Malius, Chapter 1
Malius (JP: マリウス Mariusu) is a Darkner smith in Deltarune from Card Kingdom. They are adept at fixing things. They are initially found in a room directly north of the Bake Sale area in Forest. In Chapter 2 and Chapter 4, they reside in Castle Town's Top Bakery until Chapter 5, where they are seen near the bakery outside.
Malius is an anthropomorphic toy hammer. Their head is a double-faced red hammer with yellow eyes and handle that acts as their neck. Their body is also red and they wear a two-tone purple (left) and dark green (right) kimono, with their arms crossed. Malius produces a squeaking sound when striking an object or a person with their head, suggesting that they are based on a squeaky toy hammer.
Malius claims to be able to fix anything and seems confident in their own ability to do so, and shows a great admiration towards weapons. Malius is kind and helpful to the party, always offering their services for free.
"Malius" is likely a play on malleus, Latin for "hammer". Several English words originated from malleus, such as "malleable" and "mallet".
In Chapter 1, Malius sits in a room directly north of the Bake Sale in Forest. After speaking to the party for the first time, Malius tells them that they can "fix anything".
If the party brings the Broken Cake to them, Malius repairs it into a Top Cake, which the party can then return to Top Chef.
After being given all three Broken Key pieces, Malius combines them into the Door Key. They give it to the party before noting the "terrible energy" the key holds, saying that they had only fixed the key so the party would never have to use it.
If presented with both the Broken Key pieces and the Broken Cake, they only fix the Door Key. Talking to them again fixes the Top Cake.
At any time, Malius offers to "fix" the party, which means comically "massaging" them (to which Susie and Ralsei have a surprised reaction, and Kris has none), restoring everyone's HP. This appears to be redundant, given that the Bake Sale area already contains a SAVE Point.
In Chapter 2, Malius appears along with the other Card Kingdom Darkners in Castle Town. Malius can be found in the bakery, where they offer to either "fix" the party or chat. They no longer offer to fix items; instead, they have a new service of fusing items together.
In Chapter 4, Malius can be found at Top Bakery once again, but noticeably depressed. They provide their earlier services. When talked to, they reveal they have been trying their hand at breadmaking but have not been very successful due to gluten intolerance, hindering their progress towards new recipes.[1]
In Chapter 5, Malius can be found at Castle Town, just outside Top Bakery as a cure for their gluten intolerance. When spoken to, they offer to synthesize items for the player.
If Kris and Susie are chosen to play the hammer game at the Festival, they hit each other with hammers. In the end, Susie exclaims how that healed her, referencing Malius and their method of healing.
A Darkner resembling Malius named Ferroll appears as an NPC in the Cliffs and later Pink's room in Flower Kingdom.
- Malius is potentially a reference to the Hammerhead Bros. from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Both are master blacksmiths shown forging hammers using their heads in a similar fashion to Malius repairing for the party in Deltarune.
