Asgore to Kris, Chapter 5

Asgore Dreemurr (JP: アズゴア・ドリーマー) (/ˈæzɡɔːr ˈdɹiːmər/ AZ-gore DREE-mər) is a returning character in Deltarune. The former police chief, he is the father of Kris and Asriel and lives alone at the Flower King shop in Hometown.

In Chapter 5, he becomes the king of the Flower Kingdom Dark World created in his shop, and serves as the Chapter's overarching antagonist before coming to his senses.

Profile

Appearance

Asgore is tall, broad, and covered in white fur. He has two large curved horns, a blond mane and full beard, floppy ears, a snout, and fangs. His overworld sprite has a thin mustache across his lip while his dialogue portrait shows a gap in the middle. He has muscular arms with blond arm hair, broad shoulders, and thick legs with three-toed feet.

Asgore wears a pink Hawaiian shirt with white flowers and blue jeans. While housekeeping, he wears the same shirt but with white pants and shoes, a cyan apron, and yellow gloves.

In the Dark World, Asgore appears largely the same, but his mane and facial fur becomes a shade darker. He initially wears a yellow shirt with a flower on it, pink pants, and a golden crown. Later, as he enters Flower Castle, he changes into a suit of golden armor with a purple cape, keeping the crown, resembling more closely his appearance in Undertale.

Personality

Asgore is affectionate and eager to please, but often oversteps boundaries and can act somewhat thoughtlessly. This is shown in his numerous attempts to reestablish a relationship with Toriel despite her obvious discomfort.

Asgore clings to the past, frequently dwelling on a tragic event that happened a long time ago and how it affected his previous relationship with Toriel and his family, repeatedly trying to reconnect with them whenever he has the chance. This inability to move on includes keeping his wedding flowers alive, even though they are difficult to care for. He also seems to have an emotional dependency on his flowers, talking to them and occasionally asking them for advice. At the end of Chapter 5, he vows to stop dwelling on the past and pay more attention to Kris and Asriel, accepting that Toriel might not forgive him.

Like Toriel, Asgore is religious, though instead of attending the church service by day, he visits at night to pray for his loved ones.

Asgore is not used to selling flowers since gardening was always a hobby of his, instead having a tendency to give bouquets away without payment. Recipients for his gifted flowers include Toriel, Rudy, Alphys, Kris, and Susie, though they are also found in multiple Hometown trashcans. Due to this, he owes rent to Carol, which he is unable to pay.

Asgore lives irresponsibly and is negligent towards himself. Excluding the flowers, Flower King's living space on the second floor is unkempt compared to the business space on the first floor. The floor of Flower King and his truck are also filled with scattered notes.

Main story

History

Asgore went to college with Rudy. He also used to attend parties along with Rudy and Toriel, though he was not active in them. At some point, Asgore married Toriel. On their wedding day, Asgore gave her a bouquet of seven flowers, with Rudy attending as his best man. He later lived with Toriel, Asriel, and Kris at the Dreemurr residence. Every Sunday, he and his family would go to QC's Diner after church service.

At some point prior to the events of Deltarune, Asgore became aware of the Dark World's existence after an unspecified incident. Believing that his family blamed him for the event, he shifted the blame onto the Dark World itself and grew obsessed with finding out the truth, to the point of estranging himself from his family, Toriel divorcing him, and his removal from the police force, with Undyne being promoted to take over his position. Asgore then took up selling flowers at the Flower King and working as a cleaner at Noelle's house to make ends meet. He consequently convinced himself that if he was able to prove he was not at fault, he could regain his old job and get the family back together. As part of his research, he gathered notes, investigated Noelle's house, and gained possession of a BlackShard.

Chapter 1

Asgore hugging Kris in Chapter 1's epilogue, as A Town Called Hometown plays

After returning from Card Kingdom, Kris can visit Asgore in the Flower King shop. Kris initially finds him facing away and humming as he tends to the flower wall with a watering can. Upon hearing someone enter, Asgore finishes and greets the visitor. When he realizes the visitor is Kris, Asgore goes over to them and gives them a bear hug. He immediately lets go of Kris and apologizes, and recalls that Kris dislikes that type of hug. Asgore then steps back to the flower wall, and encourages Kris to be comfortable in the shop. This leaves Kris free to explore the first and second floor of the Flower King.

