Sheary, Chapter 5

Sheary (JP: シザリー Shizarī) is a scissor Darkner from Card Kingdom in Chapter 1. Groups of them can be encountered in the Sheary room in Forest and Floor 4F of Card Castle. They later appear in Chapter 5 as a fightable enemy located in the Garden of the Flower Kingdom.

Profile

Appearance

Shearies are tall, black-and-white figures resembling a pair of scissors with bladed arms fanned out at the top and a narrow, pointed body. When traversing through areas, they are shown spinning and swaying in a dance-like motion.

Personality

Shearies are proud of their topiary work, becoming aggressive when it is vandalized. They have a unique style of speaking, which is characterized by short incomplete sentences and use of hyphens between words and syllables.

Etymology

"Sheary" is derived from shear, a tool similar to scissors, along with the feminine name Sherry.

Their Japanese name,「シザリー」 (Shizarī), is derived from「シザー」 (shizā), the Japanese romanization of the English word "scissors".

Main story

Chapter 1

Shearies are first encountered in a room consisting of various squared paths in Forest. From there, groups of them roam among the drifting stars that only become visible when Kris draws near them. In the first half of the forest maze, a row of Shearies appear as obstacles Kris and Ralsei must bypass.

Four Shearies are later found in Card Castle, guarding the upper area of Floor 4F in a clockwise formation. Getting hit by a Sheary deals 15 damage to the party.[6] If Kris interacts with a Sheary like they would with any other NPC, a unique sound effect plays with a randomized pitch each time.[7]

Chapter 5

In the Garden, after obtaining the watering can, the player can access the puzzle room with scissors. An umbrella at the end of the first corridor explains that Shearies are the creators of the topiaries found throughout the Garden, and warns the party to avoid interfering with their work.[8]Behind the umbrella, a Sheary can be seen trimming a Ralsei-shaped topiary. If Kris says her work "Looks bad", she trims it into a Kris-shaped topiary and beheads it, but if they say it "Looks amazing", the Sheary trims it to give Ralsei a big head, then reverts it to normal. In the same room, two Shearies are cutting a large topiary of Flowery carrying Asgore. The player must lead the scissors into the path of the topiary to progress, cutting it down in the process and causing the Shearies to attack the party in anger.

Flower Castle also contains four Shearies:

Attacks

  • A pair of scissors appears to the right of the bullet board, cutting it in half soon after, which causes each half of the bullet board to move back and forth independently in a similar manner to one of Tenna's attacks. After this, 4 groups of 4 scissors appear: 3 small scissors falling straight down or diagonally left or right, and one large scissors moving left or right along the top or bottom half of the bullet box.

Available ACTs

ACT performed with SusieACT performed with RalseiSalonCut

Relaxed cut

Initiates a cutting minigame where the player must cut a shape as accurately as possible. The dotted outline of one of three shapes appears: a circle, square, or keyhole. When using any version of this ACT, the first turn will always show a circle, the second a square, and the third a keyhole. Subsequent uses will choose a random shape.[9]

A pair of scissors appears at the bottom of the shape. UP makes the scissors cut forward, producing a red line, while LEFT and RIGHT change its direction. The player has 460 frames[10] (~15.3 seconds) to cut as closely along the dotted line as possible. The accuracy of this cut is proportional to the amount of MERCY Sheary will receive. Invisible small node objects are placed along the borders of the shape,[11] and a large node object is placed on top of each small one.[12] Each shape awards varying MERCY based on how many nodes the scissors' red line comes into contact with (see below).[13] In any version of the ACT, a score of 99 will instead yield 100% MERCY.[14]

The ACT ends when the scissors' red line overlaps with itself or when it touches the borders of the battlefield, in which case the flavor text states "Truancy. Failure." and no MERCY is awarded.

When using this ACT only, Kris, Susie and Ralsei will all wear nurse outfits and hold scissors. During any version of the minigame, the player can move the scissors over Susie or Ralsei, which changes their sprites into one of the variants in the S-Action and R-Action ACTs. If the scissors are moved over Kris, they will instead briefly display their hurt animation, appearing to block the scissors.

Despite the patch notes for Chapter 5 Version 0.0.243 mentioning the addition of a failsafe that ends the cutting minigame after some time passes without initial player input, such a function did not exist in the game's code.[15] However, since the Version 0.0.244 update,[16] the function was correctly implemented to begin ticking down the timer after 30 seconds without input.[17]

ACT performed with SusieValueCut

Cut quick!

Identical to SalonCut, except the player has 390 frames[18] (13 seconds) instead. If the square shape appears, the player will have 40 additional frames[19] (~1.3 seconds).

HyperCut

Cut FAST!!!

Identical to SalonCut, except the player has 260 frames[20] (~8.6 seconds) instead. If the square shape appears, the player will have 40 additional frames[21] (~1.3 seconds).

Regardless of performance (excluding truancy), a single use of HyperCut can yield no less than 25% MERCY[22] and no more than 99% MERCY.[23]

S-Action

Increases MERCY by 40%. Susie will change sprites to one of three variants during the ACT.

R-Action

Increases MERCY by 40%. Ralsei will change sprites to one of seven variants during the ACT. There are three variants for if he is wearing his hat, and four for if he is not.

Trivia

  • The ribbon that can be worn by Susie when using S-Action is the RedRibbon, as seen by her dialogue portrait after Flowery gives her one to wear just outside the diner in the Garden. The design is identical to the ribbon worn by Reimu Hakurei, the main protagonist of the Touhou Project series.
  • The yellow dotted hat that can be worn by Ralsei when using R-Action is that worn by Ran Yakumo, also from Touhou Project.
    • This may be a NetskieHat, given the item's description and shop text's reference to Ran.
  • The green mohawk haircut Ralsei can receive using R-Action without his hat is the same hairstyle he has during the Rock Video minigame introduced in Chapter 3.
  • Sheary's attack is named obj_sheary_smashcut_attack in the game's code, further connecting it to Tenna's attack, obj_tenna_smashcut_attack.
  • The flavor text "Sheary looks ready to shear sheep." when tired is likely a reference to the Western practice of counting sheep to fall asleep.
