Chart Editor

From Deltarune Wiki

The Chart Editor is an unused mode in Deltarune. It is a editor for Rock Video charts that can store, edit and load charts. It is available in Chapters 3, 4, & 5, though with different track selections in each Chapter.

Gameplay

The Chart Editor is able to edit tracks from the selection of tracks the Chapter has, as well as support guitar, drums and vocal charts (called tambourine in Chapter 5 for any charts that don't have lyrics), the latter two being unplayable by the player normally, though the editor does not support a third button for vocals. Charts can not be made for specifically Normal or Hard difficulty, despite both Chapters having separate difficulties available.

On the right side of the screen, is a bar with HERO_SWORD as the icon, which shows what part of the track the player is on. In the bottom right corner, is the score which works the same as Rock Video's score system.

The P key pauses the track, though this does not work if debug mode is not on. When the track is paused, left click places down notes, and right click deletes them, when a note is placed down, pressing SHIFT and left click extends the note. Pressing CTRL on a existing note makes it so when the note is played, it changes the character's animation. Pressing T refreshes the notes after the track loops. + and - zoom in and zoom out the screen respectively. W/E disables/enables the guitar stem. B toggles playback start, V sets the playback start, and N returns the player to the playback start. Q enables/disables autoplay. U saves the track to a file. The I key loads a saved track, with four options, Manual save by pressing 1, Auto save by pressing 2, Load exported chart by pressing 3, and Exit menu by pressing 4. The TAB key hides tooltips and the G key makes the tooltips bigger/smaller.

Track selection

The track selection that the editor has is different between Chapters. Some tracks in the selections aren't playable in the base game. The code for the selections have more songs not used in the base game or any of the selections.

Creation and development

The Chart Editor was developed by Taxiderby so that they didn't have to manually time notes when making charts.[1]

Trivia

  • Opening up the Chart Editor in Chapter 3 will lead to a Dogcheck, however this does not happen on Chapter 4 or Chapter 5.
  • In A DARK ZONE's chart, the UI is shifted upwards and the dancing pumpkins from Jackenstein's fight are added to the bottom of the screen.
    • Strangely, the object that spawns the dancing pumpkins is stored into a variable named _pink_event, this may mean that Cutie Mew Mew Magic was intended to be added as a chart (possibly using the reserved chart), but was scrapped, and its code was reused for A DARK ZONE.

I even built an entire chart editor from scratch, because manually timing each note sucks so so bad #deltarune@taxiderby.coven.cafe on Bluesky, June 20, 2025.
