Gerson's letter to Alvin, as rewritten by Susie, Chapter 4

Gerson Boom (JP: ガーソン・ブーム) is a major returning character in Deltarune. He is the late father of Alvin and a historian-turned-fantasy fiction author who lived in Hometown. Gerson is renowned for authoring the Lord of the Hammer book series, which was inspired by the prophecy.[3]

In Chapter 4, Gerson's dust-covered hammer allows for his likeness to be recreated as a Darkner in the Dark Sanctuaries. Known simply as the Old Man (JP: 老人 / じいさん) in-game, he mentors Susie throughout the party's journey. As the Hammer of Justice, he also serves as the Shadow Crystal boss of the Chapter.

Profile

Appearance

As a Darkner, Gerson is an elderly dark-green tortoise with a dark green spot on the left side of his head. He has a yellow sclera and a black pupil, and his right eye is closed. He has pink hair, much like his son, and his long pink eyebrow and pointed goatee are usually visible. As seen when he becomes the Hammer of Justice, he has a long pink flowing ponytail hidden underneath his cap. The back of his shell is dark brown.

Gerson sports a brown flat cap, blazer, and trousers. He wears a loosely hanging light brown scarf around his neck, a white undershirt, and black shoes. At times, he occasionally walks with a green cane.

Personality

According to Alvin, Gerson was a "brave man, brilliant, and sharp". The writing for his Memorial Bench hints that he was welcoming, supportive, and encouraged others to pace themselves to find inspiration.[4] Since Gerson's writing was inspired by his dreams, it indicates he was open-minded to new and abstract ideas. From his former students, Gerson is said to be somewhat laid-back as a teacher. He was willing to compensate tardy students by allowing them to bring him leftover crepes from QC's Diner.[5][6]

As a Darkner, Gerson's personality is reminiscent of his Lightner self. He speaks casually and informally, often using colloquialisms such as g-dropping, which reflects his laid-back temperament. He also prefers to be open-minded, as he willingly takes wrong paths in favor of new ideas.[7]

Gerson's Darkner incarnation is also observant, friendly, considerate, and supportive. He has a sense of humor, and occasionally feigns ignorance with elder stereotypes to both cause mischief and to teach others. In general, Gerson enjoys sharing his wisdom and insights, and his teaching style is focused on using empathy to find the party's strengths, then indirectly helps by encouraging them to self reflect and consider different options.[8] As a Darkner, he is familiar with gameplay mechanics such as recruiting,[9] ACTing,[10] and indirectly helps the player by guiding the SOUL away from attacks.[11]

Etymology

"Gerson Boom" is a reference to the infamous Losers Semifinals match of Tacna 2014, a competitive Super Smash Bros. tournament.[12] In it, players Gerson and SuPeRbOoMfAn ("Boom" for short) favored the turtling defensive playstyle versus each other for over 52 minutes until Gerson mispositioned.[13] After losing a stock, Gerson was forced to approach to attack, causing him to lose the set. Gerson's son, Alvin, is in turn named after Alvin, a fellow Super Smash Bros. player and the winner of Tacna 2014.

Main story

History

Gerson originally worked as a smith, then eventually chose to be a writer. The latter brought Gerson to fame as an author. At first, Gerson became a historian and wrote history books. Further in his life, he decided to write stories to entertain his children[14] and published Lord of the Hammer, which became an award-winning fiction series.[15]

At some point, Gerson became a teacher in Hometown's only school.[16] His students include Green Fire and Flannel Demon, who both gave Gerson leftover crepes to excuse their unpunctuality.[5][6]

Some years prior to Deltarune, Gerson passed away. Per monster tradition, a hammer was also said to be buried in Gerson's grave,[17] though Alvin had secretly kept the hammer and Gerson's dust in his office in a glass case. A Memorial Bench with a quote from him was also added to the graveyard, and Alphys later replaced him as a teacher.[16] For a long time after Gerson's passing, Alvin continued to receive condolence letters from Gerson's fans.[1]

Chapter 1

In Chapter 1, Kris can find a signed copy of Gerson's The History of Humans and Monsters in the Dreemurr residence.[18]

After sealing Card Kingdom's Eastern Fountain, Kris can find an old drawing in the unused classroom. It is a yellowed drawing of Gerson, which was created and signed by a young Alvin.[19][20]

Kris can also find the first Lord of the Hammer book in the library, on the top-left bookshelf.

