School
The school (JP: がっこう) is a five-room building found southeast in Hometown, and east of the library. Kris goes here as one of Alphys's students, and Toriel teaches the younger students. Toriel brings Kris here for school days after they exit the Dreemurr residence.
It houses the closet Dark World, and the Grand Fountain in Castle Town. In Chapter 1, it also houses the Eastern Fountain and Card Kingdom.
In Chapter 1, Kris and Toriel arrive late to school. After Toriel gives Kris a parting hug in the entrance hall, they both depart to their respective classes. Due to their tardiness and missing chalk, Kris and Susie are partners for their unexplained group project.
Kris can briefly explore, walk,[1] or outpace[2] Susie in entrance hall, all of which she comments on. The two go to the supply closet to retrieve chalk, and inexplicably get locked in the supply closet. Shortly after, they descend into the Dark World.
After sealing the Eastern Fountain, Susie questions Kris if their time in Card Kingdom was real, and exits it on her own. In the hallway, Susie comments that time has passed. In front of the supply closet, Susie expresses interest in returning to the Dark World. Kris can then inspect any of the rooms, or call Toriel with their Cell Phone while they are in school. If Kris has not called Toriel, she calls them when they are close to the school's front door.
In Chapter 2, Kris arrives late to school again. Susie kicks the back of their chair and acknowledges this, and Kris falls asleep during Berdly's monologue. Kris wakes up when class ends. Alphys notices this, and wishes them good luck and to sleep well. If Kris interacts with Alphys, she questions if they lost sleep after becoming Susie's partner.
If Kris did not interact with Alphys at the alley in Chapter 1, Alphys explains how worried she was after they "disappeared yesterday". After class, Alphys asks where Kris and Susie were, worrying that Susie may have caused Kris trouble.[3]

At the entrance hall, Susie shakes Kris and continues to question their prior adventure. She brings them over to the hallway. As they stare at the closed supply closet, Noelle calls out to Susie and approaches. She invites Kris and Susie to research with her and Berdly in the library. If Kris previously spoke with Noelle about Susie at the locked gate, Noelle also offers Susie a lunchbox of chalk.
Kris temporarily returns to school to collect Card Kingdom's Darkners in the unused classroom. They can immediately return to the supply closet, or go to entrance hall and overhear Alphys and Toriel's conversation.
Kris and Susie exit the supply closet to go to the library.
After their adventure in the Cyber World, Kris and Susie return to school to transfer its Darkners to Castle Town.
In Chapter 4, Kris and Susie can return to the supply closet. If Tenna was not given to "nobody" in the Blook house, Susie asks Kris to wait. After a short period, Susie returns with Tenna's Light World form before they enter.

Alphys's classroom is the southwest room from the entrance hall. On the wall is a clock, a large chalk board, and various motivational quotes, including from the video game, Astral Wolf.[4] Alphys's large desk has a computer, paperwork, and pink roses.
At the center are nine desks for the students. From the top, and left to right, these are the student desks: Noelle, Berdly, Temmie, Catti, Kris, Monster Kid, Jockington, Susie, and Snowy.
Inspecting the clock before or after class has slightly different narration. In Chapter 1, Alphys's computer wallpaper rotates between nature images, and can also feature muscular superheroes.[5] In Chapter 2, the wallpaper is altered so the muscular superheroes are keeping distance at the school dance.[6]
In Chapter 1, Kris can interact with everyone twice at the start of class. They can learn of which classmates are paired for the unexplained group project: Noelle and Berdly, Temmie and EG, Catti and Jockington, Monster Kid and Snowy.
After Susie exits, Kris can interact with the other students twice for their opinions on the situation.
In Chapter 2, Temmie can be found at her desk. If Kris interacts with her and has found an Egg, she puts one on her desk. When Kris inspects the egg, it lists the amount of Eggs that have been found.
In Chapter 4, Temmie can be found at her desk. She explains she is learning how to sing, which prompts her to sing the first four lines of Don't Forget per interaction. On Berdly's desk is an egg, and the various Eggs that Kris has found in prior Chapters via multiple Completion FILEs. Alphys's computer is also off.

