Jackenstein's pumpkin, Chapter 4
Jackenstein's pumpkin is a Darkner NPC that appears in the Dark Sanctuary during Chapter 4 of Deltarune. It is owned by Jackenstein[2] and appears during and after his battle.
Jackenstein's pumpkin is a simple black jack-o'-lantern with a red outline. Its body is able to elongate at will. Its mouth is usually smiling, but it can spin upside down to form a frown. The pumpkin's color can change based on its expression. For example, when stunned or crying, its color changes to yellow.
There exist several pumpkins that appear to be distinct from Jackenstein's pumpkin, including small red pumpkins that appear in a horde, and a polite pumpkin with a simpler facial expression.
Jackenstein's pumpkin is impatient, often stating that Kris is "TAKING TOO LONG" during attacks. It chases the SOUL around during these attacks as a way of speeding them up. It seems to like jokes and expresses endearment over the SOUL wearing a tutu.
Jackenstein's polite pumpkin expresses similar impatience to the main pumpkin, but it is significantly more polite and chases the SOUL more slowly.
Jackenstein's pumpkin speaks in a distinct speech pattern. While it seems to retain Jackenstein's misspellings and full capitalization, its dialogue is rendered word by word instead of character by character to sync up with its voice lines. When the ScaredyCat ACT is active, Jackenstein's dialogue is faster.
Jackenstein's pumpkins appear as an attack during Jackenstein's battle, chasing the party whenever they appear.
After defeating Jackenstein, the party can find the main pumpkin near the drop to the Dark Zone, even after Jackenstein falls to his presumed death in the 3rd Sanctuary. Once there, they can choose to tell it a joke or tell it a story.
If the party chooses to tell the pumpkin a joke, it laughs before the punchline can be said. There are four possible jokes, two told by Ralsei and two told by Susie. These jokes are as follows, selected at random until all jokes have been told:
- [Ralsei] Why shouldn't you fight with a broken pencil?
- [Susie] What's worse than Ralsei in a trash can?
- [Susie] Hey, wanna donut? I mean, a hurtz one?
- [Ralsei] Ummm, knock knock!
If the party chooses to tell the pumpkin a story, Ralsei attempts to tell a story about a lonely prince. The pumpkin complains that Ralsei is "TAKING TOO LONG" and jumps into the Dark Zone, at which point it permanently disappears.
Jackenstein's pumpkins have simple, bitcrushed voice lines that they say whenever they appear.

- The line "YOUR TAKING TOO LONG" and the jack-o'-lantern's color could be a reference to the Strong Bad Email episode "video games",[4] in which Strong Bad imagines a video game featuring a red-and-black version of his face that speaks in similar broken grammar (i.e., "YOUR HEAD ASPLODE").
- The screams of fear used during the Unleash ACT reference Mario's recurring "Mamma mia" line from Super Mario 64.
