Seam on Lightners, Chapter 1

Lightners (JP: ライトナー) are a class of beings in Deltarune. They are people that live in the Light World, as opposed to the Darkners that inhabit the Dark Worlds and plants, who exist in different states in both worlds. All Lightners depicted so far live in Hometown.

Lightners can generally be divided into two groups: humans and monsters, each with different physiology, abilities, and culture.

Characteristics

According to Queen, monster and human Lightners have the power of determination and the ability to create Dark Fountains. A book titled "The History of Humans and Monsters" exists, though it is unknown what its contents are.

Known Lightners partake in seasonal events, such as Halloween and Christmas.

In a Dark World, monster Lightners can use MAGIC. As allies, Susie and Noelle can perform spells that range from emitting projectiles, such as Rude Buster and IceShock, or heal a party member with spells such as Heal Prayer and Susie's healing. Berdly can summon miniature tornadoes, and use his halberd to attack with a line of scattered arrow bullets. Human Lightners cannot perform spells.

Lightners have black and white Undertale-style dialogue portraits, in contrast to Darkner's dialogue portraits being depicted in full color.

Biology

The biology between humans and monster Lightners still appears to be distinct as it is in Undertale. From the questions the innkeeper's child in Hometown asks Kris, monster Lightners apparently lack a circulatory system and a skeleton. However, at the end of Chapter 4, Susie's fist can be seen bleeding after she smashes a section of the prophecy. Whether or not she is a unique case is unclear.

History

According to stories told by Card Kingdom's Darkners such as King and Seam, the Lightners were once the protectors of the Darkners, before they left them alone in the shadows. Seam explains that Lightners were seen as the "Gods", "protectors", "creators", and "those who gave [Darkners] purpose". One day, however, the Darkners were locked away in the Dark World, and the Lightners were never seen by them again. During the final battle with King, he rants about how the Lightners abandoned him and his kingdom. King then goes on to say that the Knight has provided the purpose that the Lightners took from the Darkners, and that with the Knight, the Light World shall be brought under the Darkners' rule.

Creation and development

In the Undertale 6th anniversary stream, Toby Fox revealed that he considered making everyone in the Light World humans, only to become monsters in the Dark World.