Toriel's classroom is the southeast room from the entrance hall. On her wall is the entire alphabet, a clock, a white board with "Ms. Toriel" written in red marker, scented markers, a poster featuring various basic shapes, including a "Hyperdodecahedron". The closet has children's books, including some of Kris's old books, and a drawing of Toriel on its door.
Toriel's large desk has a computer, and a fruit. There are six student tables in the center, and the southern end of the room has chairs stacked on the right side, and a large purple rug on the left.
In Chapter 1, it is only accessible after Kris seals the Eastern Fountain. Kris can inspect the scented markers. Interacting with it can cause them to smell the marshmallow-scented marker, or decline. The narration describes the chocolate one smelling "too fake anyway". Toriel's wallpaper is of Kris and Asriel dressed up for Halloween eight years ago, and the fruit visually resembles an apple, though the narration describes it as "teacher food". The block building on the rug can be inspected, and the narration for the stacked chairs describe it as the "Throne of the Gods".
In Chapter 2, it is accessible before and after Kris and Susie's Cyber World adventure. If Kris inspects the scented markers, they choose the green one unprompted. On Toriel's desk, her computer's wallpaper changes to feature Kris and Asriel playing video games, with Asriel using the knockoff controller. The fruit on Toriel's desk is an orange.[7] There are additional stacked chairs, which the narration also acknowledges.[8]
In Chapter 4, the orange is replaced with a pear. Inspecting the markers causes Kris to smell the cherry-scented one. Toriel's wallpaper differs again, as it instead features Kris and Asriel in winter, where they made snowmen with branched antlers.[9] If Kris inspects the stack of chairs, Susie becomes jealous that Alphys's classroom does not have one.
The entrance hall is the center of the school. It leads to the other classrooms and the school's front door.
On the left is Alphys's classroom, multiple lockers, including one decorated with Jockington memorabilia. The notice board mentions "Sadie Hawkman's dance".
On the right is a water fountain, which can be inspected up to three times for slightly altered descriptions, a notice board with a paper for the Cross Country Team,[10] four more lockers (including Asriel's old locker and Kris's current locker), and Toriel's classroom.
At the start of Chapter 1, Kris can explore the entrance hall. Susie can taunt Kris for trying to go to the right of the entrance hall, and if they drink water from the fountain. For the latter, she claims other people put their mouth on it. Susie immediately insults them if they try to drink from it a second time.[11] If Kris tries to exit school, Susie jokes, but admits she would not inform Alphys. If Kris attempts this a second time, Susie reasons that Toriel will have a "heart attack" if Kris skips school.[12] Susie also has different comments depending if Kris walks[1] or runs and outpaces her.[2]

At the start of Chapter 2, Kris can go to entrance hall while balancing a "trash orb". They can overhear Alphys and Toriel's conversation about them. Kris can call Toriel with their Cell Phone before or after this conversation.
If Kris did not overhear, they inform Toriel that they made a "trash orb". If Kris did overhear, they state they are "normal", and is implied to offer their phone to Alphys. If Kris calls immediately after overhearing, Toriel's horns are visible above the dialogue box.
The hallway is the second half of the school; it connects to the latter three rooms. From left to right, the rooms are the locked room, the supply closet, and the unused classroom.

In Chapter 1, the supply closet is inexplicably dark when opened. On console versions, the Hometown border fades out when Kris enters it. Inside, it is pitch black and narrow, with only pieces of old paper littering the floor. When the closet closes, the papers, Kris, and Susie descend into ??????.
At the end of Chapter 1, the supply closet is locked.
In Chapter 2, the supply closet is open, though it instead sends Kris and Susie to Castle Town. It is temporarily inaccessible when Ralsei forbids Kris and Susie to return until they do their homework.
In Chapter 4, the supply closet is accessible. Kris and Susie descend into Castle Town.

The unused classroom is the upper northeast room. The west side's ceiling walls appear decayed. It has a locked door on its west wall, presumably connecting to the supply closet; a large green chalk board; a clock; a light switch; and a darkened rectangle space with an apparent pin at the top, presumably for a small notice board.
The floor is littered with block pieces, playing cards, puzzle pieces, chess pieces, a square-patterned rug, and a checkerboard. The arrangement of these, starting from the left, roughly corresponds with the Field, Great Board, Forest, and Card Castle. In the back of the classroom sits a stuffed animal that closely resembles Seam in appearance, and on the closet there is a drawing of Gerson, made by his son Alvin.[13][14]
In Chapter 1, Kris and Susie find themselves here at the end of their adventure.
In Chapter 2, Kris collects the Darkners in this room, and relocates the rug into the closet.
This room is on the far left of the school. It cannot be opened in Chapters 1, 2, 3, or 4.
In the UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary stream, Toby Fox has various comments regarding Chapter 1.
Rainy makes an early cameo appearance in the modified Chapter 1. Rainy appears behind the gate on the right side of the school.[15]

Toby Fox explains that the cutscene of Susie menacing Kris is inspired by a real bully in Toby's life, who was familiar with his mother.[16] The closet closing sequence was Toby's attempt at channeling the game Secret of Evermore and "90s and 80s movies". Susie's and Kris's descent was inspired by the game Brandish.[17]
When Kris and Susie return to school, Toby states that the drawing in the unused classroom is Alvin's drawing of his father, Gerson.[14] Toby also confirms that Toriel calls Kris if they do not call her first, and that she will not call if they use their Cell Phone to call her.[18]
- Full-view exterior of the school
- Map of the school at the end of Chapter 1
- Unlike the other rooms in the school, the unused classroom is at an isometric view instead of a 3/4ths view. This is likely intended to show the door leading into the supply closet.
- The phrase "Throne of the Gods", is later used in a narration for Chapter 2, in Queen's Mansion.
- The school's entrance door features the Delta Rune.
- Additionally, a similar variant of the school, Toriel's attire, and Monster Kid attending was shown at the end of Undertale's True Pacifist ending credits.
- "Hyperdodecahedron" for the shapes poster is a similar description as Undertale's Snowdin narration for a snow ball.[19]
- After Kris and Susie seal the Eastern Fountain, one of the sounds that plays is a bark sound, similar to the bark sound in Undertale's Lesser Dog battle. This sound can later be heard again in Chapter 2, when Kris, Susie, and Ralsei acquire bumper cars in Cyber Field, and when Kris interacts with the Annoying Dog-faced cones in Cyber City.
- The orange dialogue during Chapter 2[7] is an allusion to an excerpt from the UNDERTALE Alarm Clock, where Undertale's Catty consumes too many oranges and became sick.[20]
