Leitmotifs

From Deltarune Wiki
(Redirected from Leitmotif)

A leitmotif (/ˌlaɪtmoʊˈtiːf/) is a recurring musical idea that is associated with a person, idea, event, or place. Leitmotifs occur throughout the Deltarune OST, in unlisted and unused tracks both in-game and on the official Deltarune website, and in promotional material, and they contribute to the tracks being both catchy and memorable while tying associations and musical pieces together. In particular, many important characters have their own leitmotifs that often play when encountering them in some way.

This page also includes musical motifs, which for purposes of this page, are defined as thematically relevant musical ideas not necessarily associated with a single concept and appearing in multiple tracks. Such motifs are titled with a prominent piece containing them. Timestamps found below are approximate to one second and follow the timing used in the Bandcamp version of the soundtrack. Associations or musical pieces with multiple motifs and leitmotifs are split into "parts", each part having one motif or leitmotif.

This motif is the main theme of Deltarune. Its melody is featured prominently in the end credits tracks for the first three Chapters. The second half of the motif (from 0:04 in the audio above) is often separated from the first half and makes brief appearances in many tracks.

Don't Forget is the most frequently used melody in the game so far, appearing in the following tracks:

For example, Chill Jailbreak Alarm To Study And Relax To from Chapter 2 directly quotes Pathetic House from Undertale, which uses the Ghost Fight leitmotif, while Beginning references the Once Upon a Time leitmotif but does not quote any specific track.