Gerson's tombstone can be found in Hometown's graveyard. His tombstone is on the far-left, depicting a hammer and bearing the epitaph "RENOWNED HISTORIAN, AUTHOR, AND TEACHER". Outside of the fencing is a Gerson Boom Memorial Bench.[4]

Chapter 2

After returning from the Cyber World, Kris can inspect the top-left bookshelf for Susie's reaction to the Lord of the Hammer series. She asks if Kris would tell her the "cool parts" from the series.[21]

Kris can find Alvin at Gerson's tombstone. They can inquire about Gerson and the hammer. Alvin comments that it is a shame Kris could not have Gerson as a teacher.[16] As Kris is about to leave the graveyard, they can hear Alvin talking to himself. He questions if Gerson was proud of him, and mentions the hammer.[22]

Chapter 4

At church, the sermon includes one of Gerson's passages on the prophecy, and Alvin praises his father's writing.[23] However, Kris falls asleep before the passage can be retold.

In the Dark Sanctuary, the Darkner recreation of Gerson first appears as a silhouette, where he quietly leaves after listening to the party reminisce in front of the Lancer glass tapestry. When the party later finds the tapestry depicting themselves, Gerson tosses a hammer at it. While in the darkness, whenever Kris steps on a yellow switch, Gerson's silhouette occasionally appears, and he walks on a different path.

After the party escapes the maze, Gerson properly meets them at the Lower Right. He flips the light switch with his cane, which causes the Titan Spawn to vanish. Gerson does not tell the party his name, and asks if they can escort him to his study, as he intends to finish his writing.[24] Susie refuses, but when Gerson inquires about what a Darkner is, she agrees to the task.[25]

Despite Susie's request, Gerson feigns being a slow walker. If Kris makes the party wait for him, Susie complains about his walking, and his walking animation speeds up as he continues to move at the same speed.[26] Gerson rushes ahead once Susie and Ralsei depart.

While accompanying the party, Gerson initially pretends to be a senile old man. However, as they progress, Gerson can offer some insight, and helps the party reach the study. In encounters, Kris can use the "OldMan" ACT to have Gerson assist. Versus Balthizard, Gerson feigns being confused, but tells the party to have fun before walking off-screen.[27] Via ACTing, he can raise Balthizard's Mercy by 50% per turn, and offers candy to everyone except Susie since she refused.

At the bookshelves, Gerson claims he wants to read a "book", which actually opens the door. When Kris inspects the stool, Gerson asks for Susie's help, though she insists Ralsei assists instead. He pauses when Ralsei offers to help, before asking for Susie's help again. Gerson is appreciative of Susie's aid when she puts the green book on his head.

If Kris waits at the tapestry depicting the party at world's end, Gerson muses in thought about the prophecy.[28] He breaks it when the party ascends the staircase, which reveals a hidden path behind it. Gerson chuckles and claims he is clumsy, and that he could not see where he was going due to them following that prophecy.[29] After Susie and Ralsei leave, Kris can accuse Gerson of breaking the tapestry:

  • Choosing "Don't like prophecies" causes Gerson to state his belief again. He emphasizes that the words are "too bright", and suggests they go "between the lines".[30]
  • Claiming he broke the tapestry on accident, or to annoy Susie causes Gerson to simply admit he is flattered.

