FOLLOW THE WHITE CLOAK

Text in the Ice Palace, Chapter 3

The White Cloak[2] (JP: しろいマント) is a character in Chapter 3 of Deltarune. She is a pixelated representation of Noelle that only appears in the Original Game, within the Ice Palace on the Island Board. She mirrors Noelle's role on Chapter 2's Weird Route, trailing HERO_SWORD and casting spells on their command.

Profile

Appearance

The White Cloak's design resembles Noelle's Dark World appearance, including a long white cloak and hood. Unlike Noelle, the hood remains raised at all times, obscuring the White Cloak's face with a blue shadow.

Personality

As with the other minigame characters, the White Cloak has no semblance of personality. After being found by HERO_SWORD, she becomes a compliant follower, echoing Noelle's subservience when controlled during the Weird Route. She remains motionless until the player exits the room in which she first appears.

Main story

During the second board of the Sword Route, HERO_SWORD explores the Ice Palace. Early in the area, the game warns the player about a forbidden path accessed via ice magic and instructs them to follow the White Cloak.

After maxing out HERO_SWORD's Level in the Ice Palace, they are able to destroy a set of trees to access the White Cloak's room. She has a reaction to being struck, being pushed in the direction of the strike and briefly changing colors to black and green, but cannot be killed. Upon leaving the room she is encountered in, she subsequently trails HERO_SWORD throughout the remainder of the area. The White Cloak casts an ice projectile when the attack button is pressed while she is in the party. When a projectile hits an enemy, it freezes, allowing the enemy to be treated as a movable block, which can then be used to solve puzzles. The ice projectile passes through enemies, making it possible to freeze multiple at once. Certain other enemies and enemy projectiles are destroyed by the ice projectile instead of freezing. Eventually, the party backtracks into a room with a Blue Bird blocking the path. The White Cloak's ice magic can be used to freeze the bird in order to proceed.

The following room consists of an empty space with four exits, which is a puzzle in which HERO_SWORD must follow the correct path using the White Cloak. The White Cloak will stand still on the paths the player is not supposed to go, and only follows HERO_SWORD if they go through the correct exits. Following the path leads to a locked door with the Delta Rune symbol, though this one has an additional triangle. Opening the door causes the Ice Key and the White Cloak to be "USED UP", causing the latter to vanish.

Outside of Deltarune

The White Cloak's role in guiding HERO_SWORD through the maze, the door she leads them to, and her status as a parallel to Noelle are alluded to in a post on Noelle's blog, in which this is claimed to be from Dragon Blazers. In this blog post, Noelle acts as her own guide in White Cloak's place, but was unable to find the key to the door, halting her progress.

Trivia

  • The White Cloak, as well as the entirety of the Ice Palace, serve as an in-game hint toward the Weird Route and as a tutorial for initiating it in Chapter 2.
    • The Blue Bird enemy that must be frozen in order to progress is an allusion to the fight with Berdly on Chapter 2's Weird Route, which ends with him being entombed in an ice prism after being targeted with the SnowGrave spell. This locks the player into the route for the rest of the Chapter.
    • The White Cloak is internally known as obj_board_enemy_deer and has several deer sprites, making for an even clearer allusion to Noelle.
  • When the White Cloak uses her ice magic, her sprite momentarily flickers as if she took damage. This is likely a reference to the ThornRing's damaging properties.
  • Due to the White Cloak being spawned using the enemy spawner object, she is able to damage and kill HERO_SWORD on the first frame she spawns.[3]
