Wafer, Chapter 4
Wafers are Darkners in Chapter 4 of Deltarune. They appear as NPCs in the Dark Sanctuary and 3rd Sanctuary, and as inanimate statues in the 2nd Sanctuary. They are based on wafers used in church and communion services.
Wafers are humanoid figures shrouded in long green robes reminiscent of shēnyī (深衣, "deep robes") worn by traditional Chinese philosophers. Usually, their arms are linked within the deep sleeves, a sign of respect commonly associated with Confucianism. Their heads resemble wafers with black diamond shaped eyes.
They are serene in nature and are devoted to worship towards their "ancestors", Organikks. However, the Wafers do not seem to actually enjoy the company of most of their "ancestors" when they come alive after completion of the 2nd Sanctuary, and much prefer their petrified forms to study and devote, with the large group observing a lone Organikk expressing outrage over their ancestor's statue being replaced.[1]
Numerous Wafers are present in the Dark Sanctuary.
In the dark maze, there is a Wafer on the southernmost path to the right who warns the party of the hostile Darkners.[2]
In the room with the "JOCKINGTON GROWS THE BEARD" prophecy tapestry, there is a Wafer there that recites an interpretation of the Jockington's beard prophecy.
In the room below the second piano playing puzzle is a Wafer standing next to a petrified Wicabel; they call the sealed-away Wicabels terrible and evil to hide the fact that they actually found them fun.
In the 2nd Sanctuary, the Wafers are petrified and immobile. Many petrified Wafers are present in the Gallery room. An Organikk philosopher can be seen admiring a Wafer, referring to them as their ancestor, before declaring that they should be more like the Wafer.
In the worship room, all of the Wafers worshipping the Organikk have been turned to stone while the Organikk is now alive. After defeating the Organikk without violence, they will say they are protecting the statues of their ancestors, lamenting it was a shame they could not have met them.
In the 3rd Sanctuary, Wafers are found alive coexisting with the 2nd Sanctuary Darkners.
