Goulden Sam, Chapter 1

Goulden Sam (JP: ゴウルデン・サム) is a recurring species of Darkner who can first be encountered in Card Castle. They are circus wagons fashioned as prison cages.

Appearance

Goulden Sams are brightly colored red and gold wheeled circus wagons with tails and smiling lion faces. Each wagon is a cage that contains prisoners, but their lion heads can talk to the party as well. So far they have been encountered as prisons in Card Castle, Castle Town, and TV World. All of the wagons speak with parentheses surrounding their text.

Main story

Chapter 1

On the eastern end of the prison level in Card Castle, beyond the elevator, four Goulden Sams can be found. From left to right, the cages contain, respectively, the three Former Kings, the Jailed Puzzle Master, a Rudinn that refused to fight the party, and the Cage Animals. One of the wagons introduces themselves as "Goulden Sam".

The leftmost and the rightmost wagon appear in the throne room with their respective prisoners after the party defeats King in a pacifist route, again with unique dialogue.

Chapter 2

The leftmost and rightmost wagons reappear in the basement of Ralsei's castle, noting that the prison is really nice.

Chapter 3

The Goulden Sam area in TV World

Chapter 3 introduces two different variants of Goulden Sam: a silver and blue Suilver Sam and a miniature Goulden Son.

Multiple Goulden and Suilver Sams appear throughout TV World in the red carpeted studio areas the party travels through. They are again mostly used as cages to hold prisoners in, such as a Pippins selling TV Dinners for Dark Dollars (an unviable currency in TV World) or the party themselves after getting caught in a Zapper spotlight. However, they are completely ineffectual as cages, as the party can simply walk out from behind them. A few of them wrongfully comment about being the last of their kind.

A Goulden and a Suilver Sam can be found facing each other in one of the hidden TV Screen rooms, where upon interacting with them the party is asked to make "a moral choice" between Love and Hate. Choosing Love makes the two Sams move closer to kiss each other while "LOVE WINS" appears in rainbow text above their heads. Choosing Hate has the Goulden Sam crash into the Suilver Sam, pushing it out of the room, while "HATE WINS" appears in red text above its head. If five or more enemies have been violently defeated, the narrator declares that the player has "already chosen" and the Hate outcome plays out automatically.

Chapter 4

The two Goulden Sams serving as prison cages in Ralsei's castle are still present, unlike most of their previous occupants. Two of the Former Kings and the Cage Animals realized they could simply walk out the back of their cages and left, leaving the King of Diamonds as the lone (willing) prisoner. The King of Diamonds gives a hint to the party that they can talk to Goulden Sam's head. The Goulden Sam on the left plans on leaving as well.

Trivia

• The dialogue stated by the first Goulden Sam and Suilver Sam in TV World references the lyrics of "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)".
