Alvin

From Deltarune Wiki

I know. I do not exactly have a "flair" for entertainment.
That's why I don't write my own sermons. Or... anything, anymore.

Alvin when complimented on his sermon, Chapter 4

Alvin (JP: アルビン師) is a character in Deltarune. He is the son of Gerson and is Hometown's local pastor for the church.

Profile

Appearance

Alvin is a monster turtle with green skin. He has long pink hair, pink eyebrows, and a long pink goatee. He wears a blue robe that depicts the Delta Rune on its front, has a large green shell on his back, and wears black shoes. Alvin's sprite depicts him with closed eyes, with both of his hands clasped together.

Personality

Alvin is kind and thoughtful. He speaks in a gentle manner, often periodically pausing while conversing. Alvin deeply cares about the well-beings of others, and encourages people to share their thoughts with him. Alvin possesses a strong belief in the power of spirituality and community, as he often refers to faith, tradition, and holds the prophecy's Angel in high regard.

Alvin has some interest in writing, though he is self-conscious of "tarnishing" his father's legacy.[2]

Alvin appears to have a quiet sense of humor, such as when recalling the time when Asriel begged for forgiveness over his "sins" of "dropping the lizard in a pit" in a video game.

Etymology

Owing to the fact Gerson Boom's name is a reference to the Super Smash Bros. tournament Tacna 2014, known for an infamous match where players Gerson and SuPeRbOoMfAn "turtled" each other for over 52 minutes,[3] Alvin's name is a reference to Super Smash Bros. player Alvin. The player Alvin is Peruvian, much like the player Gerson, is widely regarded as the best Super Smash Bros. player in Peru, and was the winner of Tacna 2014.

Main story

History

Prior to the events of Deltarune, Gerson passed away, leaving Alvin to carry his father's legacy. Alvin serves as the pastor at Hometown's church, hosting sermons and leading a choir. The Dreemurr family frequently attended, with Kris usually drinking fruit juice instead of participating. Asriel would visit Alvin often to confess his sins; a notable one being the time where he tearfully pleaded for forgiveness over dropping a lizard into a pit in a video game.

Chapter 1

In Chapter 1, Alvin can be found standing in front of the church after Kris seals the Eastern Fountain. If asked about Fruit Juice, he recalls Kris calling the juice "sick" and asks them to come to service if they want some, mentioning that the choir has sounded thinner since Asriel went away. He invites Kris to sing in the choir or "participate to any extent" instead of just attending for the fruit juice. When bidding Kris farewell, he wishes that they might find the words they seek and that "the Angel's power light your way".

Chapter 2

In Chapter 2, Alvin can be found paying respects to his late father in the graveyard. He reflects on the things Gerson has done in his lifetime and laments that Kris was not able to have him as a teacher, and also shows concern for Alphys as Gerson's replacement. Alvin also speaks fondly of Asriel and remembers the many times he came over to confess his "sins" over a video game.

When Kris walks away, Alvin quietly mumbles to himself, asking if his father was proud of him or not, and if it is right for "this hammer" to do something he leaves unspecified.

Chapter 4

In Chapter 4, Alvin gives a sermon at the church.

Afterwards, he can be asked about the shelter, which he warns Kris to stay away from.

Alvin has left the church by the time the Dark Fountains there are created, not appearing in the Dark World. It is revealed that he keeps his father's dust and hammer in his study, which allows for Gerson to be temporarily resurrected in the Dark World. Gerson gives Susie a message to pass on to Alvin, which she later writes on a paper in Alvin's study. The message tells Alvin that his father was proud of him and encourages him to follow his dreams and write his own stories.

Chapter 5

Alvin shows up in the Church haunted house dressed as a vampire, appearing with Catti and Alphys during the Festival. He leaves remarks about the state the church was left in after the events of Chapter 4, but also claims he'll try making his own sermon for the next service.[4]

Creation and development

Toby Fox has stated that the unused classroom's drawing in the school is Alvin's drawing of Gerson.[5][6]
