prophecy tapestry

If the tea party cutscene is triggered in Kris's or Susie's room in Castle Town, Ralsei talks about Susie's Rude Buster and compliments her on it.

A prophecy tapestry in the 2nd Sanctuary that reads "AND LAST, WAS THE GIRL. AT LAST, WAS THE GIRL." depicts Rude Buster's attack animation. Susie concludes that the prophecy is referring to her when reading it.

Susie uses Rude Buster multiple times against the Knight in the 3rd Sanctuary's Last Chamber, but the Knight dodges each strike. During the battle against the Titan, Susie unlocks a powered-up version of Rude Buster, known as DualBuster, which she casts alongside the Old Man.

Chapter 5

Rude Buster is a key mechanic in Chapter 5's platforming sections with various uses, such as breaking bells or stunning bullet patterns.

Mechanics

Rude Buster deals damage based on Susie's Attack and Magic using the following formula:

(Attack×11+Magic×5TargetDefense×3)[3]

When boosted by the YellowHat, the following formula is used instead:

(Attack×12+Magic×5.5TargetDefense×3)[4]

Pressing [CONFIRM] just before the projectile strikes the enemy (or any time during the attack before Chapter 3) makes it deal 30, 28, 20, 13, 11, 10, or 7 more damage depending of the timing decreasing each frames. This is indicated by a larger shockwave upon striking the enemy accompanied by a distinct sound effect. As of Chapter 5, this can deal a maximum of 543 damage with the JusticeAxe, PowerBand, and the YellowHat equipped (without stat bonuses from defeating enemies or pressing [CONFIRM]).

RedBuster

RedBuster's attack animation

RedBuster (JP: レッドバスター) is a powered-up version of Rude Buster, available during the battles against King and Queen. It costs 60% TP, and can only be used through Kris's ACT command, using both Kris's and Susie's turns. This attack does significantly more damage than the standard FIGHT command. Damage output is based on Attack and Magic using the following formula:

(Attack×13+Magic×6TargetDefense×6+90).[5][6]

Like Rude Buster, it deals 30 more damage if [CONFIRM] is pressed mid-attack. The TP cost is not reduced if Devilsknife is equipped.

DualBuster

DualBuster costs 0% TP, and is available during the battle against the Titan. Like RedBuster, it can only be used through Kris's ACT command, uses both Kris's and Susie's turns, and is a significantly powered-up version of Rude Buster. For plot reasons, it is also displayed as using the Old Man's turn in addition to Susie's. Both Susie and the Old Man casts a buster-shaped spell simultaneously, and each is scripted to have a base damage of between 1950 and 2050 regardless of stats. Similarly to Rude Buster, the attack can be empowered by pressing [CONFIRM] right before it connects.

Platforming

Susie's S-Action in Platforming sections is a homing Rude Buster with various uses, such as stunning enemies or spinning Pinwheels.

Trivia

  • Rude Buster can be powered up by pressing [CONFIRM] even during cutscenes in which it is used. This has no functional use since there are no instances in which Rude Buster deals damage outside of battle.
  • RedBuster has an unused spell variation that can be used independently from the ACT menu. This version is completely identical to the used version, other than the spell version costs 0% TP to use.