Outside the study, Susie asks him where the study is. Gerson feigns being lost, and intentionally goes left twice, which both lead to the solution to the second piano playing puzzle. Gerson admits to Kris that the path was incorrect, though he believes going the wrong way gives "better ideas".[7] He then asks Kris's opinion on which path to take:

  • "Back Down" makes Gerson comment that there is no harm to this, though the world may change when moving forward.[31]
  • "Further left" causes Gerson to respect Kris for taking a new path. This leads to Gerson walking on a hidden glass path, and Kris gaining 1 max HP.
  • "Susie" causes Gerson to praise Kris for being a good friend. Gerson then comments on Kris's tone, and either assumes they have good adventures, or reassures that Susie trusts Kris.
  • "Nowhere" causes Gerson to assume they will get there eventually, and laughs at them rushing to it. On the Weird Route, Gerson instead reassures Kris due to their "peculiar" tone.[32]
Gerson battle spare.gif

Once Kris opens the piano gate, Gerson is relieved, and mentions the nearby Guei wants to go through. In this battle, Gerson can drop his cane in the bullet board, which indicates where bullets will not appear.[11] A second "OldMan" ACT causes Ralsei to explain they intend to SPARE the Gueis to Gerson, to which he does instead.[9] Post-battle, Gerson invites the trio to his study, which also hosts his shop. When Susie refuses, Gerson acknowledges this, and thanks the party before leaving.

Inside the study, Gerson greets them as he focuses on writing his personal letter. Kris can then converse with him. Gerson can have Susie to proofread his letter, which only has the word "The". He can also mention his shop, and that the Knight entered the locked door. For the latter, Gerson suggests going to East Belltower to open it, though he alludes that ClaimbClaws are needed, and suggests the Northwest Library. If Kris has read "Legend of the Magic Axe", Ralsei can ask Gerson about it. Gerson assumes Susie is interested, and decides to "talk to himself about it" and suggests the trio searches around.

After the Jackenstein fight, Gerson appears after Susie walks away to allow Ralsei to heal Jackenstein. Gerson, however, helps Susie gain confidence in her healing by provoking her.[33] He then asks Susie to heal his finger, as he claims to have accidentally pricked it with his pen. When Susie tries to heal Gerson, he drops his letter and bends down to pick it up, causing Susie to miss him and accidentally heal Jackenstein instead. While Susie converses with Ralsei and Jackenstein, Gerson disappears shortly after.

If the player makes it through the second Dark Maze, Gerson turns on the lights and invites the trio to have a tea party with him, during which he is delighted to hear about their adventures.

From this point up until the Fountain is closed, the party can start and complete the optional Golden Piano side quest, which culminates in a boss fight against Gerson's Hammer of Justice form.

Gerson tries to continue writing his letter in a different location, and Susie finds him while trying to obtain a music sheet for the piano.[34] Susie shares with him that he is the first person who taught her without making her feel stupid, and that it really means a lot to her.[8] They share a laugh, and Gerson thanks her. He then has Susie copy down the notes so that Kris can play them to open the door to the fountain.

When the party is about to leave the study to seal the Fountain, Gerson calls Susie over. He asks her to memorize the letter he finished, then to rewrite it.[35] Susie initially refuses, arguing that she would not remember it correctly, but Gerson tells her that the words don't matter as long as the message is the same. Susie then complies.

Upon sealing the Dark Sanctuary Fountain, Susie, while searching Alvin's office for the code to the church hall's doors, finds a glass case containing some dust, a hammer, and a photo of Gerson.[36] Susie and Kris realize that the dust is actually Gerson's remains, and that he was only temporarily revived by the Fountain.[37] Despite this, Susie writes the letter for him.[38] After a fruitless search for the door code, Susie decides to create a new Dark Fountain so that they can enter the Dark World and ask Gerson for the code.[2]

In the 2nd Sanctuary, Kris and Susie find that Gerson's study is abandoned. In the hidden room where the JusticeAxe was kept, they pursue what they assume to be Gerson, who silently leaves them. When Susie and Kris catch up to him, he relentlessly attacks. Shortly after, Ralsei appears and destroys "Gerson", revealing that it was a statue in his image that had become animated in Susie's Dark World. Ralsei explains Gerson cannot exist in the Dark World she created.[39]

Since the Dark Sanctuary and 3rd Sanctuary shared the same darkness, Gerson is able to manifest as himself once again in the 3rd Sanctuary. As the Hammer of Justice, Gerson appears during the party's battle against a Titan.

Gerson supports the party by healing them if they are down, and performs DualBuster in tandem with Susie.[40] His assistance allows Kris and Susie to enter the Titan's body and seal the Dark Fountain it is part of, destroying it.