Interacting with Asgore prompts him to suggest that he, Kris, and Asriel could possibly go to QC's Diner together when Asriel returns. Interacting again causes Asgore to consider driving them around town in his truck.

If Kris goes upstairs, Asgore follows and appears at the alternate staircase of the second floor. If Kris interacts with Asgore, he explains that the seven flowers are difficult to take care of due to the climate. Inspecting the air mattress and refrigerator prompts Asgore to comment; for the mattress, Asgore assumes Kris may want to sleep over, and belatedly realizes he would have nowhere else to sleep. For the fridge, Asgore encourages them to take anything from it. If Kris has the Egg in their inventory, it will be placed in the fridge with no input from the player.

Before Kris leaves, Asgore wishes them a good day, and gives them a bouquet of flowers for Toriel. Asgore asks them to keep it a secret. However, Toriel is not fooled. If Kris offers the bouquet to her, she begrudgingly accepts them. Once Kris leaves the room and returns, inspecting the trash can reveals that it is emitting a stronger floral scent, heavily implying Toriel disposed of the flowers. The trash can continues to bear this scent in Chapter 2. In Chapter 4, well-watered flowers can be found inside the trash can.

Chapter 2

Asgore's abrupt arrival and the subsequent egg pun, as sans. plays

After Kris and Susie return from the Cyber World, the two can explore the leftmost side of Sans's grocery store, then go right. They overhear a conversation between Toriel, Sans, and Asgore. Asgore abruptly enters the store to exclaim he is Toriel's "eggs-husband", to complement Toriel and Sans's egg-related puns. However, he is met with an awkward silence.

When Toriel greets Asgore, he admits that he did not expect to see her, and nearly offers flowers. As Toriel is about to excuse herself, Asgore questions what they can do when Asriel returns. Toriel states that they can discuss this later and departs, and Asgore asks her to say hello to Kris for him.

Asgore then approaches Sans, and refers to him as "bone man" as he expectantly waits for Sans's answer, which is free pickles. Asgore is grateful for the pickles, then asks for Sans's opinion on what flowers to give to Toriel. Sans suggests he should "talk to his plants", and Asgore admits he did ask the flowers first, considering them good listeners. As they converse about the flowers, Asgore acknowledges that he does keep the flowers in a glass, similar to a movie. When Sans wishes Asgore a good day, Asgore laughs and admits he is trying to have one before leaving the store.

Chapter 3

Before Tenna battles the party, he recalls the Holiday and Dreemurr families watching TV together at the Dreemurr residence. Each member disappears one-by-one from the recollection, with Asgore being the third to disappear, directly after Dess and Carol.

Chapter 4

Asgore attempts to make amends with Toriel after church

After Kris, Susie, and Toriel finish attending church, Asgore rushes out of the bushes nearby. Getting down on one knee, Asgore attempts to make amends with Toriel by using another bouquet of roses while declaring what a coincidence it was to have crossed paths with her. Toriel awkwardly informs Asgore that she is busy and asks if they can speak another time before heading off. Despite being rejected again, Asgore notices Kris and gives them the bouquet before leaving.

While Kris and Susie are visiting Noelle's House, Asgore is working as a cleaner. Just after Noelle asks Susie out to the festival, Asgore comes over to the couch and begins eating from the snack platter on the table; however, Carol tells him to eat the platter outside. Outside, Asgore notices Susie telling Kris about her frustration over Carol disrupting the study session. He comforts them both by giving them the rest of the snack platter. If spoken to afterward, Asgore cheerfully explains his partnership with Carol and his hopes of getting back on his feet by the day of the festival.

Asgore reflects on the past and vows to set things right, as The distance between two plays

During the player's exploration of the house's vents as the SOUL, Asgore can be heard talking to himself in the bathroom, noting that he needs to concentrate. In the Holiday parents' bedroom, Asgore stands by a corkboard talking to an "old friend". Here, he mentions how Toriel will finally see that he "just wanted to protect everyone". He then contemplates the beauty of a "black shard" that he has in his possession.

