Sweet Cap'n Cakes, Chapter 2

Sweet Cap'n Cakes (JP: スイート・キャップ・ケーキ Sweet Cap Cake) are a group of music-themed Darkners from the Cyber World, individually named Sweet (JP: スイート), Cap'n (JP: キャップ Cap), and K_K (JP: K_K). Although they initially oppose the party and fight them as a miniboss in Cyber Field, afterwards they become allies in the fight against Queen.

Shop

After their battle, the trio appear as shopkeepers in Cyber Field. Their wares are:

Profile

Appearance

Sweet Cap'n Cakes are described as being "young men". Each member appears to be based on a different kind of music player.

Sweet

Sweet is made up of two mono speakers. Sweet's "head" speaker has a speaker cap that functions as an eye, with one gold iris and pupil. Solid black arms with yellow gloves extend from the body speaker. Sweet's clothes consist of a black hat which faces forward, a pair of dark gray headphones with gold accents, black pants with two gold buttons, or possibly volume dials, black shoes with gold laces and blue soles, and white socks with gold trim.

Cap'n

Cap'n's head is a cassette player. He wears yellow headphones with music notes (eighth notes) on each earphone. He has a purple cap which he wears backward, sunglasses, and a blue short sleeved hoodie with a purple bandana. He, like Sweet, has solid black arms and yellow gloves. He wears black pants with a purple belt, and purple shoes with white laces and soles. Unlike the other two, who have four fingers on each hand, Cap'n has five.

K_K (Cakes)

K_K is, as he mentions, a CD player. He appears to be made up of two, stacked on top of each other, his head is green, with gold eyes and a purple handle. He has black, green striped arms and "spine" extending from the white boombox that is his body. He wears green pants with a belt looped through it and black boots, with gold laces and green soles. His hands are green, with gold bracelets on both of his wrists.

Personality

The trio are portrayed as young rebels that oppose the Queen's plans, but are often distracted by dancing and arguing over what they should do. The band loves music to the point that they rebel against the Queen for banning most music. If someone else starts dancing, the band also dances with them as well.

Etymology

Sweet Cap'n Cakes's name is a reference to Sweet Cuppin' Cakes, a surreal cartoon that exists within the universe of the animated internet series, Homestar Runner. The trio's main song, When I Get Mad I Dance Like This, is inspired by a Sweet Cuppin' Cakes character, a keyboard-headed Strong Bad that plays music based on the Casio VL-Tone 29-Key Keyboard's demo song and dances around when they get angry.

Main story

Chapter 2

Sweet is often seen throughout Cyber Field attacking Kris with piano tile-like attacks, while Cap'n and K_K are seen selling CD Bagels and trying to confound the party on the teacup rides.

Near the end of Cyber Field, Sweet, Cap'n, and K_K reveal themselves as rebels against the Queen, challenging the party due to believing that they had assisted Queen in capturing Noelle. The gang argues about what they should do with the Lightners before starting to dance. The party begins to walk away, only to be caught by the rebels and forced into an encounter.

Sweet, Cap'n, and K_K can be danced with during the fight. If the party uses Dance or DanceX after some time or Kris is knocked out during the fight, Susie starts wanting to dance herself. However, Ralsei says that only Kris could allow Susie to dance, as Kris's special ability is to ACT. Susie says that she isn't stupid enough to not know how to dance herself, and learns S-Action, allowing her to dance. Ralsei learns R-Action against his will, and is also able to dance.

When the party makes all the enemies dance, the group has a short dance party with them, with fireworks spelling out "Battle Won" at the end, after which Sweet, Cap'n, and K_K continue dancing. Susie says that the fight is over, and Sweet and K_K are surprised thinking that they lost. Cap'n, however, says that their dance moves beat the party, and that they were so good, that they joined "the good side". The party and rebels become friends before the latter fly off on their rocket-powered turntable.

After the battle, Sweet, Cap'n, and K_K can sometimes be seen flying along with the heroes as they progress through Cyber Field.

In their shop in Cyber Field, Sweet, Cap'n, and K_K reveal that they rebelled because Queen banned all music except for reverse diss-tracks (songs that praised Queen and said negative things about the singer) and noise music. They also reveal that Queen used to be kind but became cruel after another Dark Fountain formed due to the Knight.