After the Titan's defeat, Susie tries to search for Gerson, though he has disappeared.

Relationships

Alvin

As a Darkner, Gerson is motivated by his remorse to try to write an apology letter to Alvin.[24] He tries to write the letter in his study, but ends up relocating once to focus on completing it.[34] When the party prepares to close the Fountain, Gerson entrusts Susie to relay his letter.[35][38]

Creation and development

Gerson artwork concept.png
Concept art of Gerson by Gigi D.G.

In early 2016, Toby Fox created Hammer of Justice (Piano Sketch), an early arrangement of the Hammer of Justice theme.[41]

In the UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary Stream, Toby confirms that the drawing in the unused classroom is of Gerson.[20]

During Chapter 4's development, Toby wanted the Dark Sanctuary to be a "nonlinear" dungeon akin to ones in The Legend of Zelda series, but revised the idea in favor of properly implementing Gerson's story scenes.[42]

While the Old Man is not named as Gerson in-game, much of the filenames internally refers to his assets, such as sprites, locations, and effects, as gerson, oldman and hammer_of_justice. This includes his themes,[43][44] sprites, and script.[45][46][47]

In the UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary Stream, Toby admits the "I'm old!", phrase in the OldMan ACT is a phrase he made up for another middle school project.[48] While this could potentially refer to an earlier, private project, this aligns with the Starman Senior boss in Toby's first EarthBound fangame, Arn's Winter Quest, whose sprite has a speech bubble with the words "I'm OLD!" next to it. The idea of an enemy with an "I'm Old" speech bubble was reused for the Amalgamate in Radiation's Halloween Hack, and was even considered for Undertale at one point.[49]

Outside of Deltarune

Gerson first appeared in Undertale, where he is a minor character that resides in Waterfall. He was initially a hero to monsterkind, which earned him the "The Hammer of Justice" nickname. At some point, he later chose to tend to a shop area in a cave, which depicts the Delta Rune. He often laughs with a "Wa ha ha!", speaks informally, and is occasionally forgetful.

Several of Gerson's lines when purchasing an item are also lifted directly from his counterpart's item purchase dialogue in Undertale.[50][51][52]

    • [After defeating the Hammer of Justice]
      • Enjoy yourselves! You got a lot ahead of you...

Trivia

  • Gerson's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1.
  • When Gerson walks on-screen during an encounter, the encounter theme, From Now On (Battle 2), temporarily pauses.
  • Gerson's life has many similarities with the late J. R. R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings series. Both were religious-minded historians and teachers before becoming acclaimed fantasy authors, with Gerson's series "Lord of the Hammer" being a likely nod to Tolkien's series, and both left their work unfinished at the time of their death. Unlike Boom's son Alvin, Tolkien's son Christopher continued to edit and release his father's Unfinished Tales and letters until his death in 2020.
3rd Sanctuary location prophecy axe.png
The visual for the prophecy mentioning Gerson, as seen in-game
  • An unused glass tapestry of the prophecy mentioning Gerson, reading "AXE CARVED BY THE TORTOISE'S GRAND HAMMER" and accompanied by a picture of an axe, is present in the game files.
    • While the full version of the unused prophecy tapestry does not appear in-game, the visual of the axe can be found among the floating prophecy tapestries at the start of the 3rd Sanctuary.
  • Gerson's acclaim and succession by Alphys as a teacher after his death are reminiscent of W.D. Gaster, who is stated to have had "irreplaceable" brilliance[53] and was similarly succeeded by Alphys as the royal scientist after his disappearance. In both cases, said acclaim is implied to have put considerable pressure on their successors.[16][54]

He always managed to put into words what we could never quite say ourselves.
We shall never know the pieces of the prophecy lost to time.
    Alvin, Chapter 4
  24. 1 2 You wouldn't mind walking me back to my study, wouldja?
Got something I gotta finish writing, y'see...
    Gerson, Chapter 4
  25. Susie: Yeah, uh, no. We're kinda in a hurry here.
Susie: We can't just babysit every random Darkner we meet.
Gerson: Ah, I see, I see. Good enough reason, that one.
    Susie: So anyway, we'll be...
    Gerson: What's a Darkner, anyhoo?
    Susie: You mean you don't...
Susie: (Kris, if this guy's not a Darkner, then...)
    Susie and Gerson, Chapter 4
  26. Susie: Hey, if we're gonna have to watch you...
Susie: ... Can you walk ANY FASTER!?
    Gerson: Of course, miss!
Susie and Gerson, if Kris waits for him, Chapter 4
  27. Gerson: Hm, what's all this now?
Susie: H-hey!! We're fighting!! Get out of here!!