Within the 3rd Sanctuary, a glass tapestry depicting the prophecy shows Asgore with his hands enclosed around a lone flower. The caption above reads "THE FLOWER MAN, TRAPPED IN ASYLUM." This tapestry is internally labeled spr_dw_church_prophecy_boss3_icon, following the same naming convention used for the prophecy tapestries of both Queen and Tenna.

Weird Route

On the Weird Route, Asgore notices that Kris is not feeling well and prepares a special treat for them in advance. He interrupts Kris's beating of the SOUL to inform them that Carol wants everyone to leave her house. Outside, Asgore gives Kris a Hot Chocolate and wishes them well before leaving.

Chapter 5

Asgore preparing for the festival

In the hours before the festival, Asgore can be seen putting up flower decorations. When talked to, he details the history of him and Toriel being voted Festival King and Queen, and the history of the name of his shop. He also expresses concern for Toriel's living,and his hopes for him to get his job back.

During the festival, Asgore can be seen outside of his shop, selling flowers. He talks about the past of Kris and Noelle at the Ferris wheel, and offers flowers to the party for free.

After the Festival, Asgore returns to his store, continuing to sell flowers. He is in his shop when the Flower Kingdom Dark World was created inside, causing him to appear throughout the Chapter. In the Dark World, he quickly befriends Flowery and they engage in activities such as fishing, watching a cowboy show, and eating at a diner together. Throughout this, Flowery attempts to make him happy and keep him from finding out that the party is in the Dark World with him. While Asgore initially appears to be engaged with Flowery's distractions, he is later shown to be merely playing along, asking if he could see something resembling a "black river, rising out of the ground".

When the party makes their way to the Cliffs, Flowery sends Asgore back to Flower Castle, where he spends time with the seven flowers, though quickly loses interest and returns to his research, now being closer than ever to finding out the truth about the Dark World. When the party arrive in Flower Castle, Asgore becomes alarmed that Kris is in the Dark World and pushes them and Susie into a pillar of light to send them back into the Light World, demanding that they not return. Kris and Susie immediately re-enter through the back door, unknown to Asgore.

As the party progress through the castle, they find Asgore's notes about a Dark World from a long time ago scattered about. They find Asgore talking about the person who created the Dark World, where he promises that he will find them and parade their dead body around Hometown to finally prove his innocence. The party interact with the seven flowers and find that all of them have been fighting for Asgore's attention, trying to distract him and make him happy.

During Kris's battle against Flowery, they are knocked back by the impact of their final attack and fall to the ground. Asgore finds them and rushes to their side to comfort them. He tells Kris the story of how he became obsessed with the Dark World, having believed that his family had blamed him for an unknown event. He describes how he had promised to prove his innocence and ensured nothing like that would happen again. Seeing Kris hurt as what he considers now to be a result of his actions, he realizes that his family never blamed him for the event, and his obsession with finding out the truth alienated him from them, eventually causing his divorce with Toriel and the loss of his job. Asgore tells Kris he is proud of them for having grown despite his absence and decides to stop pursuing the truth. He accepts that Toriel might not forgive him, and offers to take Kris and Asriel to the diner when the latter comes back from university. He tells Flowery that he was only humoring him and the seven flowers and asks Kris to seal the Fountain.

After the Fountain is sealed, Asgore and the others are shocked to find that they are still in the Dark World, realizing that a second Fountain was made behind their backs. The Knight appears and kidnaps Asgore, gravely injuring Flowery as he tries to protect him.

At the end of the Chapter, after the second Fountain is sealed, it is discovered by Kris and Susie that Asgore hid one of the codes to the shelter in the soil of Flowery's glass container. Susie recounts how Flowery told her that since Asgore was previously a chief of police, he would know the code.

Kris

Kris is Asgore's adoptive child, though Asgore is not an active caregiver for them currently.

Asgore hugging Kris

Since Asgore and Kris do not live together, in conjunction with the strained relationship Asgore has with Kris's mother, they do not see each other as often. Despite this, Asgore is affectionate towards Kris and deeply cares for them. Asgore is eager to spend time with Kris, and becomes excited at the notion of them sleeping over, readily offering food in his refrigerator and his mattress despite his inadequate living situation. Though Asgore lacks contact with Kris, he is interested in knowing how they are doing in school, and often asks Alphys about them. He also prays for them at church.