In their "Junk Work" dialogue at the shop, it is implied that Spamton attempted to get them to sneak into Queen's Mansion in order to obtain the EmptyDisk, but they turned him down. The dialogue also implies that Rouxls Kaard used their services to repair the Thrash Machine. Later dialogue implies that Berdly got them to assemble the golden statues of himself and Queen.

After Queen deploys her GIGA Queen robot, Sweet, Cap'n, K_K, and the rest of the recruited Darkners transform the Thrash Machine for the party to fight against GIGA Queen.

If enough enemies are recruited, Sweet Cap'n Cakes move their shop to Castle Town and can play music on request. They can be found in the training area.

Chapter 4

After the town square expands, their shop moves to beside Seam's shop, though it is inaccessible since all its occupants are elsewhere. Cap'n can be found at the Dojo, which is now the "Love Dojo". He has changed the venue's music to Pushing Buddies to sway the "madamoizels".

If enough enemies are recruited to play Castle Funk, Sweet and K_K appear the newly transformed Cat Cafe, performing on stage alongside Tasque Manager and a Shadowguy. Otherwise, they do not appear in Castle Town.

Creation and development

Sweet Cap'n Cakes are designed by the guest artist Nelnal. They were originally three designs proposed for one character, but were changed into three separate characters.

In battle

Attacks

Four attacks are used in battle. All of these come in sync with the background music.

• Circle-shaped bullets that leave a trace behind them fall from the top, "spoken" from the drawings of the band members.
• Musical note-shaped bullets fly from the speakers on both sides of the bullet board, moving slightly downwards.
• Vertical wave-shaped bullets leaving a trail fly from the speakers on both sides of the bullet board.
• Wave-shaped bullets fire in an explosion from the speakers on both sides of the bullet board.

Strategy

When one band member's HP drops to 0, they spend a turn drinking K_K's milk to fully heal up. The milk image is reused from K. Round's battle. To win the battle, one needs to make all band members dance.

At first, the battle appears unwinnable due to only Kris having access to the Dance(X) ACT, which only works on one enemy, and all the enemies snap out of dancing in no more than 2 turns. After a few failed attempts or Kris is down, both Susie and Ralsei are revived if they're down, and Susie questions why only Kris gets to ACT. After a dialogue Susie gains access to S-Action before forcing Ralsei to gain access to R-Action. If Kris is down at the time, special dialogue plays about Ralsei not needing to revive Kris to dance. It is then possible to make 3 party members dance with 3 different enemies in one turn and win the battle.

After S-Action and R-Action are learned, the 3 band members also no longer snap out of dancing, making it possible to win even if one party member spends 3 turns to dance with each band member individually.

If Dance(X) is used on the first turn on anyone but Sweet, Kris always takes damage from their first attack instead of the target being random. This allows Kris to be consistently downed on the first turn, making the fight faster.

Trivia

Sweet's unused overworld walking sprites

• Their relation to each other is unknown/up to interpretation, as stated by Nelnal.
  • In a tweet that has since been deleted, guest artist Nelnal referred to Sweet Cap'n Cakes as brothers. However, Nelnal later recanted this statement.
• In the Autumn 2023 Undertale/Deltarune Newsletter, Nelnal states that the trio's favorite musical genres consist of dubstep for Sweet, electro for K_K, and hip-hop for Cap'n.
• In the game's files, Sweet has a set of unused overworld walking sprites. These sprites cannot be seen in the game as Sweet only uses a set of battle and NPC sprites.
  • Interestingly, there are sprites of Sweet walking diagonally, which is unusual. There are no sprites for him walking upward diagonally, so it may have been scrapped early on in development.

K_K's sprite appearing before the GIGA Queen battle

• When appearing in the cutscene before fighting GIGA Queen, K_K's sprite appears to be slightly stretched and blurry.
• Unlike Sweet and K_K, Cap'n does not have a sprite for being hurt or snapping out of dancing.
• Sweet Cap'n Cakes's unique dialogue icons closely resemble the icons used in Arn's Winter Quest, Toby Fox's first EarthBound fan game.
• Sweet bears a slight resemblance to Noisemaster from the webcomic Cucumber Quest by Gigi D.G., which Toby Fox has composed unofficial music for.
