Spamton, Chapter 2

The ThornRing (JP: いばらの指輪) is a ring-type weapon in Deltarune. It can only be obtained in Chapter 2's Weird Route from Spamton for 1997 D$. The ring can only be equipped to Noelle, and it gives +14 AT, +12 Magic, and the following Trance effects:

  • It halves the TP cost of Noelle's ice spells: IceShock and SnowGrave. It is required to cast the latter spell.
  • In an encounter, it gradually reduces Noelle's HP down to a third of her maximum HP (rounded to the nearest integer), but cannot decrease it any lower.[1] Versus Berdly, this calculates to 55 HP.
  • Noelle's title changes to "Ice Trancer", with the description "Receives pain to become stronger."

The ThornRing is currently one of the strongest obtainable equipment in-game, with its AT only surpassed by the BlackShard.

Main story

Chapter 2

The ThornRing is alluded or referred to by Spamton as a "[Commemorative Ring]":

  • If Kris defeats Spamton via FIGHTing, Spamton exclaims that if Kris had been violent earlier, he could have sold it to them.[2] If the Weird Route was aborted after buying the ThornRing, he states that Kris should have bought two.[3]
  • In the Trash Zone at Spamton's shop, selecting "OUR DEAL" causes Spamton to mention it while explaining the KeyGen.[4]

On the Weird Route, once Noelle has Frozen all enemies in Cyber City, Kris can buy the ThornRing at the dog dumpster if their inventory is not full, and if Berdly was not encountered. Spamton hints that the ring might "[Sting]". After purchasing, he states that the purchase will make them "[Regret] FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE".

If the Weird Route was aborted, the ThornRing can be kept in the weapon inventory if it is unequipped from Noelle before battling Berdly.

Chapter 4

The Light World counterpart of the ThornRing appears in Chapter 4's Weird Route when Kris and Susie visit Noelle's House. Upon checking Dess's guitar for the shelter code, Kris removes the SOUL and hides it in a nearby drawer when Noelle calls for them. Shortly after, Kris moves the SOUL to a gift box and leaves to talk to Noelle in her room, where the player can listen in.

As Noelle recalls Kris visiting her last night to apologize and remove the thorn from her finger, the SOUL gets transported into the room via a choice prompt and is able to re-enter Kris's body. After horrifying Noelle by confirming that the events of the Weird Route were not a dream, the player directs Kris to bring out the ThornRing and corner Noelle on the couch. Despite Noelle's frantic protests, Kris forcibly equips the ring to her.

The screen goes black as a red crack erupts from Noelle's hand, accompanied by ominous_worse. Neither the ring nor Noelle appear for the rest of the Chapter.

Trivia

  • Spamton NEO reveals that the ThornRing's price of 1997 D$ is the same as his favorite year.[5]
  • The ThornRing is the most expensive purchasable item, not counting the FreezeRing (which cannot actually be purchased) or KeyGen's fluctuating prices.
  • Unlike Kris's Light World weapons, which are equipped through the Light World inventory, the thorn must be stabbed into Noelle's finger to be considered equipped.
  • In Castle Town, the ring can be fused with the PureCrystal to create the TwistedSwd, though the PureCrystal is unobtainable as of Chapter 5.
    • The TwistedSwd has a Trance ability which, despite sharing the same name, is different from the ThornRing's Trance ability.
  • The ThornRing can be obtained earlier than it should be via a glitch.[6] This glitch can also be exploited to obtain multiple ThornRings.
    • This glitch is the only way for Spamton to refuse to sell it if there is not enough D$, as the party always obtains at least 1997 D$ on the Weird Route in Chapter 2 from freezing enemies, and there is no way to spend money on the Weird Route in Cyber City.[7]