    Gerson and Susie, Chapter 4
  28. Hmm! The prophecy! A very nice fairytale, that...Gerson, Chapter 4
  29. Well, we were following that Prophecy so closely...
    I couldn't see quite where I was going, geh-heh!!
    Gerson, Chapter 4
  30. I jus' think, those words shine a bit too bright.
A path so blue, it's all you can see.
So I say... why don't we go between the lines?
    It's darker there... Geheh... geheheh!
Gerson, "Don't like prophecies", Chapter 4
  31. There's no harm in lookin' back. You mighta missed something.
But, when you finally turn forward once again...
Don't be shocked if the world has changed.
    Gerson, "Back Down", Chapter 4
  32. Your words just now, 's got a peculiar ring to 'em.
I can tell... you're havin' some relationship trouble, ain't ya.
I've seen it all, y'know. At your age...
If things go cold, you might think your whole world's endin'.
But y'know, things go on. You'll grow up...
Just keep livin'. Everything will be all right, sooner or later...
Gerson, "Nowhere", Weird Route, Chapter 4
  33. Susie: I'll never be as good as Ralsei, so what's the point?
Susie: So everyone can see how... bad I am?
Susie: I should just stick to what I'm good for.
Susie: Y'know... uh... hurting people... magic.
    Gerson: Hm. Is that so.
Gerson: Didn't take you for a purple bellied coward.
Susie: Coward...? Hey, what do you mean by that!?
Gerson: You're afraid of making some little green sparkles.
    Gerson and Susie, Chapter 4
  34. 1 2 Gerson: Just came here for some peace 'n quiet to write my letter.
    Susie: Your letter...
Susie: Y'know this is a dream, right? Soon, it's gonna end...
Susie: Then everything here... this place... that letter...
    Gerson: ... you don't say.
Susie: Yeah. But... I'll still be here when you wake up.
    Gerson and Susie, Chapter 4
  35. 1 2 Gerson: Good timing! I just about finished my letter.
Gerson: Ya mind deliverin' it for me?
    Susie: ... deliver it?
Susie: Like I said, when we wake up, it'll be gone, so...
Gerson: Yep, that's what I mean.
Gerson: This letter... just have a read of it for me.
Gerson: Then, when you wake up...
Gerson: ... write it all back down, okay?

For a moment, it must've like... revived him.
    ...
... But, I think he knew...
I think he knew he was...
    Susie, Chapter 4
  38. 1 2 Kris, he wanted me to write a letter.
A letter to "Alvin"... I think that's... this pastor guy.
    Susie, Chapter 4
  39. Susie: A... a statue...? Then... the old man...?
Ralsei: He's... not in this world, sadly.
Ralsei: Darkners patterned after the memory of a loved one...
Ralsei: Tend to only appear in very specific darknesses.
Ralsei: ... even if we tried to bring him to Castle Town, he...

  41. (By the way, "Hammer of Justice" is another song I started making right at the beginning of 2016... I think the final arrangement is pretty good, but since I didn't create it for seven years, the original piano sketch is the main version that I remember)CHAPTER 3 and 4 LOOK BACK! 42. Another change involved the layout of the Dark Sanctuary. Originally, I wanted to create a giant nonlinear interconnected dungeon, kind of like something from Zelda. However, the result of having a nonlinear structure, made it difficult to have a linear series of story events… this caused the implementation of the Old Man to feel really weak. So the structure was changed to be linear just like everything else (lol)CHAPTER 3 and 4 LOOK BACK! (Fox, Toby, December 18, 2025.) toby.fangamer.com.