Asgore is proud of Kris and becomes apologetic in Chapter 5 after realising that he had been neglecting them in favor of learning the truth about the Dark World. He praises them for having become courageous and wise, as well as having made friends while he was isolated from them.

During the Chapter 4 Weird Route, Asgore becomes worried about Kris's well-being and prepares a Hot Chocolate for them after leaving Noelle's House.

Asgore attempts to offer Toriel flowers

Toriel is Asgore's ex-wife. The two divorced because of Asgore's obsessive behavior related to an unspecified traumatic incident related to the Dark World from back when he was on the police force. Due to a percieved failure on his part, Asgore became swallowed up in his own insecurity that he was 'crazy' and 'a failure', which he projected onto Toriel, despite her, nor anyone else, calling him such. They are not on speaking terms by the start of the game, with Toriel actively attempting to avoid Asgore. Despite this, Asgore often approaches her to talk or to gift her flowers, mentioning he wants to get the family back together, seemingly still in love with her. (Although it may also be that he wants Asriel to come home and see things to be 'back the way they were', which he mentions later.) These interactions often end with Toriel making a quick exit and refusing his flowers.

Asgore's desperate attempts to reconcile with Toriel often place him in situations that make her feel uncomfortable while embarassing himself in the process.

Asgore's experiences in the Dark World within his flower shop lead him to reconsider his perspective, now finding his quest for retribution and proving his worth to have ultimately been pointless, having only led him to hurt his family. Additionally, through his interactions with the Flowers, he also starts to understand what it's like to receive strong unwanted affection, hinting that he now understands how he made Toriel feel. He once again tells Kris that he wants to spend time with his children again, but that it can just the three of them, should Toriel not want to be around him.

Rudy

Rudy is Asgore's best friend, having been good friends in college and his best man at his wedding. Likely due to their relationship, the Dreemurr and the Holiday families frequently spent time together. Asgore frequently visits Rudy's hospital room, gifts him a varying bouquet of flowers, and includes him in his prayers. While Rudy makes jokes about the flower-giving being a romantic gesture, the flower-gifting habit makes him worry about Asgore's financial situation.

Alphys

Alphys is Asgore's friend. Alphys states that Asgore approached her by frequently asking how Kris was doing in school, bringing her a bouquet each time. She shares her interest in media with him, lending him superhero comic books, which can be found atop the TV on Flower King's second floor, and also introducing him to her favorite anime, Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2. It is heavily implied that Alphys gave Asgore the doll that would later become Pink.

Carol

Carol is Asgore's employer. They used to be neighbors and family friends, and seem to have arranged a deal where he cleans at her house in exchange for her funding his Flower King shop; however, she advises him to make more money by selling flowers instead of gifting them. Even though Carol comes across as cold, she is not cruel to Asgore and allows him to take food from her house. Asgore seems to have a positive opinion of her, smiling at her commands and describing her as lovely.

Outside of Deltarune

Asgore first appeared as a major character in Undertale, and is the King of Monsters. Due to an unfortunate circumstance, Asgore swore vengeance against humans and wants to collect seven human SOULs. He lives in his home in New Home, where he routinely tends to the golden flowers, and often hums while doing so. In the True Pacifist ending credits, Asgore wears the exact same attire as he does in Deltarune.

The "Flower King" shop also references his role and affinity for the Golden Flowers in Undertale. Asgore's first appearance in Chapter 1 is a near-identical replica of his first appearance in Undertale, with similar dialogue and Kris's movements mirroring the protagonist's.

• Asgore's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1.

Asgore watering the flowers

• In Undertale, Asgore claims to be watering the flowers in the Throne Room while facing away, despite having no visible watering can, sparking some player jokes that he was urinating on the flowers instead. In reference to this, Asgore's sprite in Deltarune of watering the flowers, which has a visible watering can, is internally referred to as spr_asgoreu_notpiss.
  • When Asgore cleans the bathroom of Noelle's House, he is facing away from the camera and standing in front of the toilet. His object in this room spawns with the sprite set to spr_asgore_piss, but immediately gets overridden by his upwards walking animation.
• Asgore's dialogue portrait indicates an incomplete mustache, with two ends that do not meet. His overworld sprite instead has a full beard, more closely resembling his appearance from Undertale.
