Watering can

The watering can (JP: ジョウロ) is a gameplay mechanic introduced in Chapter 5 of Deltarune. It is primarily used in the Garden; the first one is found past the Delta Rune gate in the Flowery Helped area opened by Flowery.

Overview

The watering can lets Kris water anything nearby in a 2×2 range, which is indicated by light blue reticles. Kris can water from the left or right side by pressing the CONFIRM button. Holding the CONFIRM button while moving causes Kris to water in the same direction they are facing, and they can also walk backwards while watering (making Kris moonwalk). Kris cannot run while watering, though it is possible to water and run by enabling Auto-Run, which is seemingly a bug.

The water can revive cut flowers or create blocks of grass that can be walked on, making it possible to collect chests, solve puzzles, and access hidden areas. It can also make flowers grow on top of some NPCs and overworld objects, or make plants grow in certain areas.

Some areas have bars straddling across tree stumps. If Kris walks underneath these bars, the watering can gets knocked away onto a nearby pedestal, indicating that the watering can cannot be brought over. If this is done in the correct place, a Netskie will rush over and eat the watering can.

Variants

  • A golden watering can appears only in the Sheary topiaries room. It has a 4×4 range and is solely used to water flowers that form a mosaic of Flowery's face. Doing so reveals extra dialogue between Flowery and Susie, and chests containing a Thatchet and 50 Flowery Dollars.
  • A larger version of the watering can, with a leafy pattern visible on its side, can be found in the foyer of Flower Castle, inside a door that is blocked by topiaries of Asgore and Flowery. The party must traverse the castle's west and east wings to cut the topiaries and obtain the big watering can, which is used to water the beanstalk that leads to Top of Castle. All three members of the party work together to lift the big watering can, standing side by side. After picking up the watering can, trap doors open in the floor that prevent the party from leaving the room. After watering the beanstalk fully, the big watering can explodes.
  • A watering can with the face of the Annoying Dog appears in a secret room right before the chapter's Egg room. It can be obtained after solving a puzzle with six flowers and the Annoying Dog, and is used to water the path that leads to the Egg room, although the Annoying Dog will try to take it away from Kris every time it is removed from its pedestal. When used, the dog watering can makes dog noises.
  • A watering can appears atop the SOUL as a result of using Terakota's "WateringCan" or "SlowerCan" ACTs, automatically producing droplets that are used to fill pots below the bullet board. Both ACTs are essentially identical, but for "SlowerCan" producing droplets more slowly than the other ACT. Once all of the pots are filled, Terakota will be automatically spared.
